Post your configuration, most importantly the command line w/flags you are using to start CGMiner or a copy of the configuration file you are using, and what video card(s) you are using. Can't help much without this info.

skillrun,

Download and use an older version of cgminer, I use 3.6.6 and many miners I know use 3.5x versions as well. The newer versions of cgminer do not support mining with a GPU(graphics cards) or the mining of scrypt coins such as EarthCoin.

Hope that helps.

Why on earth would the dev want to mine any coins let alone 270 MILLION!?

Crazy indeed. So, does anyone else get the feeling of a pump and dump? Unless the next giveaway is for 200+ million then I feel one coming on. Fancy graphics doesn't make a good dev team & successful coin.

3.7.2 supports GPU mining ... that's the version I'm on.

Thanks for your help

First off, I would never recommend mining on a laptop. Mining is an intense process, and you will likely ruin your laptop before even coming close to making enough money to be worth that kind of risk.

Secondly, you can't just double click on CG miner to run, you have to specify (at the very least) what algorithm you're mining, a mining pool URL (or localhost URL), username and password.

Finally, I'm not sure that you would even get 10kh/s from your 4200 HD GPU... so I guess what I'm trying to say, is mining with your current hardware setup is probably one of the worst ideas ever.

If you really want to get into mining, do some research in the mining hardware subforums so you can get an idea of what it really takes. Your laptop is not going to cut it.

Not really. Pre-mining isn't always a bad thing. The chances that the coin takes on a life and does anything is pretty slim. Pre-mining allows the dev team to have bounties, giveaways, fund faucets, and all that kind of stuff.

Without that, what would the devs do? Giving away coins is a great way to get people involved. Just look at Dogecoins. People were giving it away like there was no tomorrow and it has caught on.

If you're a developer, and not a gamer, chances are you don't have massive mining rigs. You don't need 8 GPUs on a software development machine.

The entire anti-pre-mining thing is a bit overdone sometimes.

Now, 2% might be a bit high... Not sure what an appropriate level is... I guess that it depends on the projected lifespan of mining until only transaction fees remain.

There is a fine balance to achieve there, and I think we're still seeing a lot of experimentation going on.

Now, for a lot of coins... well, I just don't see much value other than for gambling on. Meh... Whatever. If you're buying USD, you're gambling. If you're buying Euro, you're gambling. Foreign exchange is just pure gambling. So what's the difference? Crypto is more volatile, etc. etc. etc.
