People who cant afford a hardware wallet, the best thing they can do is to store there private keys on a piece of paper. Just take a print out on a paper of your paper wallet and dont store it anywhere online.

Until now, I still choose MEW as my wallet and to protect wallet from hackers the method is very easy store your data in a safe place and backup on  flashdisk, other than that, do not click carelessly links because there are several phishing link

if you can't buy a hardware wallet, just download a desktop wallet for each cryptocurrenies in you bag

Good point, for now the best way to store wallet is by hardware token wallet, if is not possible then dedicate a different device for that or your private key on diary/ paper,it is save to some extent.
