Popular Russian bitcoin exchange BTC-e has been down for almost 3 hours with the official twitter saying they are having a "server maintenance".
The weird thing is, they have never had maintenance works without prior announcements in the past. And coincidently, bitcoin prices have been crashing since btc-e went down.
Are they hacked and just denying the attack by calling it a maintenance job (like most hacked websites choose to do) ??
Hopefully, btc-e comes back online soon.

Well if they said they are under maintenance then it might as well be true. Its hard to speculate, maybe they are just doing some thing before the looming Aug 1 split if it pushes. I suggest we just wait till their official announcement again to find out what's the truth behind the downtime. Let's just stay calm and not panic. I hope you already move your funds to a more secure wallet that you have total control like Electrum or Bitcoin core.

LOL. It is already pasted by Theymos himself giving us warning about how we should protect our bitcoin before Aug 1. So I assuming everyone should be moving their coins to a secured location. Probably is really a maintainance job

just FYI, btc-e has been hacked before. at least once and they lost a rather large amount of money. they paid their users in full and without any hassle.
and this is a simple scheduled maintenance they occasionally have.

It is not a Russian bitcoin exchange. Although the owners are Russians (they were Russian citizens in 2011, not sure whether they still hold the Russian passport or not), the exchange was originally based in Kiev (Ukraine). But now they are based in Sofia, Bulgaria. |

the exchanges always mysteriously go down when the price is plummeting. It makes me think there is something more going on to be honest.
Llike they shut down for a few hours to scoop up cheap coins or something. I honestly see it happens so much it can't be a coincedence any more.

They could honestly simply be getting overwhelmed due to the crazy price movements. This is likely the cause. Discouraging none the less though as it is an exchange many use.

probably they are preparing for the upcoming chain split/hard fork, i think many exchange will stop around 1 august to accomodate that thing, but btc-e is notorious for being an exchange that need many maintenance, i remember it was many times down

No news by now about hackers attack probably it would be spread around already and they should have noticed the users. But it's not excluded either. Anyway, don't think on worst at first, maybe it's only technical mainteinance and everything will be back to normal soon.

Nowadays almost all the exchange do maintenance. They prepare everything for the 1st of August. Usually there will be information before this happens. If true btce get hacking then of course the price of bitcoin can decrease drastically. We all hope that all this does not happen. |

yes hopefully so, we do not want Bitcoin to have case same with Ethereum, yesterday Ethereal is hacked and now Bitcoin will be also hacked. I hope not. |

Yes, I think they are making a habit of doing maintenance when there are huge trading volumes around. Could they at least informed customers if they have a maintenance? Something like a email will be enough so that it will not cause panic and speculations amongst its user base. Your guess is as good as mine. No news by now about hackers attack probably it would be spread around already and they should have noticed the users. But it's not excluded either. Hoping as well that it will be back to normal. Otherwise this will really have a negative impact to the price. As we all know any unwelcome news specially with the fragile situation we got will cause the market to tumble down. And we don't want that to happen. |
