I think it is asked to much from only one player to carry his whole team to another level if he only gets little or even no support at all from his teammates. I also don't think that Messi ever was that kind of player that would motivate his team or wake them up when their performance was bad, that was the job of players like Xavi, Busquets or Iniesta.
