I think this decision does not fit the rule of law. A new act cannot be applied to the past. However, I think the rights of the existing Jr. members should have been kept. This decision is really unfair. Ok, I understand the issues such as spamming, multi-accounts etc. The administrators should find other ways to prevent these issues, decreasing ranks is not ethical and will not be a solution. I think the cryptocurrency world has (or had) an ideal defending equality. This type of discrimination is against this ideal, too. I hope the administrators reconsider this decision.

This is great from the man himself. Although I joined this forum not long but getting merits have been a problem. I make sure I make quality posts but seems my posts are not seen by the merit sources. You can check my post and see if I deem some merits. All the same thanks to Sir Theymos. I think this is the time for me to work hard and acquire some good merits.

Congrats, you're now a jr. member as well.

Again; not the highest quality post history but you are active in a variety of threads (not only bounty) since May 2018, so I don't think you should still be a newbie.

To be fair, you've only ever posted in VOLP coin and never anywhere else. That's not really the best way to get merit...be a part of the community, not just your own coin!  Cheesy

I agree with you... This is not a good way to do things...

If anybody has done something that's against the rules, then ok. But this is not fair...

I'm not a bounty whatever, I'm just trying to help a valid project come to life, and since the poster of the ann thread is now a newbie, the project ann thread now starts wit a bunch of url links...

Is that really a good thing?

PS.
I'm not trying to get merit... There are other forums

Based on your account history, you've only made posts for bounty entries since April (5 months) and started participating in other threads since the 12th of September. If you keep that up for a couple of weeks, I'm sure you'll get merits soon enough.

Here you go. I've gone through your post history. You're posts aren't perfect, but it's pretty clear you're a real account with a long post history of on-topic comments.

Crocus mainly posts in Spam Megathreads, and has a fake Bitcoin address in his profile. That's not someone who I would consider worthy of ranking up.

One thing that wasn't mentioned is that some existing merit sources seem to have gotten a source size increase as well, so there should be much more merit flowing.

This is absolutely right thing to increase merit. I am very sad for demote newbie.

This will not change things for the better... Not all newbies are spamers. And they can spam now as they did before.

How will a newbie create an announcement post, a serious one, without pictures in it???
Oh, I think it will.  And even if it doesn't, the screams of agony are sweet music to my ears.  Having said that, Theymos wants merit sources to be liberal handing out merits to newbies, so I don't think this problem is going to be as bad as everyone thinks.  For some it definitely IS going to be hell, but what do you expect?  Most new accounts don't contribute anything worthwhile, and that's a solid fact.

As far as the pictures go, buying a copper membership would solve that problem.  Theymos wrote about that in the OP.

I am very sad for demote newbie.
Well step it up, then.  With all the posts you've made, there's no excuse not to have earned at least 1 merit.  That's the whole point of the change.

That's the right decision. Finally, multi-million army of bots and multi-accounts will disappear. I'm for fair play. Also, this will lead to a decrease in spam and the appearance of better content on the forum.

Buying merit or normal ranks is like buying yourself a bunch of trophies to put on your shelf. It's stupid, and it's an insult to everyone who achieved it legitimately. I can't see ever doing that. I don't particularly mind letting people pay for some of the privileges of these things, such as with copper membership, but it should be a parallel system.

Copper membership is good. Now, if you want to participate in signature campaigns, you can either pay the $10-$20 for copper membership or accomplish the herculean task of making one good post. I don't think that it's unreasonable in either case.

If people are making good posts but are still struggling to get merit, then that's a problem with the merit system and should be fixed on my end. Demanding money in order to bypass a broken system would be really bad. But AFAICT the merit system actually is reasonably effective at identifying good posters.

Perfectly explained, all the changes since merit system was implemented is a good decision of the BitcoinTalk team it has a clear purpose.

1. First of all due to greediness of most members to get higher ranks without inserting effort to contribute to the community by posting quality contents. Earlier today I searched for a thread on How to be a Campaign Bounty Manager and there are few results found. The thread on how to become a bounty manager opened up my mind and saw an important thing to do to reach the position or to get that position.

The interaction and the thread itself helps me learn a lot of thing to do to level up from being an ordinary member and step up to higher level its a step by step process and it is related to the new system implemented by the Admins.

2. Second, I highly agree with the system implemented to eliminate all the useless thread as well as comments that are low quality. I admit that from the past activities of mine there are times that I posted low quality and that's because I wanted to qualify for the signature campaign required but it is not worth it due to laziness posting without reading the whole thread which turns the topic into irrelevant.

I am looking forward to see clean BitcoinTalk forum as a result of this new system. I want to see more quality posts that will help me grow and improve my knowledge & skills.

There's no need to buy merits to increase ranks all members need focus, sincerety and quality contribution in this case we have a give and take system, we learn while we increase our rank.

On my part as Member rank though sometimes I felt upset when posting quality contents and not notice by anyone. Now I'm glad to know that there are more ways to get merits I now have more hope to increase my present rank.

Well i will say that it's a good news and also a bad news why is it a good news because before users don't look up to merit aword all the look up is just doing signature but now i think we all need to settle down and buy some merit with our brain by posting a meaningful post which will also make us understand more about BTT.

Very Welcome move.  Interesting to see Jr. Member demoted to newbie.
If spam continues, I think in future Theymos might demote Members too (raising limit to 50) or decaying default merits in gradual phase.
Anyways, it give a important message of stop spamming.

Nope sir as you know in my bounty the manager wants to put that address in my account and that is the rules in our bounty and that is mandatory to be eligible in bounty but I will remove that when the bounty is finished.

@theymos, it is great to hear from you with this change which will surely result in a huge reduction of spam. We need to mention @hilariousetc for his/her contribution and the impact he/she put up on the theymos for initiating this new requirement.

Now I see this thread itself becoming a merit source thread where all the newbies trying to post here to get their first merit. I have a mixed feeling about that scenario because I don't want to see this thread is ultimately becoming a SMT where filled with newbies requests. Meanwhile, its good to see other members giving away their sMerits for the Newbies who really deserved to be ranked up.

Edit - "Very good move theymos give me merits" - Newbie Grin

I have a suggestion, do we need to discuss those new requirements what theymos already been implemented. Because he is the boss admin and I don't see any requirement to continue this conversation since anyone here cannot change anything(There is nothing to be changed either, @theymos hit the nail on the head). It's okay to discuss any restrictions or requirements before its implementation and take other members opinions regarding the best possible way of implementation (If theymos felt that matter to be discussed before implementation).

@theymos

After reading the changes for the second time, I would like to suggest this.
The users/posters should also be able to rank up without merit. But it should need a certain number of merit to use a signature that corresponds to the achieved rank.
Users already can rank up from "Brand new" to "Newbie" without any merits Grin. Oops.. if you are talking about ranking from "Newbie" to "Jr. Member" I don't think that's a good idea and we don't need to go backwards. Why are we allowing users to ranked up just by wasting time in the forum? Merit system also needs some tweaks but the answer is not implementing the activity system again which has been failed. The forum is a much better place if theymos introduced Merit system earlier than its initial introduction.

Quote
Why:
1. Because the temptation to make money with signatures is in my opinion the main reason for the spam.
I also somewhat agreed with you but why only signatures we also need to consider bounty reports which also attributes heavily towards spam.

Quote
2. Newbies have a hard time getting noticed. I find myself not even reading post of newbies because I think it's all about raking up.
Dear Legendary @vlom, don't think in that way and spare few minutes of your time for newbies too. Because I have seen those good newbies still missed their first merit even they deserved it, unfortunately, some of the members didn't have sMerits to spend.

Why does the Jr. Member need 1 merit? This will not stop the farm and it is also economically profitable and pays off by any campaign. You can make 3 or 5 merits per Jr. Member. I already see how the newbie buy themselves 1 merit. And I've seen reports where a person owned 400-500 Jr. Member Undecided

In general, I support, both in terms of combating spam on the forum, and what happens in the signatures. I have often seen how farms enter the signature, when in a short time 10 Jr. Member are registered. Perhaps we will wait for the fate in the relationship and the account Member (members-farms also quite a lot)
