Thoughts?  NxtChg, I know you were working on address format, what do you think?

http://wiki.nxtcrypto.org/wiki/New_Address_Format

Thanks NxtChg, the format I wrote
"Nxxxx xxxx X xxxx xxxxT" or even just "Nxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx"
instead of NXTxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx

this addresses two of the "arguments against" branding

Arguments against:

    Longer addresses, usability suffers.
->  Harder to find address visually, because all 3 first letters are the same.
->  Needless duplication in case of:

Phone: 123-4122-312
Email: john@doe.com
Skype: john_doe
BTC: 1dff943fjfj90234jfidsjf98430jffj03
NXT: NXT-JOHN-2342-S4FW4-DFSESE

Even if the branding is more subtle I think it still functions.

I also prefer removing confusing letters/numbers rather than mapping I=1 etc. to the same code, "For rare cases where you need to actually type in the address".  Maybe I'm wrong but I thought the point of using shortened "visible ID" addresses in NXT is so people can type an address.  Mapping I=1 to the same code makes people nervous because they don't know it will do that.  I think using unambiguous alphabet is better.  What is the value in making it easy for people create a vanity address that starts with a word,  Why not just register an alias?

IMO, if we are to use a prefix, it should ONLY be N and not NXT, and then there should be no dash between the N and the rest of the account.

AND that N should participate in whatever error correcting code we choose.  If it doesnt then it is completely useless.

I still say no prefix at all, I like shorter account numbers - less to deal with.

Rickyjames, Texas conference etc --

I can send you additional business card holders. Also, I'll have my dad do a test run on the stainless steel water bottles and see how they turn out (fingers crossed).

rj, justabit, nifty etc -- how many people do we anticipate a team of Nxt representatives would meet over the course of a conference? IOW, if I was to engrave a batch of bottles (or keychains, or <insert swag>), how many should I whip up? 20? 100?

Swag that is big and bulky is going to be very difficult to manage if we have no exhibitor table to use as a base.  Basically I intend to walk around two days shaking hands so any swag to give out would need to be small and light so I could lug it.  Engraving on objects is neat and I appreciate the effort but I also think it is expensive and I hate to see that go to waste when people just chuck it into a back drawer when they get home.  To me the key items are brochures and business cards - cheap, lights, full of information.

Exactly, if we are not getting a booth, I'd argue that even brochures is a bit much (unless they are quite small) and not common at these events.

- Business Cards
- Good handshake and eye contact
- Ability to figure out who are the decision makers
- Ability to setup mini 10 minute meetings with booth merchants
- Frequent updates to the community during the event

That's the slam dunk, more than most people are doing there.

For the Miami conference NiftyNikel emailed me a notification when there was something to add to the Nxtcrypto Twitter, Facebook or Google pages. We had pretty consistent coverage of the conference. PM me if you would like my help with upcoming events. With 5400+ (3200+ talking about this) FB followers and 740 Twitter followers, this could be an important way to let the community know about your participation there.

its sort of like the recognition of this problem has caused people to attempt to compensate for it and in so doing they created a situation where its less of a problem in the system where its supposedly a problem than in other systems where its not.

Thanks. Any other comments? Cheesy

May I add this to the nxtcrypto.org website? There are PIN buttons to pin it to Pinterest and I can share it socially too.

when is the nxt distributed exchange going to be up and running?

When the community tests it and is satisfied with the result.

ok im just wondring if mastercoin get theres out first will that put us on the back foot? and just to clarify, distributed exchange.. does that mean i will be able to put fiat on to it and buy nxt or is it simply for trading assets with colored coins ect? im just thinking if there is a way to buy nxt with out having to put your money on centralized exchange and run the risks of loosing it through the exchange closing up and doing a runner/mistakes in orders(cryptsy) and all the withdrawl problems ect..  is that even achievable?

You will be able to put fiat on it using a gateway and then trade that asset on the p2p AE.
We are going to try to provide a gatway. The EUR Sepa purchase and redeem of assets are ready.
BTC purchase/redeem assets is in development and should be ready by start of next week.

As soon as there is an AE trade client done and AE is released our NXT-EURO Gateway can be opened.

I dont know other ways of entering with fiat in the AE.. this sort of gateways will still be sort of centralized!

I'm trying hard, but I don't really understand how the initial distribution of NXT works.

A number of accounts get the bulk of NXT and it's up to them to distribute it?  What's their incentive other than building the number of people involved to increase the demand?  If they build the demand, the price goes up so it's better to hold their balance as much as possible...

Where am I going wrong here?

You've got nothing wrong.  That is all the incentive they need.  Anytime money is created, the people that have it at its creation face a challenge to get it into the hands of many people and convert it from "money" into "an economy".   They do it right, their remaining retained holdings rise in value.  There is no perfect way to do this.  NXT is just one of many, many attempts to gt it right, and is doing distributions at exchanges and with bounties.  Every cryptocoin and every national fiat currency faces this challenge.  Central banks do it with fractional reserve banking (and the current debt levels means they are not doing it well).   NXT did it with a six-week open enrollment period where anybody could kick in up to 1 BTC to obtain a proportional share of the one-time NXT created.   PoW coins do it with "mining".

Interesting experiments to watch, eh?

Ricky, I totally agree. All the national coins have this challenge.  The time scale is more of a challenge in the 'digicoin age' though.  Traditionally national currencies have developed together with the nation and that has been over 100's of years.  With BTC it has been over 4 or so years.  I think NXT is still in its infancy and if it is to survive in the long-term the currency really really next to be distributed to a large number of people and various entitles very quickly.  Otherwise, despite its advantages, its popularity will die slowly off like many others.

we are accepting testers will open a topic @ Nextcoin & nxtcrypto shortly.

runs on the blockchain....we have a HIDDEN faucet inside the app which tops you up with Nxt if you have no funds in your account when you first open the app.

100% runs on Nxt blockchain

...
If there ever was a NXT wallet, it would be an illusion for general public users.  NXT is a brainwallet, all a user's NXT is stored on the encrypted blockchain itself and not in a separate file that can be taken offline and stored in a bank safe deposit box.  This is why long 40+ random passwords are so important - with NXT your holdings are available to you anywhere at any time, but they can be attacked continuously by hackers as well.  There is no hiding your NXT away from others offline, it is always in the cloud.
...

I dont think this is correct.  You could completely skip the  passphrase step and just generate 256 bits of entropy in a NXT wallet.dat file to be used as a private key and have the client to use this data directly instead of asking for passphrase.

I believe it would also be possible to create a bitcoin client that uses a brainwallet password as well, where a passphrase is used in an algorithm to generate the appropriate bitcoin addresses (though this scenario would have the same risks we are seeing with short passphrases, though the difference is that with bitcoin, there wouldnt be a 2^64 vs 2^256 thing we have)

I believe BCNext chose the brainwallet method to make it possible to actually contain an account in your head, so as to be able to leave absolutely no trace on paper or disk if so desired.  But theres just nothing from preventing a client to use the bitcoin method

ebereon: and how can you manage it? You can connect it to the notebook or google nexus 7?  Smiley

Yes, it will be preconfigured to login in a wlan found with name/SSID "NXT" and password "RasPI-NXT" and DHCP enabled.

So start wifi tethering on your G3/ UMTS mobile phone with these settings and the RasPI will automaticaly connect to it when booted. Then open your webbrowser on your phone and connect to the NRS (NXT server) with the ip of the RasPI like you do on your computer at home. The IP should be shown from the wifi tethering app.

I have not tested this jet, but will do in the next days.

I still don't know if this is what the community want to show on the both at the conference. I got only some nice words but nothing concret jet. Where should I send it? Who is covering the cost if it gets stolen etc.

Greets,
eb

Please point me where you found "Exposing the private key" phrase, I can't see it.

his claim is that since the public key is a curve25519 hash of the private key that it is exposed.   Roll Eyes

Yes exactly.  You guess the private key "since it was created by a human", then you crack the account.   That is why there are so many Nxt accounts that get cracked.  You don't even need to do the cracking against the network,  you just do it against the public block chain.

If the developers don't think this is fundamentally broken,  then I really question their judgement.

Any UK Nxt holders? We need to position ourselves to get on Bittylicious to increase liquidity. The ability to purchase Nxt without Bitcoin is a big deal and one we should put some energy towards.

My KYC/registration with Bittylicious is pretty much complete, I can see they have about 4 Alt's on there already.
I don't know if anyone else has contacted them - I've emailed them to see if they will let me sell NXT.

Submitted my seller application now, status is under review, stated I want to sell NXT - lets see what they say.

Well I can sell BTC and other stuff for FIAT on Bittylicious but this is their comment on NXT;

"We don't do NXT yet as it requires some back end changes."

I will do some other trades and keep asking.

But to do that,  then you need a wallet.   That's because the user will not be able to memorize the key.

Nxt doesn't have a wallet.

Then it will do nothing for branding, because it will just look like part of the address (that's also true for the ridiculous NxxxxXxxxxT scheme).

I also prefer short addresses, but since some people strongly believe in branding we added an optional "NXT-" prefix.
