Pretty good video.  It turns out all the artwork for video game covers in the 80's and 90's was...done by one guy:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dw-SPY4n0s8

And of course he's now broke.  He's also never even played a video game in his life but somehow created all the artwork for every game that exists.

Interesting. He basically created half my childhood.

@infofront

create the poll with two extra prices 1 under 2000 and 1 above 6500

then you exclude the overbearish as the overly bullish Roll Eyes Wink

That's not a bad idea. It's a little too late to do that now because I can't add an option to the top without screwing everything up. I'll try that next poll.

Gorgeous woman but extremely high maintenance I imagine.  What's with the tattoo of herself on her left shoulder though?  That's odd.

Sideways, sideways....

Well... After the btcmillionaire more than successful subject about creating a self sustainable pond in his property... I would like to ask.... Anyone here has fully self-sustainable solar powered property? I have studied a lot about it, but some real life experience from another fellow WO'er would be great.

I think it is already at the point where it is cost efficient (more so considering where I live... SUN all the time!) and I am perfectly capable of doing everything myself and know my shit about buying stuff for way less that its usual price (either second hand or surplus) which will also help reduce the total cost substantially.

The property already has its own waterwell with enough capacity to fill the 125000 litres pool over a couple days. So it is only the power grid what I would like to cut off for a completely self sustainable property. My dream!

Will WO also deliver this time? lol
WO please, I understand that we're not on a 90 degree up course to the moon, but this thread has a reputation to uphold. Somebody respond to the man.

What I would say is focus on siting and reducing system complexity.

Slickest setup I ever saw was at MCAGCC.  They built the array on a South facing slope.  The panels were mounted to long pipes that ran down the hill due South.  The pipes would rotate to clock the panels, many of these in parallel linked with drive chain.

Simplest pointing mechanism I ever saw.

C'on we are talking about low DC power here.... just don't touch the inverter output (or any other 220V AC live wiring) when it is active but thats some common sense.

P.S.: Of course don't short circuit the panel wiring.... no electroshock but nice sparks and wire melting assured.

not true

Modern MPPT controllers take the PV string in series and then actively impedance match to extract maximum power in varying conditions.

Even a modest series string can easily develop enough DC voltage to be dangerous.  DC becomes dangerous around 40V.

Your statement would be true in the old days where everyone just paralleled up their 12V nominal panels, worst that's going to happen with that is a welding burn, but the tech has moved on.

You're right, of course. We're just talking degrees. I suppose Bitcoin is a kind of Rorschach - people see in it reflections of their own concerns and emphases.

Guess the non-English language made the entire post, including quote, just fly under my radar. I retract my former post. WO delivers.

Edit: Nevermind, I'm just blind.

I was gonna say, I posted a response (in English) here. I saw no response, nor no merits. Sniff.  EDIT: thx jjg

I am certainly not an expert, but are you building new, or retrofitting an existing AC wired home/building? With solar I think you have two main choices to wind up with usable electricity: Use an inverter to convert it to AC to run your existing appliances (expensive), or build new, with larger wiring in the walls for DC (to avoid voltage drop), then find all DC appliances (expensive). Many do that with camping and RV appliances.

That is on top of the power generation itself. Then if you want to watch TV at night (or whatever) you need batteries/storage (expensive).

I don't know what your weather is, but you can get better BTUs per dollar of heating perhaps with a passive heat storage, and pump heated water around. Perhaps gravel beds under the house, and/or water for thermal storage. If you need air conditioning, you need a serious inverter (expensive) or RV AC unit. I haven't looked, there are surely green-type DC appliances now that are better than using camping/RV appliances. It would look funny for your luxurious BTC millionaire home to have tiny RV fridges around...

If you are building new, it's much easier to implement some of this stuff, compared to retrofitting.  I am not an expert.

A 125000 liter pool doesn't sound very large (is this a swimming pool?), where I am from ponds are small (measured in tens of thousands of gallons), and lakes are measured in acres. Depending on your weather, perhaps some sort of geothermal involvement could help, and that takes a lot of power for all the pumping.
The pond jazz was my earlier question, namely whether or not a self-sustained pond with e.g. salmons and shrimp would be possible on private property. Here we're likely talking about an actual pool though. Different question.

Anyway, nice post. Hopefully someone will send more merit your way.

Possibly a Type I error.

I suppose I should look at the analysis before commenting but..you know me. Looking at the gold chart it appears to still be climbing upwards from the the Nixon shock of 1971. Another problem is scale, it's comparing a range that is 3x the entire life span of Bitcoin and trying to correlate it into twelve month's. Here is some light reading for you guys if you care to delve any deeper....quiz's in the AM. /s

Thanks for the post Bitcoinaire..it is interesting.

I think it is a new asset in that as it is being established as a SoV at the same time as it's capabilities of a MoE are being bootstrapped.  I think most money has had to really become the first one before it could be the second, and I think Bitcoin is going to overlap more than that.

I see it slightly differently: that it's true calling, as it were, is as a personal, portable, permanent SoV. A kind of undying meta-wallet that we can trivially take across borders and generations. We can choose to grow our stash all our lives, give it to the state in taxes, pass it on, spend it, whatever - it is completely within our - the keyholder's - control. Not the border guards. Unbeholden to or trusting any third party, bank or societal construct. It becomes purely that part of us needed to exchange, from time to time, strategic value with others. In that sense, no other currency is needed.

But the means of exchange on an everyday basis, the buying a coffee, is a red herring. It has some importance, yes, but only to demonstrate atht the transfer of value can indeed be performed, trivially, securely and irreversibly. It's a kind of proof of concept to the doubters.

Undeniably, for banal shopping a credit card works better. Sometimes you don't trust the person you're buying from. In that case you're buying a judge for that credit card 3% who will usually side with you. I don't have a problem with that. In fact it seems perverse that fighting that service is the ditch Roger and Craig are happy to die in. Let 'em.

Very possible scenario...  Yet when the SoV aspect is mature I do not see why a robust MoE scenario would not be on tap.  My above post I am saying I think the two will overlap, but even if they don't once people are really using it for saving I cannot imagine they would not begin to get interested in spending as well... and there is NO reason credit cards cannot still be the tools we use to do it.

I agree Roger is a certain kind of ideologue who wants a world where there are no banks or middle men.  I get that.  And I know there are many people on this thread who want that as well... Hell, I like the idea too!  But the thing is, there will always be banks, and credit cards, and middle men, because they will always offer things most common people are not going to want to take responsibility for.  Custody, liquidity, credit...

You're right, of course. We're just talking degrees. I suppose Bitcoin is a kind of Rorschach - people see in it reflections of their own concerns and emphases.

Yes I know I would need batteries and in fact that would be the most expensive part of the project for the amounts of energy I would need to storage. But if the solar panels are able to deliver the 5KW I would need during sun hours then I would move to the second phase before cutting from the grid. If it doesn't then maybe I will anyways install some panels to reduce the electricity bill but my idea of a completely self sustained property would not be viable.

I suppose there are many differences between a small boat/RV installation and a home one. Main one being the space limitation to install enough panels and maintaining the proper orientation and angle against the sun.

It's really all pretty much the same. The main difference is the type of voltages required. Higher voltages mean you can run your wires farther on a narrower gauge wire with less resistance. Typical electrical instillation's want to stay below 80% of your total capacity. ie, if you want 5kW of continuous load then plan on having a 6kW or higher system. Like I mentioned before having a good inverter is key. You don't want a bunch of noise in your circuit playing havoc with valuable electronics.

If I can get near 80% max output from the panels then I guess this would be viable and cost effective. Panel price has dropped a lot in the past few years. Just an example:

https://autosolar.es/paneles-de-conexion-a-red/panel-solar-270w-talesun-policristalino

And they can bought even cheaper.

So, at less than 0.5$/Watt I would say the ROI would be reasonably good.

Good advice that of the inverter. The panels I understand don't matter that much and mostly just care about the cost per Watt, but will be very careful on choosing a good inverter thanks!
0.5$/Watt at peak performance. Gotta remember to average it over 24 hours. Then include the loss from battery storage, seasonal changes and cloudy days.

Still a fun project, and potentially important in case of large scale failure. I like the idea of self sufficiency. Be warned that the state does not.

21% voters voted for bitcoin going up $5000 - You guys will take profit here?  Huh

13% voters voted for bitcoin going down under $3000- how much fiat you guys still have  Grin. i am all out here Sad waiting for a paycheck.

And besides, I need a shiggle and and grin in my old age....
you find a pool?

*grumbles*

Is there a thread somewhere we can coordinate stuff and things for Grin mining ?

Was thinking of throwing a 1080ti at it later tonight for shits and giggles.

Yea, I am throwing a 1070 ti at F2Pool. What the hell. I mined Monero very early on under 50 cents. You never know.

Mining with a single 1070 on MWgrinpool right now. Getting around 2.5gps. I'll let it mine for a couple of months it seems. If it goes sub $1 levels, I'll throw $100 and wait. If it goes sub $0.1 (it can go even lower tbh), will throw another $100 and that's it. No more investments after.

Morning WO's.

Mining Grin with my 2 test rigs. (4x1080ti, 4xVega64).
1080ti: 4.25gps per card
Vega64: 2.95 gps per card
Combined I get 5-6 grin per day ATM.
Tried sparkpool buts seems dodgy to me after today - wanting to link an exchange for payouts.
Switched back to grinmint.com

Mining @ https://www.mwgrinpool.com - It feels so strange to me that you send payments to an IP:Port ? Does not seem very good for OpSec. 3.89 gps with my 1080ti ? *shrugs*

Still trying to figure out this Keybase user stuff. Installed the app, but it has some Stellar wallet in it ?!

EDIT: Moved to f2pool

Yea, I just set up one card in a pc for tonight. I am going to spend time tomorrow looking into running a node and wallet. Try to catch up on the tech. I shut down most of my mine for the summer here in the southern hemisphere. We are moving so most of my gear is in boxes at the moment. Going to watch a movie. See you all later. Oh I am only getting 2.5-2.6 gps on my 1070ti
