I suggest you should not to avoid XMR, ZEC and ETH - they are still one of the most stable coins.

I'm guessing a large group of them would be tech-inclined people who might be interested in coins like IOTA, LSK, RaiBlocks. Next to that group,people who are interested in investing, economics, etc.So maybe things like REQ, XRP, ARK, Blocknet, Walton.

Since everything have settled now, i think BTC will go up 1st then the alts. For long term you can never go wrong with BTC and ETH. They may look expensive right now but in the long run will look cheap. Worst mistake of people is investing in high returns and not taking their profit and then losing all their money when their investments crash. It is also good to join twitter to stay updated of the developers of your invested coin so you know when to hold or sell.

personally I prefer big coin coins with high fame to make long term investments, let's call it ETH, BTC, XRP, and NEO. I believe that they have good potential.

There are many coins that you can invest in now and make some good profits in future and some of them are highly cheap coins. Bitcoin is going to make a very high significant upward movement any moment from now.  Ethereum is also good that you can  add it to the list of the coins that you may like to invest.
Tokens like tron, lendconnet and lino are many opportunities out there that you can take advantage of and make serious profit in future.

How much your capital ?
if your capital is big I suggest you invest in ETH or Bitcoin, but if your capital is only small I suggest you look for coins that have cheap price but have potential in the future, you can look for coins / tokens ICO, the average coin ICO has prices are relatively cheap and have potential for the future

agree because the big coins already have good investment security in the sense of avoiding the risk of scam, usually I look for coins that have a large marketcap like Ethereum, Ripple, Stellar, Neo, Litecoin and of course Bitcoin because the big marketcap give a little proves that enthusiasts public from that coins this is big and the possibility of prices continue to rise will always be there, so for the long term of course the most important is trusted coin #imo

I like to invest briefly on ico projects, new ICO projects have brought me a lot of profit but it also took away my lot of money because I have invested in scam ICO projects. This is bad . But I still prefer short term investments in ICO projects.

If you want long term holding then i would suggest to go for the coins which are in the top 20 and the price is below a dollar because my thinking is that these coins appreciate later in time just don't know when. If you buy less than a dollar and in 3 year it will priced at 5 dollars so there is profit.

For long term investments, Bitcoin comes on the top of everything. Please do not forget that. I know there are so many people here who have invested much on altcoins but they cannot just deny that Bitcoin is the safest and the fastest rising in the long run. That is why we cannot just set Bitcoin aside. For altcoins, the good investments include Ethereum, Ripple, Litecoin, Waves, Strat, Monero, IOTA, Cardano, Ethereum Classic, and some more. Actually, there are so many coins on the top 50 that will definitely grow even higher.

I you want to be on the safe side I'd suggest ETH & NEO for 2018.

However, don't be fooled my the price on coinmarketcap alone, as a guy above me stated. You always want take the maximum supply into consideration. Some coins simply cannot reach a price BTC managed to reach because there are too many coins in circulation.
