Funny how everyone attacked Mt. Gox for taking a stab at Bitcoin. Now because of the DDOS, one exchange after the other is halting withdrawals.

+1

MtGox was/is and will be king, get used to it.

Wow, I have been following this thread for a while now, I think I am going to stop. Seriously, for every one legitimate remark, there are hundreds others that do nothing but obfuscate reality and regurgitate media frenzy.

This thread now resembles the cesspools that are the Baby-Pips or ForexFactory forums in the way disinformation is spread based of half-truths and delivered with so much emotional baggage, you'd think the authors are packing for a trip to Mars (or the Moon right?).

Anyways, I digress - enjoy the feces flinging, if you are into that kind of thing.

Employ liberal use of the ignore button and watch the forum turn to italics during bad news. It's an easy way to call the bottoms.

good one : - )

It has been much higher during extreme price movements in the past (I believe I've seen over 9000).

It is probably currently higher than normal.

The BTC price on MtGOX now (580 USD) is already less than half of its all-time high on Nov/28 (1242 USD).

On other exchanges it is still somewhat above 50%.

Can someone explain why people set huge walls to keep the price from going up? If you have that many bitcoins then surely you want the price as high as possible?

People usually place sell offers because they just want to sell.  Smiley

The higher you set the offer to sell, the longer you will have to wait before you can use your money or play another turn at the game.

I look occasionally and under 2000 in active times is pretty normal but it does fluctuate a lot at busy times.

There is a lot of dust clogging things up a bit and with exchange DDOS going on and attempts by all and sundry to double spend, 2700, or even 4000 is not excessive.  If you watch on the blockchain, you will see transactions being dealt with, a rise or fall (general fluctuation) is to be expected.

Bitcoin is a honey badger, the protocol is fine.

It is interesting to consider what measures could remove the ability to conduct a systematic attack on the value of bitcoin.  The elimination of centralized exchanges seems the most obvious.  That, however, will take time.

Another would be to identify the persons who conducted the DDOS, and who coordinated the attack on the exchanges.  If an exchange operator were interested in preserving the value of bitcoin, they would open their records to public inspection.  Transparency is, after all, part of the essence of bitcoin.  This would make it possible to identify the actors.

A defector who considers the purposes of bitcoin and the hope it offers mankind to be more important than personal greed might disclose the communication channels used to coordinate operations.

The bitcoin protocol is working fine gentleman. Just some bug in wallet software which causes this: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Transaction_Malleability. There is already a technical implementation for this and it is implemented now. That's why BTC-E and Bitstamp are updating their wallets.

edit: Gox did fuck up more than other exchanges because their coding was old, therefore the chances of transaction malleability happening at gox was higher.
