Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

I've been a bit quiet lately lads and lasses. Apologies for that. There have been a lot of administrative tasks going on behind the scenes with the team and I haven't really had a lot of news to share with you. I thought it best to remain silent rather than come on saying 'it's coming soon', or 'we're working on something really big' etc. etc. blah blah.
