All Jr Members are now demoted to newbie= More visitors into meta. Lol.
It would be better if Jr Member requires 5 merits. Having 1 merit is really easy task. Also, it will increase the abuse a little more.

1 merit is not a big deal they always can buy it.
They don't need to buy, they already have 100 of account. They can easily distribute 1,1,1,1...... which will also not be suspicious merit abusing.
True Indeed. But I hope day by day New rules will come to prevent Account farmers. It is not an easy task to catch all account farmers in a day or by a rule!

I think this is an interesting revolution with a good purpose for mutual comfort in this great forum. I strongly agree to eradicate disruptive spam and cheat on trash activities in this group.

Even though my ranking is now from Jr. Member down to being a Newbie again, I still support this great Revolution.

Keep the spirit of Newbie!
Keep working to give the best!!!

Hopefully with the new regulations such as these, the potential shitposter can be reduced. And for Jr. Member suffered a drop in rank keep the spirit, and do not get tired to make a post/thread quality, that can take quick Rank again.

Hopefully there are considerations behind and become the spirit grabbed with the exertion of its own. And I would also keep TRYING despite all difficult or very difficult to move forward. Come along to our friends and struggling. thanks to the SENIOR support and advice.

I like the change myself even though my account is demoted back. What is a bit off when I think about it, is that copper membership is so cheap and gives you a member rank.

This means that for such a small amount of money/investment you get a chance to participate in bounty and get much higher stakes then some Junior member that had quality posts and has 9 merit for example.

To me that looks a bit unfair giving some people that are willing to spend money like that.

This won't be issue if bounty managers would calculate ranks based only on merit, so all copper members with no merit don't get advantage over good Junior members.

This forum is really challenging now, and this is actually good so those who are just posting to make money here will be lessen. I just hope that everyone will get merit based on their quality and not just because they know each other.

The giving of merit still seems to be discretionary, and likely members are going to give merits based on knowing the other person (through posts), and you become known by providing good posts, no?

Also is there anyway to help us receive merit?

One good way is for you to attempt to help yourself by attempting to provide good post contents.

I mean, why not change the setting that if you don't spend your smerit you will be punished for something. Because as I can see, merit system are not circulating and people already lose it.

You are talking about a merit decay system, and theymos seems to be disinclined towards merit decay for regular members - however, the source merit by merit sources will decay every 30 days if it is NOT used.

It seems to me that theymos has provided the right balance in regards to not implementing merit decay for regular members; however, there could be some  way to implement incentives for regular members to spend their merits (perhaps?), and that would be a carrot approach rather than a stick approach - yet I am not sure whether that carrot approach is necessary, either, especially given that theymos is continuing to tweak the number of merit sources upwards, both in terms of source members and the total number of smerits within their 30 day distributions  - so time will tell whether more merit tweaks might be needed in the future, and if so, the kind of tweaks that would help improve the reaching of forum objectives (facilitating quality substantive posts).

In addition to this, can you also set some replenishment of merit at least every year? So everyone can still give merit?

Surely, your replenishment of merits proposal would likely go against the current direction of the forum - in terms of attempting to diminish merit abuse, especially from farmed accounts and obvious disingenuous accounts, such as trolls, shills, spammers and scammers.  Your proposal of yearly replenishment would come close to turning every member into a merit source - which seems to go far beyond what is currently being strived for.

1) Self-Custody is a right.  There is no such thing as "non-custodial" or "un-hosted."  2) ESG, KYC & AML are attack-vectors on Bitcoin to be avoided or minimized.  3) How much alt (shit)coin diversification is necessary? if you are into Bitcoin, then 0%......if you cannot control your gambling, then perhaps limit your alt(shit)coin exposure to less than 10% of your bitcoin size...Put BTC here: bc1q49wt0ddnj07wzzp6z7affw9ven7fztyhevqu9k

A Copper Member cost is :

-Copper - 0.00208333 BTC

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=credit;promote

Thank you

So knowing human greed selling that 1 merit for 0.0010 will happen from time to time.

Thermyos sent me a pm told me list is well over 1000 people.

I am willing to look at list and read posts from now until dec 24th.

I will come back here and update.
I will not give merit to anyone that asks for merit.

Good to hear that you like to learn. No one prohibit you from joining bounty, the new rule is just for reduce garbage-posting, it is not targeted at any individual or bounty hunters at all.

My concern with the merit system is that I don't think it necessarily identifies "good" posters, but rather identifies posters whose opinions align with those who are considering awarding merit to a particular post.

Let me guess, no proof, just a "concern"? Many known merit sources have expressed completely different concerns - how to find meritorious posts, how to spread merits fairly, etc. Info about sent merits is publicly available. Please analyze it and show us if what you're saying is really happening or if you're projecting again.

I currently have received more merit than everyone in the forum except for 218 people, and I have not received sufficient merit to achieve Senior Member status, but am a Legendary member only because I was grandfathered in. However I have pretty much always been able to obtain above market rates for signature deals (even after receiving negative trust) when I have been active and been trying to actively sell my signature. Surely there are more than 220 people who make sufficiently good posts to be a Senior Member.

You conveniently forgot the time component. 200 merits since January is roughly on pace with activity. You have no reason to complain.

There is no such thing as "sufficiently good posts to be a Senior Member". You can (but you're not guaranteed to) earn merits if you make good posts. Stop subverting this extremely simple concept into your account-farming POV.

So, potentially, you are in agreement with 2weent6 that there might be a kind of widespread abuse of merits given to friends instead of quality of posts?

Maybe you are talking about sources rather than regular members?  And, I would think that it would be difficult to find farmed account kind of abuses that give small number of merits spread out; however, it might be easier to find merit abuses if you starting out with members giving larger quantity of merits, and perhaps patterns can be found, even though I still wonder how systemic of a problem that could be, unless sources were engaged in such an abuse of merit behavior?

I'm about to quote the post to view the image but you are way faster than me. Well, I thought the image contain something special. So lucky I didn't quote it  Grin

Pls can anyone tell me how I can be getting merit on this forum?
Post something useful. No one will give you Merit if you keep posting shits like twitbook links and etc. just like this one..
What a great project with great future
Did you even know that we are working on reporting users who posts like this? By looking at your posts history you have no difference from users I've reported lately.
.... I suggest the merit needed for a junior member to move to member should be reduced to 5. The 10 merits is quite high to come by easily and besides people hardly award merit. So please try and take my suggestion into consideration.
No! It is way much better if the required merits to rank up to Member stays 10 or higher. It is not too hard to achieve 10 Merits if you were posting valuable posts and not twitbook spam links. It is YOU who makes it impossible to receive Merits.

Day by day bitcointalk.org Forum becoming more stable and secure... For extra flexibility, security forum admin changes its rules... Such kind of rule is Merit system. Merit system reduces the scamming activities, more scammers involve themselves in unfit garbages Post which make forum badly.By newbie restrictions and requirements rule by theymos will reduce scamming, cheating. As a result forum will be more stable, secure and safety. I deeply support this moderation.. I salute the perfect man ''Theymos"

I am also being demoted and it's quite disappointing too, However I believe new rules can create a long term positive impact on the forum. Previously it's quite easy to get promote into Jr. Member position but now newbies actually needs to contribute to the forum to earn their rank. Only concern of mine is how often senior members or higher ranking members pay attention to newbies contributions for reward them.

Too many rules, in the future new users would would not register here instead to a new bitcoin forum. This crazy rules alienates new users that is possible bitcoin adopters. I've seen bigger forums than bitcointalk that is properly run and maintained without resulting to such rules.
