Even if they prepare well, with the same roster it's unlikely that they can defend the championship. We need a good center like Kai, that's one thing, and more active players like Brownlee if we want to compete with the stronger teams. We can't expect our PBA players alone to beat those giants, we're just fooling ourselves if we believe that.
Hopefully after that big slap in the face, they will realize how much our opponents have improved while we seem to be going the opposite direction.
That tournament just showed 2 things to our basketball team.
1. Our team is becoming weaker and weaker.
2. Other countries' team are becoming stronger and stronger.
Preparing well is good, but like what you said, preparing well doesn't mean you'll win a title if you have a mediocre roster to defend the title. I want to say that we need Kai, but I don't think that he wants to play in this tournament, or I don't think that the SBP will try and get him. We need better players to represent our national team. I still believe that we have the players to compete for the highest stage on Asia. It's just that for whatever reason it is, SBP isn't building one that could compete against the likes of China, Japan or even Korea.
This tournament happens once every 4 years, and for sure many changes will happen throughout those 4 years. I wonder how will SBP prepare for the next Asian Games after that disappointing exit.
