Since you are just new then I suggest that you should just stick to BTC ,
Investing in an ICO is risky yeah you could get some bonus but what if their coin ends up being a shit coin that means your  investment is wasted you just loss some money,
Before investing in ICO you should know if they have a good platform their team or dev is active and doesn't have a bad background.

In 2017, most of the price of tokens would increase after ICO was end and these token was listed on exchange site, this brought to investors a lot of profit, so most of people invested in ICOs instead of Bitcoin.
But at the moment, you are hard to able to be found an ICO which can brought benefit when it's listed on exchange sites, the price of them is almost going down although they have a good project behind.
The best you should use 50% your capital to invest in Bitcoin and 50% invest in ICOs and you should hold token that you bought in ICOs at least 1 -2 years.

Both ideas are have a great benefits because they have both the same characteristics which is being volatile. Although, Bitcoin is already an established coin and will surely gives us a huge amount of profit if we can hodl it on longer-term. Altcoins can also be beneficial but we need to be vigilant about its price because there are times that it quickly turns to high value and will only last for about an hour.

If ico fails, you receive money back, like you hold your bitcoin. But if iis good ico you have chance get hight profit.

But they have ICO is worthless to invest because they invest to ICO and the price after listing to the market the price is lower. you need to consider how much budget you have. how much of that budget are you willing risk. if you are on a small budget an ico would be a better option in my opinion. the problem is that the risk is much greater with ico's.
