I think limiting the amount you can post is not a good idea here is a few reasons why you would need to post 20 posts in less than 1h

1 asking for help and talking about how to fix the problem

2 giveaway threads ( if I say all sent on all my giveaways that would be  20+ posts )

3 a auction people asking questions

4 running a Google doc exchange for a new coin

5 selling a product

there is a whole load more but I cant be bothered to type them all out

if you don't like someone's posts there is always the ignore button Smiley

Quote
time = number of two-week periods in which you've posted since your registration
How is this determined? Is only one post required per timeframe? Does this decrease over time if no new  posts have been made? Does it correlate to the time online?

No it is much simpler than that.

English version.

Your activity is the smaller of
a) your actual post count
OR
b) the number of two week periods since you signed up (rounded up) * 14

Maybe an example helps.

Say you signed up today and posted 100 posts today
Your posts: 100
Your time: 1 period * 14 = 14 (rounded up remember)
Your activity: 14 is less than 100 so 14
Activity: 14

Now say you don't post anything for the next two weeks. In two weeks your activity will be
Your posts: 100
Your time: 2 periods * 14 = 28
Your activity: 28 is less than 100 so 28
Activity: 100

Now say 18 more two week periods pass and in that time you make another 100 posts
Your posts: 200
Your time: 20 periods * 14 = 280
Your activity: 200 is less than 280 so 200.
Activity: 200

Lol.  Fair enough.  But I wasn't trying to spam for a badge.  Just for a privilege (starting a new topic) I had already previously earned.

You can start new topics without being a hero member.

That's a good idea though. If only hero members could start topics then there wouldn't be so many useless "why are there only 21m Bitcoin" topics.

I vote to change the rule to only hero members can start new topics. At the very least theymos could change it so you can't start a new topic unless you have clicked into every page of every sticky on the forum.
That's a stupid idea, the forum would not be as active as it is now and did you ever look in the marketplace section? I think not. Tell me how many people that have created posts about selling products and services or currency exchange are hero members? Very few posts are created by hero members. This would kill the marketplace. Please open you eyes and think before posting.

No, I was mostly thinking about the marketplace forum. The newbies section allows posting with low post counts and can also host the marketplace section. No one would need to be whitelisted to post that great new scam product or service. It might even reduce the number of posts in this section and reduce the amount of work for the mods making their job easier too: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=83.0

My activity is 27 and I have been registered for only 5 days. I have posted 27 times. Shouldn't my activity be 14 or so?

The signature campaign posters adding useless redundant fluff to their posts to reach their minimum word count are lowering my IQ.

I suspect that the 14 day cycle is based on calendar dates and not based on when you signed up.  As such, the first few days you were in one 14 day cycle, and the more recent few days you are in a second 14 day cycle.  This allows you to get a maximum "Activity" of 28.

Oh, I get it. So, in other words, I signed up probably a couple of days before the 14-day period ended?

The next logical step would be to cut the status of people who haven't posted in X time interval.

You can't be a Hero if you've not posted the past week, you can't be Senior if you've not posted the past month. It'd help with the buying/hacking old accounts to prop scams.

This.
satoshi would wind up being a newbie Cheesy

Edit: he's fixed at "founder"

Nah, he's listed permanently as "Founder".

This is bullsh*t. If your going to do a post/activity ratio crap, you need to have both available next to the avatar. No one is just going to click your profile?

It's discrediting longtime forum members. Please Fix this immediately!!

No, changing people's titles to "Scammer" and "Untrustworthy" despite evidence of the opposite is discrediting longtime forum members. This is allowing long time forum members to be respected for what they actually are--- ACTIVE-- and stop rewarding newbies for creating new accounts and spamming.

Well if it helps.  I suppose people will see someone with Untrustworthy but very high Activity as a very Active Untrustworthy.

The activity number is determined in this way:
time = number of two-week periods in which you've posted since your registration
activity = min(time * 14, posts)

Activity is updated every 30 minutes.

The new membergroup limits work like this:
GroupRequirement
Brand New0 posts
Newbie(none)
Jr. Member1 post written over 4 hours ago
Memberactivity: 15
Full Memberactivity: 60
Sr. Memberactivity: 200
Hero Memberactivity: 400

I'm not 100% sure that the membergroups work correctly. Tell me if you see any bugs.

ok, so my activity is same as my posts right now, that means my posts is the limiting number.

It is the minimum of days and posts so they are both the limiting number.

I think that this new system is good and it should probably be harsher to get up the ladder

Suggestion::in some boards only hero members should be able to start topics, you would get more signal less noise in these boards

Hmmm, I must be off on something.   Just looking at activity.  I have 15 (2 week) periods and 263 posts.   Shouldn't my activity be  a little higher than 154.   From the formula I thought it should be more like 210?

cheers.

Only if you've posted at least 14 times in every two week period.

For example, if you only posted 13 times during one period but 14 times or more in all the others, you're activity would be 209.

Still around.

Only if you've posted at least 14 1 times in every two week period.

For example, if you only posted 13 0 times during one period but 14 14 extra times or more spread out in all the others, you're activity would be 209 196.
