"The Altair upgrade takes place on Wednesday 27th October at 10:56:23 UTC

The Merge
We’re all safely back from the Merge Workshop. My ConsenSys homies did a nice write-up of the event, and there’s a write-up from the Ethereum Foundation too.

Coming out of the workshop is the Pithos testnet which is running nicely with various combinations of Eth1 (execution) and Eth2 (consensus) clients. In case you are wondering, a Pithos is another kind of Greek earthenware jar, much like an Amphora, I guess."

The grue lurks in the darkest places of the earth. Its favorite diet is adventurers, but its insatiable appetite is tempered by its fear of light. No grue has ever been seen by the light of day, and few have survived its fearsome jaws to tell the tale.

90% Merge, 10% Bomb
"As promised in the previous update, this one will cover the post-merge Ethereum client architecture in depth. With the progress made during the Amphora Interop event, the specification is now close to final

Before we dive into The Merge, though, a short update on the difficulty bomb!"

Ethereum fees are so high now that it makes Uniswap and all other dex unusable, so I understand why people are making layer2 but we don't need 100 projects making layers.

https://forkast.news/vitalik-buterin-layer-2-future-of-ethereum-scaling/
Layer 2 solutions that have been launched include Polygon Hermez, Loopring, ZKSync, Optimism and Arbitrum One. The current cost to transfer ETH on Polygon Hermez is US$0.25 compared to US$6.84 for Ethereum, Buterin said.

https://cointelegraph.com/news/vitalik-proposes-solution-to-link-certain-layer-two-scaling-projects
The proposal outlines how two protocols using rollups can communicate with each other while maintaining interconnectivity and composability.

New eip-4396 for Proof-of-Stake algorithm
https://github.com/ethereum/EIPs/blob/186f930697148e0eb2b526d9f16b06bf2e4ae605/EIPS/eip-4396.md
https://github.com/ethereum/EIPs/pull/4396
Accounts for block time in the base fee calculation to target a stable throughput by time instead of by block.
"This EIP proposes accounting for time between blocks in the base fee calculation to target a stable throughput by time, instead of by block. Aiming to minimize changes to the calculation, it only introduces a variable block gas target proportional to the block time. The EIP can, in principle, be applied to either a Proof-of-Work or a Proof-of-Stake chain, however the security implications for the Proof-of-Work case remain unexplored."

Layer2 is really neccessary. If we get low gas fee and fast transaction, it will give ETH new impulse for development. But in order to realize all things they have eplanned, they need to build powerfull ecesystem (of corse, it shouldn't include 100 projects).

Yea...
VISA and Mastercard will be using a few chains for USDC by end of the year which include,
SOL, ALGO, Matic and ETH.
I was always curious how VISA could use ETH1 being slow, expensive and with low throughput...
assuming they would use SOL and the others until ETH2 was ready....but why would they use Matic?

I began studying layer 2 ETH tech...and its awesome, it brings ETH1 to the next gen...high throughput, low fees ,near instant send.

i believe we will be seeing USDC and many other stablecoins appearing on Metis (its more than 10x cheaper than Matic and more through/faster)
100% confident VISA/Mastercard will be using Metis for USDC soon aswell.

A lot of upgrades are scheduled for the next year or so.  Possibly the institutional interest in ETH may be holding back until Fees/Scaling issues are solved, and glitches in that process (which are perceived as inevitable) are ironed-out.

Is there any possibility that the fees will decrease after this upgrade? Since the intention is always to improve the system and I believe this is something that lately has been bothering many who use the Ethereum network and made a good part migrate to other blockchains.

As the ETH network demand reaches all time highs, gas fees cannot be expected to decrease any time soon. Even though system improvements are happening and will continue, there is no guarantee they will meet our expectations. Yet, ETH will soon experience the law of supply and demand, resulting in a price increase. This will result in even higher gas prices. Fortunately, we have the option of migrating to another blockchain.

Vitalik shared his thoughts on crypto cities and how blockchain can be used to manage the economy of these cities.
https://vitalik.ca/general/2021/10/31/cities.html
"Blockchains can be very useful in both the more incremental and more radical ideas that were proposed here, even despite the inherently "trusted" nature of a city government."
