Visa Crash Highlights Need for Decentralized Bitcoin-Like Payment Systems

Visa experienced a serious network disruption on 1 June 2018, impacting customers across the entire European Union and Ireland. This failure is the result of Visa being a centralized network and highlights the need for decentralized payment systems like Bitcoin and cryptocurrency in general.
In an official statement regarding the incident, Visa said the outage occurred due to a hardware failure, and that the company fell short of its goal of Visa cards working reliably 24 hours a day 365 days a year. According to The Irish Times, there was a major disruption to businesses throughout Ireland as people suddenly found themselves not able to pay bar tabs and restaurant bills. Panic lines formed at ATMs as people tried to withdraw as much cash as possible.

US Congressman Brad Sherman Asks for Crypto Mining, Trading Ban

During a subcommittee for the House of Representatives Financial Services Committee on Wednesday, California Democrat Brad Sherman boldly declared his belief that all cryptocurrency mining and trades should be banned across the US.
Sherman’s arguably excessive comments went so far as to inaccurately determine the primary use of cryptocurrencies for tax evasion, and even for rogue states to avoid US sanctions, claiming the only way to deal with this must be banning all US citizens from dealing in cryptocurrencies.

Schnorr to Spark Next Vicious Debate For Bitcoin Since SegWit?

Bitcoin’s privacy and scalability problem could end soon once Schnorr signature is adopted by the BTC community.
Still in development, this Bitcoin upgrade proposes standard 64-byte Schnorr signatures over the current signature algorithm. This is one of the earliest discrete log-based signature schemes. It is simple in the way that it offers short signature length and efficiency by allowing pre-computing exponentiations for fast online signature generation. With regards to Bitcoin, Schnorr can clear up blockchain space and resolve transaction logjam by mashing signature data together.

New Zealand Bank Considers DLT to Boost Customer Service

SBS Bank in New Zealand is looking at blockchain and how the technology could impact customer account usability within its banking network.
Local news source The Southland Times has reported that the bank recently discussed both cryptocurrency and blockchain at a recent SBS annual meeting, after which the bank’s group chief executive Shaun Drylie made the following statement:
“We think, and the common consensus is, that it has real merit. Cryptocurrencies, we’re not too sure, and if you look at the volatility of cryptocurrencies that would suggest the market is not too sure as well.”

Japan Internal Affairs Denies Links to Regulator Exchange Inquiry

Japan’s Internal Affairs minister has refuted that she had any involvement in current FSA investigations into cryptocurrency exchanges.
The minister, Seiko Noda, was accused of meddling in investigations which are only authorized to be conducted by the country’s financial watchdog, Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA).
The current investigation is looking at a non-registered Toyko-based cryptocurrency exchange which had previously not responded to the FSA’s requests for future information about the exchanges business activities. It reported that if the company “did not respond by the deadline given, it would report the matter to investigate authorities and take necessary steps”.
