looks like a massive manipulation attempt.

first: 1500 dump on bitstamp, at the same time bitcointalk went down
it didn't crash the price

next: hack of bitfinex, 2000 dump on stamp

someone desperatily wants the price to plummet down to slaughter sheeps in the resulting panic

Lol.  Or someone knows something you don't.  Hubris is a bitch.

I see a couple of large transactions on Bitfinex (79 BTC and 101 BTC) at low prices around the $680 mark - then virtually no trades after those - the price is back up now. What makes people say Bitfinex is hacked, though?

I agree. Hope you have fiat at the exchange. No sense in letting the bad guys get all the coins.

Wow...did anyone bother to read my post?

Am I missing something or is it fine for an exchange to allow its users to place orders without funds to back them?

Gox has always allowed this but the unfunded orders should not appear on the public orderbook until they become funded, usually by a recent trade happening. This was a cause of the market lagging back in April because their software was checking whether orders were funded before executing. They optimized this.

Bitstamp recently introduced a nice variation, where a new order to sell is automatically created at a preset price after a purchase is executed (and vice-versa).

The exchange shit is getting scary in general. I'm going to be looking for an opportunity where I am comfortable putting a certain amount of coins into cold storage and then take the rest of my fiat out and take all of my trading urges out in the stock market.

It would seem that the "panic sheep" haven't been selling.  Here's how I remember today:

- BitcoinTalk went down (DDoS?)
- Huge dump on BitStamp (1000+ BTC)
- Huge volume on Gox dropping the Gox premium dramatically.  Little correlation seen at the other exchanges.
- Apple pulls Blockchain.info app from AppStore
- Bitfinex goes buggy (hack?)
- Another huge dump of BitStamp (2000 BTC)

I'm surprised how well we're holding up.

Throwing the Apple stuff out for a moment and setting the Gox stuff aside, the other things look like a coordinated attack. I mean, the 2nd dump on Bitstamp could have been someone scared shitless on Bitfinex, but the first dump that happened with the DDOS and then, if it turns out Bitfinex was toyed with, then, yes, this would seem like a coordinated attack.

Interesting that people are screaming market manipulation, but these same people don't mention the fact that over and over and over again BTCtalk gets ddosed at the same time dumps happen.

Manipulation or not, both the Gox issue and the potential Bitfinex issue have the potential to severely depress the price. It's a matter of when.

Heh, manipulators... Angry

Where is Loaded? Usually he comes around in times like this and gives his opinion...

My bid is at 750$  Grin
It's only a 10% drop so far. Hardly worth Loaded's time. Loaded acted after a 70% drop.
