I'm planning to make stacks of 12 boards. I've chosen a OCZ ZX850W PSU. It's a single rail with max. 70A at +12V. It has 4 PCI-e connectors, so I can connect to 4 boards. From each of this boards I'll daisy chain to 2 other boards by the terminal block. Power should be sufficient. The PSU should operate in its efficient range, and the current on the single wires is not too high.

I was also busy with the power cables. It isn't that easy to find PCI splitter cables, but I found these: http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/491429885/Y_splittler_power_extension_cable.htmlminimum order 50 pieces. Lets take 37.5W per board, so each 6 pin PCI power cable will handle 2 boards. This will limit the number of boards per power supply, which only has a limited number of 6 pin PCI power connections. Maybe it's better to find a power distribution board like Avalon is using, so we can split the power from the ATX motherboard connector into many 6 pin PCI cables ? I'll continue searching.

Your solution indicates a much higher current than the 75W for a PCI cable. Is that OK ?

Hey burnin, While reading this thread I saw you are asking for advice on PSU's. for this requirements i would take minimum 80plus gold or platinum PSUs with very good reviews. Therefore one should not make false economies or simply 'save the wrong way'. If you are planning to run the avalons 24/7 you should take a most efficient PSU what you can buy for your money. you will say thanks to your electricity bill and of course it is not funny to have a mining break of some days if your cheap bought PSU has a damage and you need time to get a new one...

Do you have a source for the 75W limitation? I'll look into the PSU reference guide. That is the reference design, yes. You have 75w per PCI-e 6 pin cable. Since The GPUs became just too insanely power hungry with time the 8 pin was added. An 8 pin pci-e plug brings 150w, a 6 pin brings 75w maximum. Therefore, the maximum power a GPU can take is 75+150+150 = 375w at the moment. Additional to that, you will find that burnin has one of these nice green block adapter solutions on the board. That means that from my point of view, you can use EVERY single of these yellow 12v variations to power a SINGLE board: You just need to use either an adapter or cut it off, crimp it and then connect it to a board. Remember that there is a maximum power draw per module on the PSU though. Theoretically you daisy chain 700w off from ONE module, but this build will surely make you meet a fire extinguisher scenario... In the ideal scenario, you put as little as possible on every line and have one module for every board. The 8 Pin PCI-e should be able to take 2-3 boards though.

I have been searching on Google and the general consensus is that a 6pin PCI can easily handle 150W. The difference between the 75W 6 pin and 150W 8 pin is just 2 ground wires. Some people even put the 6pin cable into the 8 pin connector of a GPU without problems.

You will have 12 boards of 40W = 480W Your power supply can deliver 70A @ 12V = 840W 80% optimum power drain = 480W, so 100%=600W in stead of 840W. So you could go for a smaller PSU maybe ?

I'm running a 3930K @ 4.2GHz 24/7 3-way SLI GTX 670's for my gaming and benchmarking rig and have 18 World Records at HWBot.

Some people even put the 6pin cable into the 8 pin connector of a GPU without problems. Correct, the specs of the connector state 13Amps per PIN. Just check that the cable gauge connected to those pins is sufficient, but 150W should be possible with any of them. So yes you can run 3 modules off one 6pin plug. I think i'll go for a ~850W, gold rated, single rail PSU perfect for one tower of 16 modules.

One of the best in terms of power, cost and reliability is the Antec HCG-900 which is very often $100 or less. Antec HCG-900 reviewHere is a good description of 80 PLUS and what it certifies. However, for the best setup (IMHO) you would want a great performing, modular PSU I would think. Something similar to this Seasonic 850 would be "perfect". You would be able to plug in extra 6 pin connectors to the appropriate output from the PSU without need for adapters. Simply email the PSU company and inquire about extra connectors, many times you can get them for free - or a very low price. The trick will be finding the best optioned modular PSU to use for your setup.
