OK...Please Let's end this discussion once and for all. Evan has said that DarkCoin will be open sourced... once Darksend is out of beta. The plan is to be open sourced. I'm am very certain that Mr. Eduffield is aware that this is and will be an on going evolution with many more features to be added with time. I for one am quite confident that Evan and Ape have taken the time to consider the route they wish for this coin. it would far more productive if we could come up with a wish list of additional features that people would think as cutting edge.
Open vs closed source... it has been discussed, and we ended up agreeing, that open sourced when its out of beta was the way to go, so please stop putting fire into this, since it has already been desided.

Sent 50 DRK. Sent without condition, but it would be great if we can try to use messages to keep the bad actors away and point people to using DarkCoin for personal privacy reasons - legitimate reasons to use DarkCoin = mainstream which is where the growth potential is. [/quote] Wow, I can't disagree with this more. Do you really think DRK takes off if you start marketing it and trying to "keep bad actors" away? I'm assuming you think this will take off as a regular currency? Again, i'm going to say it. 1. This succeeds if it's provably anonymous transactions (tested by outside legit hackers) 2. It gets adopted by all with privacy concerns, desire anonymous transactions. Whether you believe it or not, this will ONLY take off and become acceptable if those "bad actors" use this coin to buy their weed or whatever. Anytime someone brings up trying to brand this coin as mainstream and/or figure out how to brand it as not a drug coin. You are being foolish if you think it will become something like other secondary coins (maybe VERT is a good example since you can actually buy stuff with it). Tell me, WHY on earth would i care about anonymous transactions if i wanted to buy Amazon Gift Cards? BTC is still struggling with mainstream adoption (I think acceptance is mostly there, at least people relate BTC to money in some fashion, whether a currency or a scam at least they know what it is). To those who are pushing this marketing thing, I suggest you take a look at the multitude of coins that on some level can be used for transactions and really be honest about how DRK competes with them. Because the main point of the coin DOESN'T MATTER when it comes to mainstream transactions. Market the coin as transaction neutral, skirt around drug transactions by saying its for those who want truly anonymous transactions, but you absolutely should NOT come out against these types of transactions. In all honesty, this coin ONLY succeeds if various subcultures adopt it first. Currencies should be neutral, not political.

I think you guys talk too much about open and closed source and make an "issue" where there is none. Not a single person here believes in closed-source. Furthermore, the dev has already stated that Darksend will be open-source. But right now it is still in Beta stage, a work in progress. Last week it was still in alpha... Give the devs some credit...

All of your marketing $$ should be to find some legit white-hat hackers to test the anonymous features. You should look out for legit, known coin developers (someone known with a connection to BTC would be great).

I'll continue working the wikipedia page -
Also, I'm always looking for new information... Is there a good explanation of how denominate works?
Can you give me the link to the wikipedia page? I'll also need it for the one-page summary thnx. The article is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/DarkCoinwikipedia just declined it until it is more "notable". Essentially this means that we need more talk about it in places other than our own thread Maybe the Wall street Journal?

I've been thinking...
Something just doesn't add up with the Armory using Darkcoin. There is absolutely no way any legit darknet site would use Darksend while it is still closed source.
What am I missing?
You're missing an important thing. Darkcoin is, at a minimum, as anonymous as bitcoin. That's worst case scenario if we say darksend can be cracked. If not, it's more anonymous than bitcoin, probably way more, and only getting better. I think it's a great move from the owners. What you're missing is anything that can inserted into closed source software such as backdoors. You have no idea what's in it because it's closed source. Thus, nobody truly interested in anonymity will ever run it.

Hi guys, I've set up a p2pool for Darkcoin Address: drk.p2phash.com
P2Pool benefits:* No registration required * Distributed hashrate * Immediate payouts after a block is found * Higher payouts with transaction fees paid to miners * No account hack possible Fee: only 0.5% Start mining within seconds! Just point your miner to p2phash.com:7903 and use the Darkcoin address from your wallet for username, the password doesn't matter.

The whole point of the existence of darkcoin is that it's a trustless solution. There are already bitcoin mixing services that use coinjoin. What is the point of making darkcoin when there are already coinjoin services? Because darkcoin is trustless, once it's open sourced. By suggesting it should be closed source is negating the point of darkcoin, requiring trust for a supposedly trustless solution.

I think it's a good thing this isn't open source (yet). Otherwise there would be lots of copy coins. Wait till DRK gets more support and make it open source is a good thing. Technically DRK is ahead of so many coins. Can't wait till the moment others realize this (so I can get rich )

Ah fuck it. Dark coin should be Voyeur sourced. That way if you want to take a look at the code, you have to be cheeky about it.

No reason to keep it closed source even for a second after the project is finished. The open-source community would just leave instantly. Why do you even suggest to keep it closed for a while after its finished? That wouldn't count as a feature in the eye of this community as a whole.

I understand keeping the alpha closed source on a test-net but bitcoind has been in beta since 2009. So how long is darksend going to be in 'beta'?

Based on all the info I have - not much longer at all - a few weeks at most I would think. Anyone in the "know" care to comment? (since I've offered my opinion based on reading this thread only)

I'd definitely be in favour of a large portion of funds going towards this kind of thing.

Official fundraiser for Darkcoin marketing & branding
Since Darkcoin was 0% premined, we will be doing this the old fashioned way, with a fundraiser. Many people in the community have expressed an interest in pushing our marketing effort along. We wanted to make sure the time was right, while Evan sorted out the kinks in the Darksend code. But we are nearly ready to show Darkcoin and Darksend to the world, so let's get this moving.
I will release a list of bounties for marketing & branding in the next day or so when I have a bit of spare time. For now, you may donate to the official fundraising wallet (anonymously if you like!). You can also PM me with your donation details and I'll keep some accounting, if only for the sake of making sure your donation is accounted for and spent appropriately.
As always, you are a fantastic community and we appreciate your support!
