ICO's need to have atleast the below elements before even deciding to invest:
1. Needs to be legit
2. Reasonable profit provided by the company
3. Solid Team with great experience
4. Great startup or a nice business idea
5. A plan that will work now and in the future

First of all the founders and advisors. If a project has weak and unknown founders without experience it's the red flag number one. Excluding cases when I know the founders by myself as a legit persons.

The hype should be the important thing. If you are aiming very big profit in from ico and you can try to search those projects that get huge hype just like oracle. That gives you a lot of the profit after being placed on the exchange site. Crypterium already had a huge hype.

Many participants in the ico just try to flip their money.

Always look for a good whitepaper. If they haven't bothered to do one or it's not clear and concise then the project isn't likely to take off. The whitepaper is a number 1 step to launching a project. Because it shows it's future users transparency and the goal of the project. Your statement is somewhat true.  ICO's are no longer as profitable as they use to be.  Many projects have dropped below ICO prices.  There are some that do instantly double or even triple in prices once it hit's the exchanges but those are pretty rare.  These days people want to see a working product before investing into something.
