No doubt the best alt is litecoin
Litecoin is first altcoin but not the best for sure Which is the best altcoin then? It's hard to tell which is best, bet just read specification and compare it, there some a lot more interesting ones with much greater grow potential

All alts have a chance to get on an exchange site and be worth something, but a small one. Dogecoin was a big eception making it within 2 weeks

Majority of these coins are clones of one another and offer nothing new or interesting. Sure, you can jump in early on some and make a little bit, but not even the most popular alts have any decent marketing or ideas behind them.

Litecoin is first altcoin but not the best for sure Which is the best altcoin then? Nextcoin (Nxt) is the only coin in the top 10 that has been rising in total market value lately acoording to: http://coinmarketcap.com/It is not very profitable to mine however. Until a few days ago dogecoin was definitely worth getting into. But since yesterday prices have plummeted and it is unlikely to recover.

Mining alt-coins seems to make the most sense if you go with what is currently most profitable. Mine a small amount (enough to minimize transaction fees), then go to an exchange and convert them to BitCoin. If all coins are currently in a dip, it might be best to wait until a rally to convert to BitCoin. Alt coins fluctuate more than BitCoin, so you'll get even more BitCoin if you convert when alt's are high.
This is FAR more profitable that trying to mine Bitcoins directly. Unless you already have ASIC hardware, you can't even begin to compete in that game.
Go to CoinChoose, CoinWarz, etc and look for an alt that has some mining/trading volume which tends to be among the most profitable. Note that some coins briefly appear at the top of the list, but have no following - don't waste your time even thinking about them. They'll probably plunge before you can trade them. I'd only mine a coin that has at least a few million $ in market cap.
WorldCoin and BBQcoin seem to be doing well recently. LiteCoin - not so good. Obviously that can (and does) change frequently. LiteCoin could be the best choice next week.

So how do you guys choose between the alt coins if you plan to invest at least as a small part of portfolio into them.
There are already more than 100 of them available and for sure tons of more coming.
What criteria do you use? Do you mainly focus on the top 10 in the market cap listing or try to find the rising stars?

If you don't want to risk too much stick with top 10 in capitalcap, but you can just dig little dipper follow news and it will be more clear where to invest. I really think older alcoins and bitcoin itself will be squeeze out with something newer and better

It seems to me that a wise altcoin investment strategy would be to split your resources evenly amongst all of them, or nearly all of them. There's really no way to tell which ones are going to do very well or very poorly.

I'm pretty new to the whole crypto scene after hearing it from a presentation in my accounting class. These tips are definitely helpful for me especially since I'm just starting out. Thanks for the precautions that you've offered!!

There are Altcoins and "Altcoins". Main altcoins are LTC, PPC, NMC, QRK, WDC. Those are stable altcoins which will really grow.
Than there are new altcoins which will maybe change rankings - so powerfull, much beauty, very fun. Wow. :-)
