http://riecoin.org/: .. In Primecoin there is no practical way of estimating the time before finding a block, moreover difficulty 10.1 is easier than 9.9 making it impossible to estimate how secure the network is.
This is not correct. At diff=9.9, all 10-chains found are counted as blocks. So a 10.x is always more difficult than a 9.x diff. By the way diff a.x is more difficult than a.y f x>y, for any a as expected. Ok, you are right that 10.x is always theoretically more difficult than 9.x. And that it may be possible to estimate the total mining power, but it really is a lot harder, and relies more on practical measurements than in theoretical models. The thing is that the behavior is non-linear and unexpected. And because of the way miners work, in practice it took less time to find a block at 10.1 than it did at 9.9This is because at 9.9 the miners make the sieve looking for chains of length 9 but at difficulty 10.01 they sieve for length 10. At this cirumstances, finding a block when difficulty is 10.01 is really faster than when it is 9.9. If miners were perfect, and knew the exact value at which the sieve for 10 is more effective than the sieve for 9 then it would be different. I don't know that value but it certainly is less than 10. Using existing miners, there exists a pair of values x, y where (for the same mining power) 9.x gives blocks at the same rate than 10.y So, Primecoiners: making the sieve for z + 1 instead of z when the difficulty is z.9 is a good miner optimization: you'll get more blocks per second. But you'll get less shorter chains/s - so it's an optimization for solo but not for pooled mining.

Money on me being at fault, to save memory (make it fit!) I merge two smaller sieves... -- bsunau7
Well at least I won my money back! (my sieve was in error). But I can't thank you all enough for the round about way this has helped me. Thanks! -- bsunau7 Glad to hear it. Pay it forward one of these days by using what you develop to help others learn how to do cool prime stuff and program. :-)

I can now say with absolute certainty, that if I had my current solo miner implementation on launch day, I would have solved the first 576 blocks in under 15 minutes using only 20 Intel E5-2697 v2 CPUs Was the launch really all that fair? I guess we will never know. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=trust;u=151513Ignore this FUD There were people who actually believed that Memorycoin, Protoshares, Primecoin/Datacoin, Maxcoin, etc were GPU resistant. But the minute that you wage something of value against their claims, they run and hide. I wage you 10 BTC that I can easily solve 576 blocks (from the first block) in less than 15 minutes on testnet with the hardware stated above. Are you up for the challenge, or is it time to run and hide like the rest?In the scientific community, people are motivated by knowledge and information is requested on the procedures necessary to verify results. Only after the results cannot be independently verified before a conclusion is reached.

Is your miner publicly available? I can now say with absolute certainty, that if I had my current solo miner implementation on launch day, I would have solved the first 576 blocks in under 15 minutes using only 20 Intel E5-2697 v2 CPUs Was the launch really all that fair? I guess we will never know. The implementations from gatra, dga, and jh00 will be just as fast if they used slightly larger primorials and AVX2 instructions for multiple-precision arithmetic. So in a few weeks from now, the performance advantage from all of the miners should be negligible. I will begin work on an Nvidia GPU (sm_20 - sm_35) version this weekend. Also, I plan on releasing that version in binary format with a small developer's fee if the performance gain against a high-end CPU is significant. Sorry, I do not know how to program AMD GPUs for HPC related to multiple-precision arithmetic (Karatsuba multiplication + Montgomery Reduction).

Yeah, but they don't now. So any chance of making your source or binaries public? The implementations from gatra, dga, and jh00 will be just as fast if they used slightly larger primorials and AVX2 instructions for multiple-precision arithmetic...

I think they'd be better off curating a good list of coins. I'll admit I log into Cryptsy less and less all the time. Everything I own on there has tanked, and the interesting new coins aren't even there. Honestly, I'd be hard pressed to buy anything on Cryptsy anyways because it would require first selling something at a loss.

FWIW, I emailed cryptsy about the glaring omission, and they replied within 15 minutes saying it will be added to the voting list.

Thanks! -- bsunau7 And, in an amusing twist - thanks for making me re-think about my generator approach. I had a silly bug that was causing it to reject a ton of valid candidates during the actual search process. D'oh. Suddenly I'm more of a fan of this approach again.
