Confirmed. S2 = Definitely overpriced. 5 BTC is the real value consensus.

Batch 2 hasn't sold out yet and its been a good 8 hrs already

noted, i didn't realise they had added batch 2 - a few hundred $cheaper isn't a big discount, considering.

I think that bitmain should make an "S1.2" with 200gh/200watt

yeah or if they can't do 200gh 200 watt with 64 chips

  how about   125 hash/125 watt ?

btw if you have the correct skills the current models could be modded to get close to 1 watt per hash.

you can put a lower freq to underclock

it is then just a matter of lower volts to the chip.  I can fit more then 1 dozen in my garage  maybe 15.

I am annoyed that I am getting stuck with a psu if I buy one of the s-2's.

Is it possible that 1000W PSU draws only 1000W from the wall?

Yes, it is. As there are some safe margin when we chose the PSU.  The Enermax is not running at its full capacity.

How should we chose from S1 and S2?

  • When the infrastructure will be ready?
If your infrastructure has to wait for another two weeks to be ready, I think S2 will be better.

  • What is the most scare resource in your mining operation? Capital or the infrastructure ( Energy, cooling system, etc)
For some miners, they are not lack of money to have the hash rate they want, but they don't have enough room, electricity supply for S1. A enterprise level miner might have spent 100k USD and more than one month to build a hosting farm, but if they want to maximum the hash rate, they should chose S2

  • Do you have enough PSU units?
Sometimes, buying a PSU is hard. S2 will be better.

  • Does your electricity cost low or high?
We know that there are some area and opportunities to have ultra low price electricity, however, it is not the case for everyone. If your electricity price is not low, S2 will pay off in the long run.

They say they are using a 14U rack... But those photos on page one look smaller than a normal 14u rack.

The PROTOTYPE is not 14U in size, but is also not 4U. I would guess about 6U (6U = 266.7mm). Lookng at the prototype, its roughly the hieght of 2x120mm fans).

I assume they will make everything more compact and visually appealing by the time they ship 4U size in april

24" PCI-E cables with 16AWG wires and stripped ends - great for server PSU mods, best prices https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=563461

Agreed, this is overpriced.  We're moving into the phase of just buying BTC outright until more efficient tech arrives...  buying 6 BTC makes more sense.

I'm pretty sure it is also undervolted so you won't be able to overclock that much (possibly some).

I feel that Bitmain is skimping on the PSU.  Assuming that they're using Enermax ERV1000EWT-G 80 Plus Gold which is approximately 90% efficient at around full load (996W or 83A total on the 12V rail), the S2 would be drawing around 900WDC (1000WAC at the wall*90%) from this PSU.  That's a 90% (900W/996W) continuous load 24/7.  That's too close for comfort.  A 1200W PSU (75% load) would be more appropriate.  Personally, I prefer a 1500W PSU (60% load) for the S2; much closer to peak efficiency which is at 50% load.

Bitmain should offer an option to sell the S2 without a power supply at an appropriately reduced price so we could supply our own PSU just like with the S1s or get rid of the relatively puny 1000-Watter and use at least a 1200W premium PSU.  The cost difference for them shouldn't be that much especially when purchased in bulk.
