Yeah that's really important to have a good product but this will also depends how good is the team to promote their project as this will needs good community that will patronize their product. I'm tracking on the progress of KickCity as this has potential once they will fully launch their platform.

the product shows the 'seriousness' state of the projects and will minimize the risk of the project being a scam. You should invest in something that at least have a working prototype or better, have an mvp to make sure the project is a legit one and can be trusted to bring you a steady growth of value appreciation.

Of course, it's important that what you invest in is what the project does, not what else. Although the initial investment is optimistic about the future of the product, it is the ultimate goal. As long as it is always working, then there is no problem. Otherwise, if you only invest in short-term, ico will sell it later, then you are bound to have limited profits.

I think a product is very much important in an ICO and it will be its key feature to show in a community. A product will show that there's really progress regarding an ICO and this will encourage the participants to partake with it more.
