Few people know this - but if BIP42 had not been implemented, the Bitcoin reward would cycle back to 50 BTC every 64 halvings.
And those few people apparently didn't include the hapless devs of more than one pre-BIP42 altcoin clone who decided it would be a good idea to change the block time to 30s and didn't know quite enough about the C++ underpinnings to realise that the halving scheme would simply cycle and repeat from the start - which came as a bit of an pleasant surprise for the person who got the second-time-round premine. Needless to say, after some initial misplaced enthusiasm by new aspirant hodlers for this unanticipated windfall period, a social consensus emerged that perceived the blockchain as irretrievably damaged beyond repair and so the chain was eventually abandoned.

Cheers

Hi Team,

I'm moving forward on more testing, however the testnet is still not syncing.
The mainnet tests I am doing will be normally under 1 MB, but there's still a risk it knocks Datacoin for a loop.
I will hold off on mult MB tests for now on mainnet, but note the testnet not syncing is an issue -- we need a robust testnet.

Anyone able to understand the problem of the testnet sync issue?

Kind Regards,
The Datasea

Etched a fun puzzle on Datacoin.
If you figure it out, you get a Bitcoin.

"This work is comprised of Satoshi Nakamoto's famous whitepaper words, scaled by Log N. Disparate ideas inspired Satoshi to create a solution to revolutionize modern socio-economics and industry. The work reflects on the elements that brought this technology to life, and challenges the underlying security model. Hidden in plain sight lies something more: a treasure hunt. 1 BTC is concealed within the work." ~~ CryptoGreetings. Anyone able to understand the problem of the testnet sync issue?
I haven't been able to grab a chance to find out.

I did take some time to process the Yandex tardumps into a git repos: https://github.com/datacoinproject/datacoin-core (08 is the last, I lost track during the flurry of Windows fixes). Might be worth using that as a base to explore testnet issues.

I've also contributed an in-wallet block explorer (fwiw) in a separate branch: https://github.com/datacoinproject/datacoin-core/tree/feature.blockexplorer - the community can decide collectively whether it's considered to be worth the maintenance effort to include.

Cheers

This is fabulous!
And to make sure my amateur self understands this, https://github.com/datacoinproject/datacoin-core is the 0.15.99.08 version?
And this is where we go to submit bugs and such? (I just submitted https://github.com/datacoinproject/datacoin-core/issues/1 )

Also, having a in-wallet blockexplorer is a great idea -- the more blockexplorers the better I think -- I currently pay 100+ dollars a year to keep the cryptoID one going Smiley https://chainz.cryptoid.info/dtc/

To be blunt, I'm personally not worried about investors at this moment.
I'm focused on a minimal viable product -- and we don't have that yet.
We just got to 0.15.99.08, and it's not even fully tested yet (testnet isn't even operating).
When we have something that's robust, then I'll worry about taking this blockchain to the next level Smiley

But if you have some ideas to bring to the table -- please share them and help to make them happen! Smiley

my optimism may have gotten the better of me, but my half-full side thinks it may be a foreign investor . . .  Smiley

Etched another puzzle on the Datacoin blockchain!
Just about 1/2 a megabyte -- etched really smooth.

Yes, that is correct. The commit history is labelled "08", etc. The default checkout is the master branch and the block explorer addition is in the separate feature.blockexplorer branch

Hi Graham

Can we just upload Verionum's compiled 08 Windows client as a "release" or does that involve some sort of process in git?

Cheers

GDPR

I wonder what effect the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will have on uncensorable cryptocurrencies like Datacoin.

The effect will be close to zero.
But generally, the  "right to be left alone" or "right to be forgotten" is just a theory.
People were handing out their data online for years. Good luck trying to become forgotten now...

^^ exactly.
First of all we must see how many people are really using cryptocurrencies, and using it not only in the way to profit from it.

If it would be more than 5-10%, I would be surprised.

Er, I don't know. I've never travelled the "release" path in github (I have that joyful experience to look forward to with Slimcoin at some point soon). For now, all I can do is point you to the GitHub docs (https://help.github.com/articles/about-releases/) - which, on a quick skim do imply that git is actively involved.

Chicago, Verionum, gjhiggins, Hamburger, Extro,

Is anyone able to get their testnet to sync?

And if not, what can we do to restore this?

I can't emphasize enough the need for a healthy testnet.

Is there anything I can do to facilitate this? Name it.

Here's my issue report in GitHub for more information:

Well, first I need to get the latest version to compile.
The builtin miner was giving me some dependency issues.

Then after it builds, I'll try firing up the testnet node.
After that is done, we can check on making sure there are some seed nodes available on the testnet for the masses.

I agree with you completely -- and would have erected the testnet before unleashing new code onto Mainnet.

Best Regards,
-Chicago
