Bitbolo's got it: This is pre-publication, pre-review studies and should be treated as such. It's not 100% bullshit out of the box (they did take the time to write it and at least document some of their methods/observations) but it's amazingly easy to make mistakes in a study and find erroneous conclusions. Small sample size, sample weighting, and a bunch of other variables can tank a study.

A great example of this was cold fusion. A lesser example was sonoluminescence which while real is not quite a "star in a jar"....

Best thing to do is see how these studies fare in peer review. In the meantime hell, if the person is dying I say give it a try, why the fuck not? Then again I'm a person who contemplates having my head chopped off and mounted on a popsicle stick because I'm dead and hell why the fuck not?

But don't start popping these pills as a proactive measure, could be a waste of time, could do harm, and could pull the pills from people who actually need them to live/whatever.

These stupid people at CNN right now seem so confident that US is going to see 0.1 million deaths. It's like... if US (hopefully not) gets to see 0.1 million deaths, Trump will come out and tweet, "told you so!".

Bullseye article on ZH. Nailed it.

Best quote:

Quote
"Don’t look now but you’ve been screwed again. The Wall Street bankers are again able to borrow at 0%, while charging you 17% on your ever-increasing credit card balance. Why aren’t these scumbag bankers announcing a three-month moratorium on credit card and mortgage payments, with no interest accruing? Because their goal is to further enslave you in debt, while enriching themselves. They will run patriotic commercials, while sticking a red white and blue dildo up your ass."

My nephew has recently been expressing interest in knowing more about how the financial markets really work. It's nice to see him thinking for himself and expressing scepticism about the system. But I don't have much time at the moment to sit down with him and explain the corrupt relationship between the Fed, banking system, govts, QE, etc. etc. Any recommendations for something which I can direct him to which explains this all for a bright teenager who is already suitably cynical of mainstream media?

Thanks to those who responded with some good suggestions, I launched some SMerits at you as further thanks. Those links should give him something to get stuck into.  I'm keen myself to have a listen to "The richest man in Babylon" - sounds especially alluring.

Usually, I don't like Trump at all, but I should say that he's at least trying to do his best. He's facing media literally on a daily basis, unlike many leaders around the globe who're only releasing stupid voice notes from their bed. Trump is stupid, but he's trying to do the job sincerely. This is better than most; see Boris, he literally shared the Zoom's meeting ID with the world a few hours back:

To be fair I think that is a piss poor app if it shows a meeting ID as the program name in the main window. Totally unnecessary once you have connected to it. The screenshot proves that it is a security flaw.

The monthly update:

Down 10.33 % in the first quarter. Considering the "situation" - this is fine.

Some rambling... Well, I have been waiting for the next "crisis" since 2011 or 2012. Whatever that crisis would be. You have prepared yourself a little, see it coming, don't have to go to the office one day, start growing food, enjoy your hobbies, burning used oil or wood without Greta breathing down your neck and relax while observing others stumble relatively unprepared through it, some adapting well to the new situation, the majority not, right?

Not yet, working from home now with a shitty VPN solution my employer must have pulled out of a vending machine (already got an email they spent xxx k for the entire company and we should be grateful that all are still able to work Lips sealed). The colleague with whom I share my duties has to supervise his children on part-time basis now. No problem, the workload decreases during an emerging crisis... Negative, we are at 150% or something like that, working now 12 hours a day. Feels like the last "crisis" 2008/2009... More work, same payment, be grateful. Roll Eyes

The good news is, I was indeed prepared, have some tp and can (still) enjoy a walk in almost empty streets during my lunch break, this is new, love it.

Gentlemen, stay safe, take care of what is important to you, maybe buy more if you can - you might need it later (not talking about tp), be patient and enjoy the show, whether this is a crisis or not and - last but not least - have a pleasant month of April!

Big pharma bla bla bla bla (conspiracy) bla bla bla no sorry, it's enough please

Big Pharma saved my life a few years ago.

I had hepatitis-C to the point that my AST levels (standard liver function blood test) were around 300. Normal healthy levels are about 20 and warning levels are around 40.

After some European academics discovered a way to culture hep-C virus in petri dishes, American Big Pharma was able to identify a protein required by the virus to replicate (but was of no use to us) and they devised a blocker.

Yes, American Big Pharma shamelessly profiteered to the point of price gouging. They justified their $95k price per patient (Harvoni) by saying it was less than the >$250k cost of keeping patients in the hospital until they died. I wonder if Gilead Sciences ever made a donation to the European Universities?

Luckily once the idea was out, good old capitalism kicked in. Soon you could fly to India on a Hep-C vacation to get cured for <$1.2k. Where there's a table to go under or a back door to go through, things will go under and through.

Soon other Big Pharma companies made their versions. My hepatologist used his influence as the head of the Liver Foundation of Canada to get Merck to supply me with their version (Zepatier) for free under the guise of "compassionate care" since I was over 65 years old. They even sent it right to my door by courier.

I took one large tablet every day for 90 days. It was like taking a vitamin pill, no side effects or anything. One-A-Day. After 30 days my AST levels were down to 20 (normal) and after the full 90 day treatment, comprehensive tests showed me to be clear of the virus. I was tested clear again after 3 more months and 3 months after that. I shook the doc's hand, thanked him, saying that I hoped we'd never meet again (at least not professionally!) and wished him a happy retirement.

Through the treatment I continued belting back way too many overpriced ballpark beers, bottles of Guinness at my local live music bar, and of course assorted yummy cocktails. Didn't miss a beat.

Big Pharma? Yep, they can be greedy heartless profiteering scum, but they can also be of use.
___

I keep wondering if they could use the same paradigm to develop blockers for proteins required by other viruses, Covid-19 for example.

Here's one for the conspiracy theorists. Maybe they already have and are waiting to produce and stockpile enough for their grand debut to maximize profits before governments have a chance to take over production or competitors move in. What are a few hundred thousand human lives when there's some profiteering to be done?

Disclaimer: I'm not a conspiracy theorist but I'm not a conspiracy denier either.
