I updated well over a week ago, I'm thinking it was mining pools that hadn't updated yet that caused the fork.

once it's full POSv we wont have to worry about that at all

Agreed that it was likely the mining pools, but that doesn't explain how bitt, cryptsy and polo all got attached to the wrong chain. Was someone running an old node that somehow overrode the new chain?

He is saying to code in dropping connections at the daemon/wallet to previous versions. It is a smart suggestion. My deamons/wallets still have some connections to older versions and the potential for a fork is there because of it.

It is definitely worth considering, but you would have to base it on time and date of when it would go into affect, you couldn't just force all other nodes offline until the POSv kicks in, that doesn't give any leeway or time for the transition to happen gracefully, you will end up with 1million posts about the potchain being broken and other fud.

This procedure forces them to upgrade to the approved software and protects the security of the network by having the same consensus. Everyone's coins are safe and whatnot, this should be standard code. If it gets into one popular codebase, all the clones will get it too.

They don't 'have' to block old versions. They should 100% because when I sync a new wallet from block 0, and my first peer (or a majority) is old software, guess what? I have a high chance of getting on the wrong chain.
