In my opinion the community gives it value. As it is with every currency, if its not used and accepted by the people there is no value in it. Same goes for gold. After all that is also just a metal, if people decided to value iron more and do use that as a store of value that is commonly accepted, this maybe would be todays precious "gold".

Everything is worthless until the human - the owner of any market in the world - set the value. Remember, prehistoric times have no concept of money because human intellectuals have advanced and have created a diverse monetary system as they are today. The way to create an altcoin with some value is mostly the idea behind the coin, what will it be used for and is the business model either unique or proven successful. It will also need to have a large and supportive community behind it, people that are either willing to invest the time to work for airdrops and setup master nodes or people that will contribute with funds during an ICO.
