The Crypto-Currency
Bitcoin and its mysterious inventor.

Joshua Davis
OCTOBER 10, 2011 (print edition date)  -  2011-10-02 ? (web abstract only)

http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2011/10/10/111010fa_fact_davis

The article gets a positive mention in nypost:
Quote
This week’s New Yorker offers at least two signals that our nation is indeed gurgling down the drain: 1) The government of North Carolina has essentially been bought by a fat-cat millionaire named Art Pope, and 2) this supposedly stuffy and sophisticated magazine has devoted no less than 10 pages to a profile of 21-year-old country songstress Taylor Swift, not including the gauzy full-page portrait. On the positive side, a piece on the very mysterious creator of the Internet currency bitcoin is more intriguing than it first appears.

http://www.nypost.com/p/news/business/bobbing_for_angles_Ty6bYpDJQVUKGg4FuzxyCJ#ixzz1ZhcyDzNc

Apparently the 2nd 'suspect' is from Finland - so the New Yorker story has hit the Finnish press  (tietoviikko.fi - A Finnish IT magazine)
Quote

"This suspect is a 31-year-old Finnish Technology Research Institute researcher George Lehdonvirta . He has studied virtual currencies, and he is a programmer background. He is also involved in other things, privacy issues, focused on the Electronic Frontier Finlandin (Effi) operation."

Is that the real article?  (The New Yorker one.)  Parts of it read like a hurriedly assembled summary of an article.
Quote
Then, in April, 2011, he sent a note to a developer saying that he had “moved on to other things.” He has not been heard from since. Tells about failed attempts to hack the bitcoin encryption code. Writer tries to deduce Nakamoto’s true identity from clues in his posts and his code. Describes the Crypto 2011 conference of cryptographers, where the writer went looking for Nakamoto. Writer speaks with two possible candidates, Michael Clear and Vili Lehdonvirta, both of whom deny that they are Nakamoto. Also tells about Kevin Groce, who runs a bitcoin-mining operation in Kentucky.
Not the standard of writing I'm used to seeing over there. Smiley

Is that the real article?

It's just an abstract . Hence the "ABSTRACT" prefix.

i think almost everyone with a higher profile in the bitcoin community would laugh like that when being asked if they were satoshi, and react in a similar way, so it doesnt prove anything obviously

That guy isn't in the bitcoin community (unless he is satoshi I guess) as far I understand. He was questioned because he is English and at a crypto conference.

But still not answering and laughing doesn't mean anything. Even saying that "I wouldn't tell you if I was" doesn't mean anything. I thinking speaker obviously means that Satoshi wouldn't tell you, and obviously he wouldn't.

I encourage everyone to find the full article or the magazine somewhere. Perhaps buy it! That was absolutely the best Bitcoin article I've ever seen, by far. Joshua Davis has been researching this for months.

Popular Moscow based news website lenta.ru reports that rusleaks.org is closed and asking for money via bitcoin.

rusleaks.org is apparently somewhat similar to wikileaks in nature, and is hosted outside of Russia.
Apparently the Russian Federal telecommunications department (RSKOMNADZOR) is trying to shut it down.

Quote
Creators RusLeaks site was closed and asked for money

"The creators have also published RusLeaks account number in an anonymous payment system Bitcoin and asked for their support. Earlier in his correspondence with " Finam.FM "they indicated that they intend to organize a fundraiser users."

The site currently states (translated via google):
Quote
Website paused, so it does not take those functions for which it was created.

We need your help: 1724LaPgjMDVHWLsMxz2FJyuYGmHKn4hvb (Bitcoin).

Thanks to everyone who has supported us!

It's not clear to me the exact nature of what the material rusleaks is/was leaking. Perhaps some russian speaking bitcoiners can clarify.

(please start a new thread in Bitcoin Discussion if you want to talk about this item)

Just a  relatively obscure blog (+ video)  - but I think it makes an interesting point about the business community's current (mis)perception of Bitcoin.
