I've built my first mining rig made with 4x 390x and 2x 280x. I've plugged in one 390x via a 16x - 16x riser, and plugged in both 280x via 1x - 16x USB riser. But, Windows 7 doesn't recognize either of the 280x's. Neither do they light up or seem to power on when I start the rig up (unlike the 390x of course). In the device manager, I see an entry called "Other devices", and listed under that is "Unknown Device". I'm wondering if that is my 280x gpus. Does anyone know, do I need a special driver to be installed in order to power/use a gpu connected via 1x - 16x risers? Any help would be great, I really want to get this thing hashing Thanks!

This is the MB I bought for the rig: http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/H81%20Pro%20BTC/Think it needs jumper on the pci slots like shown? If so, will any copper wire do? I don't have spare telephone wires or anything to make use of...would have to go buy some wire to make the jumper.

NO it does NOT..
I run a bunch of them with 5 GPU's each with no problems using USB 1x to 1x Risers. You only need to plug in 1 GPU to the monitor so you can see what's going on. After it's all set and automated, no need to plug anything in. Use a remote desktop software like teamviewer or gotopc, etc...
Make sure you're using a GOOD power supply and plug in the MOLEX cable into the Mobo.

I use platinum power supply as my power consumption is very high for each rig. So save some electricity.

I found somewhere that win 7 only allow only 4 cards at same time, win 8 allow 5 cards. I wonder if someone knows the way to make win 7 work with more than 4 cards. I didn't make it work. One was always unrecognised.

One was always unrecognised. If you can disable any of the monitor out puts on your card then in theory you should be able to run more. Some cards have software them let you turn off the outputs. Some have extra pins so you can turn them off. Short of that, there might be a command in the registry that lets you decide how the GPU's are timed but I would only look into this if you know what you're doing

I am not convinced of this at all. BTC is stagnant.

I am not convinced of this at all. BTC is stagnant. Yes it is stagnant because it is been accumulated to skyrocket as halving is nearing!

I am not convinced of this at all. BTC is stagnant. Bitcoin is stagnant at the moment. But the price will rise soon because of the halving. It could double.

I just resolved all of my wallet sync issues and have started mining ETH. In your guide your wrote "Spending 24 hours planning is 2-3 ether lost at 100 MH/s. Don't be silly and spend all your time planning." Is your reference to 100 MH/s the pool rate for the miner or is it the client measured rate? I ask because I put a little over 200 MH/s to mining ETH on nanopool and it shows me earning about .3 ETH per day. This appears to be backed up by the deposit I received last night. Also, nanopool is consistently underreporting my hash rate. I understand their calculation is based on shares but they show a 6 hour average rate of about 28 MH/s which is only 14% of my actual hash rate! I have seen pools for other coins pay as low as 80% but 14% seems ridiculously low. What are other people getting?
