I understand what you mean. It is indeed cruelty that is practised in most Asian countries.

But you have to see from another perspective! Try to think in the shoes of those people. You just try to take your western point of view and just put it in another continent, a different culture and people. What do you do to rats? Do you take care of them on a daily basis?
Because that's what dogs are in lots of countries. In Taiwan for example, dogs are a real plague to the country. They're numerous, breed like rabbits and nothing or no one control them! So animal cruelty yes, but they HAVE TO get rid of them. The festival of dogs for example, it's a horrible day during which Chinese all go around and torture dogs before killing them. Well the torture part isn't... Necessary that's true but these days are an incredible way of controlling dog population.

Humans have been hunting whales for tens of thousands of years. I don't see anything wrong with it, as long as the numbers are kept at sustainable levels. There are a lot of other ways to increase the tenderness of the meat. These people must be educated about it, and torture before the slaughter must be strictly prohibited. But this should not be used as an excuse to ban meat.

Not as a matter of animal "sports" or gambling such as horse fighting, dog fighting, cockfighting, and others. In China, almost every kind of animal is killed for human purposes, either for plain human consumption or according to pseudo-medical beliefs of having an element to cure whatever diseases or illness or as aphrodisiac, and others. Live dogs are tied in the market for sale as food. Even pangolins, turtles, birds, and other weird and endangered animal species are all for human consumption as food.

Considering how big the Chinese population, they will eat anything they see fit like dogs and other animals. Also, their culture of eating dogs is not new as well. They even have a dog festival, which is the practice of dog eating. But the problem lies here is that they are eating dogs the whole year round, not just during this festival. Let's expand that to the current state of corporate farming. If you saw the condition of the animals (specifically chickens and pigs, cows aren't much better) you wouldn't eat that shit. You to this problem come from the point of view of law. Yes indeed, everyone is free in their country to do anything and from the point of view of law it is not possible to require them not to kill the dogs, but if effective and economic methods of coercion that it can have meaning. You're right. Fot example, in china's yulin dog meat fest. From our perspective in the modern era, we abhorr the slaughter and consumption of dog meat. But for the people of yulin, this has long been a tradition. We can't force them to just suddenly cease what their doing for a long time. To clone the mammoth, first they need to extract a well preserved corpse in which the DNA is not damaged. Such a corpse hasn't been found yet. After 10,000 years lying in the permafrost, I don't think that the DNA will remain undamaged in any condition.

In the Philippines, there exist a law too, preventing cruelty to animals, but it can be violated if one kills a stray dog which attacked a human first (just depending your life). In the Philippines, it is not a festive occasion to eat dog meats, but the effect of the dog meat is good in cold seasons, it makes the body active therefore producing more heat to fight the cold. Stray dogs in the Philippines are being shot, for healthy reasons, some stray dogs are very aggressive and a pack of dogs can kill a walking man, stray dogs also carries rabies which can kill a person in one bite. It is not cruelty to animals for which stray dogs are considered pest along with stray cats & dirty rats. There are laws too that mandate all pet lovers to go to veterinaries so that their pets which is possible to have rabies be injected by anti-rabies.

One family needs to have a pet of their own (mostly a cat or a dog) to drive away visiting animals. There are plenty group animals that are not afraid of human presence, examples are kangaroos in the golf courses in Australia, Kangaroos in the streets (elk  and deers), and some other predatory land animals. Australia is a place where mostly seasides have plenty of different sharks. Home of famous venomous spider, home of many stonefish and blue ringed octopus, and many more. Really all depends on how you define danger. Also — every country has different regions. There are stories from 4 of the previously mentioned top 10 most dangerous (Afghanistan, Pakistan, Lebanon, Palestine) but without giving the sense that lives were ever in danger.
