You know, I was just coming back to say how nice it is to have an entire forum just for the coin so that all the subjects that are spread all over this thread here can be organized for easy searching. I mean, so many people are asking the same questions over and over, and they've been answered, but get lost in the pages and are not really searchable (forum search ability everywhere is abysmal) Anyway, this looks really great! Lets all move over! +1 I always feel like this forum moves hellishly fast! I was here last night, and it has taken me about an hour just to read through everything. I suppose it's a tribute to how interesting everyone is on here ...

@camo
I will get it up and running if you are willing to get on IRC. I feel that it is detracting the main conversation of this thread. I said a page ago that I got the most difficult combo up and running, so this is not a big deal. Just wanted this thread to discuss Darkcoin related topics and the huge news from today which is SPECTACULAR imo but is getting buried in other sub-discussions.

So I just had a random idea and I wanted to see if there's any interest in me developing this (after DarkSend of course).
I think it would be really neat and much more friendly if you could type something like "Evan" in the Pay To field. Bitcoin/Darkcoin addresses are just really long and impossible to remember, it's even harder to show a Bitcoin address in a video or picture without a QR Code.
The solution? Named Addresses
When mining, the miner who successfully mines the block could "name" a darkcoin address. It would be permanently added to the block chain as an alias of that darkcoin address. The names could be up to 8-20 characters and would be paired with the 160 bit address. Upon loading the blockchain the client would form a cache of all of these and then they could be used in place of the full addresses.
It's decentralized, permanent and tamper proof.
The block explorer could even show the alias instead of the address when it had it available, so in a DarkSend you could tell that "Evan" paid someone, but you would have no idea who.
How do you get a name?
This could be an opportunity for the pool operators to make extra cash. They would take orders for name/address pairs and tell the daemon which ones to add to the blockchain next. The blockchain could only support 1 of these per block, so there could be a premium for adding them. Eventually I could see a centralized market where you buy a spot in the queue to get a name.
Thoughts?
I think this is an awesome usability feature, but not so relevant to the spread and positioning of Darkcoin at its current and near-term stage. Everyone agrees here that the major obstacle that drk faces now is getting exposure to the greater population. I see this achieved either by marketing [as suggested by many] or by begin trading in a prominent exchange with loads of users and cash [as voted by many here in poles]. In regards to marketing, I believe we need to start sending emails to every blogger out there. In regards to trading, we were very unfortunate to be traded on 2 exchanges that got hacked this month. This impacts users' confidence and willingness to transfer coins into an exchange and buy drk. Right now, this point-of-failure called "an exchange" is imho our weakest link. Our daily volume is shrinking and no big exchange is pushing the coin. i've heard NXT users speak about p2p trading, where you don't need an exchange any more and your coins are safe in your own wallet. If this is not a development that would take months, perhaps this could be our next feature, and by doing so, we leap above the exchange factor. In any case, I believe we should be getting out of Beta real soon and stating to the world - "It works. It's trustworthy. It's anonymous." I think more useful would be the ability to also send small, twitter-sized messages instead of just transactions via darksend. Imagine that you could combine a transaction with a message or something like that. Hash the characters together and send it like a transaction, and all of a sudden, you have a really well encrypted, anonymous message system that overlays on an existing network.

What would you guys think of doing a fundraiser for the Electronic Frontier Foundation in DRK?
Marketing, support a good cause, and promote DRK as privacy centric in a good way.

This compromises anonymity (unless the message is utterly generic, in which case there's no reason to send it). You could argue that it's one person voluntarily compromising his/her own anonymity but because of the way DarkSend works, they're chipping away at the anonymity of everyone else involved in the mixing.

Nice gun shop , will order that ak and some pistols. Any childporn site in the making? This is really big news. Hope silkroad will add the coin to.
^Retard cop. A coin not having a public block chain has nothing to do with any of that. It's the equivalent of saying that if a church has window blinds and you can't see in, they must be selling guns and drugs inside.

Something just doesn't add up with the Armory using Darkcoin. There is absolutely no way any legit darknet site would use Darksend while it is still closed source.
What am I missing?

On the another note, Eduffield are you still planning to attend the New York conference? Didn't quite get a clear picture on what your intention was due to some changes.
No, I was struggling to figure out how to do that with some family stuff that came up. Plus they downsized it to a couple hundred seats and it was really expensive to get there and the tickets are really expensive ($200) so I'm not sure how much impact it would have actually have had. I'd much rather speak at another conference, maybe one in Cali. I'm so glad I read this today... I was going to get at least one ticket... But not if DRK isn't going to be represented! Ha! More money for my power bill

Just a fund raiser in general, or a specific issue? I think in general. They currently accept Bitcoin: https://supporters.eff.org/donate and I wouldn't expect them to put up a darkcoin button (at least day one). But I would be willing to contact them and see if they'll accept a donation in Darkcoin and explain the concept of DRK and why it is good for the EFF and people who care about privacy.

won't sending multiple transactions to your self bloat the blockchain?
Do you mean darksend? The way it works, it has a very minimal effect on the blockchain size.

Again, I would implore you NOT to be distracted by these alt-clone marketing suggestions. This is the wrong place to put your attention. Develop the coin & conduct outreach to the media and NOT focusing on the crypto coin miners/traders.
How do we get the media to see us/talk to us/write about us?

You're missing an important thing. Darkcoin is, at a minimum, as anonymous as bitcoin. That's worst case scenario if we say darksend can be cracked. If not, it's more anonymous than bitcoin, probably way more, and only getting better. I think it's a great move from the owners.
|
I'd like to thank eduffield and the other developers for this critically important evolution in virtual currency. DarkCoin is what bitcoin should have been. Some might call it "Bitcoin 2.0" but would do better by saying: "DarkCoin is digital cash." - Child Harold - February 28, 2014 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=421615.msg5424980#msg5424980

Are you talking about denominate? It's just one transaction and it takes your whole wallet and converts the inputs into DarkSend compatible inputs. Say for example you have 123DRK, it would create ONE transaction that allowed you to DarkSend 9 times. Then you would need to run it again when you ran out of compatible inputs. Can that be turned into a button or something? I think it's ... well, more frightening than anything, for a "normal" person to issue commands in the debug console. Also, they'd have to remember the word (I've forgotten it, LOL, had to do a -help and go through the list) a warning could come up if they no longer have their funds properly denominated, and it can just say, please push the denominate button etc...

That homeland security run the armoury? Rofl.. Exactly what I was thinking. Just imagine the logistics. Read the interview... The Silk Road model just can't work with guns. The Armory has to be a front. It's not even close to possible. I've been in the LEGAL weapons business for my whole life. If there were a way to skirt the law on it, I'd do it! I'm all about giving back what the government unjustly takes. But there's no way you can mail guns around and not be detected. Utterly ridiculous. The only people who would bother to try are complete idiots, and people who work for the state so they know it'll get there and they catch the buyer... You think you're hiding a gun on an x-ray? Or the obvious pattern of a box of ammo? STEEL and LEAD show up on X-Rays more than anything you can find! There's not a damn thing you can do to block it or disguise it. There is absolutely no way! I would never even consider doing it because I know it can't work! Guns that are smuggled are done knowingly with people on the inside being paid to look the other way. That's how it's done because it's the only way that has any hope of working. And that costs way more money than I have, and way more money than the prices on that site reflect. It doesn't add up. The only way a illegal arms service like that could work is if they were manufacturing their own designs inside the destination countries, which they are clearly not doing, and openly declare they are not doing. The price points and variety give it away. It can't be real.
