but China's defeat in the bronze medal game is likely to be even more disappointing because many are expecting for them to be on top... I'd love to watch how both teams react from this point on, especially in the expectations they will carry into the next tournament.
Maybe China was too complacent about their opponent, or maybe they lost the hunger to win after losing to Japan. They were probably too overconfident that they could still get a medal since they had been very dominant, especially with their height advantage, and then came that surprise. China is still a giant in this tournament since they still got the most medals overall, but basketball is one of the biggest sports they should have won. Not even getting the bronze medal is really disappointing for them.

--- It's sad to see that we did not even get a medal considering we were the defending champions, but even sadder for China since they also lost the bronze medal game. I wonder how they will react to that, pretty sure there will be a lot of pressure on their coach once they get back home.
It's sad I agree, but if you will put some mediocre and average players, what do you expect? No offense because I agree that some of the players who played are playing well in the PBA, but if you'll compare them with other players on other countries, they're nothing, and we just saw it on this tournament. It hurts, but that's the reality. Our basketball team is regressing, not upgrading. Japan and South Korea are the 2 countries that we are defeating back in the days. It's more than a decade ago when our old Gilas Pilipinas teams are defeating these 2 countries, but look at where they at right now. That's what we call as "upgrading". Our team isn't, and that's what we just saw. Well anyway, it's over already, and I guess the thing that we should focus now is the upcoming FIBA World Cup qualifiers which will happen in November. Our team needs 5-6 wins to secure that 3rd spot, and with 2 wins against Syria almost guaranteed, we're already at 4 wins. One win against either Iran or Jordan will puts us in the 3rd seed, but winning all the remaining 4 games secures it.

Or maybe we can just say that we lacked players, because the last time the team played with Kai, we beat strong teams like Jordan and Iran. It's just that some of our best players were not sent, so we really cannot expect too much.
That's alright, if SBP will not invest much in this tournament, then let's just hope that our best players will continue to give us good entertainment every time they play because they have a better chance of winning. It seems like they are more focused on FIBA competitions than other tournaments, since FIBA is our ticket to the World Cup if we get lucky again.

The lack of players, for sure, is a huge thing. Team dynamics were also where Kai shines, something like chemistry with Dwight and Brownlee, because they can create plays and take away some of the pressure from Kai. Imagine if we could make them play together for Gilas. I mean, it is expected for SBP to not prioritize this in some of the tournaments, lets just hope for good players to still make a decent game. FIBA, for sure, is going to be where most of the budget is going; that is where, for sure, a strong lineup can show up. I mean, at least we are going to expect priority on FIBA competitions; hopefully we can see a good line up, for sure there obvious goal is World Cup qualifications. Let's see on November.

Looking at the performance done by the main team, we can say that we are not lacking of players. But it happens that they have their own commitments with their mother teams. then this is the reason why cannot commit. KBL and Japan B. League only allows their player to play only on FIBA sanction games. That's why most of main players playing overseas is not been required to play on Asian games. So in that case SBP don't really have a choice but to get new players to play and represent our country.

We cant blame the young talents to go abroad, Afterall it is still a business matter when it comes to basketball and the PBA is not giving enough salary for the superstars. Its time to start a new salary bracket in our local league and take care our young talents. well this i not new in our country in all sports. Those players in oher country will go back to pH and play in PBA after their prime.

Exactly, and the guys playing there are making much bigger salaries compared to the PBA, so of course they will think about securing their future. This sport is not really about loyalty because once you are no longer useful to the team, they can simply choose not to sign you anymore. So players also have to be smart. If you can make 5x more playing overseas compared to what you earn in the PBA, then it's really a no-brainer to choose the bigger salary. This one pays the biggest. (KBL) [Professional Basketball] Minimum salary of 42 million won, total foreign players raised to 1 million dollarswe have Arvin Tolentino and William Navarro there.

I don't know much about Navarro, but Arvin Tolentino is the star player of NorthPort. In Gilas though, even if he is part of the roster, he is barely used. So even if he is making around 10 million per season overseas, that is already big compared to the PBA. While he is still young, I think it's just right for him to try playing overseas. But what about those rules the PBA has? I remember hearing before that a player could be banned for 2 or 3 years if he plays overseas and then wants to come back to the PBA.

Yes, according to the news, it's a 3-year ban, but this is only for players who already played in the PBA, were offered a contract renewal, but decided not to renew and play overseas instead. It does not apply to players who haven't played in the PBA before going overseas, so players like Kai Sotto are exempt from this rule. Seems like the PBA is already getting desperate, they want to control the players, but good thing if they don't want to return to the PBA, there is still MPBL.

Those young players with potential talent will of course go for the big money. They can earn in just one year what would be earn in three years if they play in the PBA. But of course there are advantages and disadvantages of playing overseas and one of the disadvantage is that you will be away from your family for a long time as you will be alone in a foreign country just like an OFW. The PBA has already acknowledge this problem but refuses to address because like you said this is business and if they will raise the salary cap of their team they might loss money so better have this way, retain all the players as those playing overseas will go back to the PBA sooner or later as they will grow old and might not sign a contract anymore on the mother team.

The move of PBA is too preevent the star players on signing to other country and leave their mother team. This is for me good move TO PREVENT! but we all know that sallary is one of the biggest problem. another one problem is the sister companies or big corporations that tanking their teams aand leaving the independent weaker. this should fix soon. I have an IDEA on this. no more sister company, and shuffle all players. all team can get 3 of their current roster and the rest will be on the pool. drafting and make a team. This will encourage more new owners to enter PBA, this will make more competitive, team now offer higher salary. im wating for KAI, Ramos and KQ to enter PBA.

At this point in their career? I don't think so. Maybe they will if they are past their prime and have no offers overseas. But as long as there are offers, we won't see these guys playing in the PBA yet. If I were them, I'd do the same. Who wouldn't want a higher salary, better treatment, etc.? The only thing our local league can offer is the under-the-table money, which I guess is even bigger than their actual contract. Inside, there is also politics. Favoritism is also a problem there. Even if you can still play, it's either you won't get any contract again or they will just bench you if they don't want you anymore.

Lacked players = lacked of development, and it's a fail if you will ask me therefore, proving what I'm saying that basketball here in our country is slowly regressing, not upgrading just like other countries out there like South Korea and Japan. Well, I guess SBP is conserving funds for the upcoming FIBA World Cup, eh? They're saving money just so that they can pay other players? Maybe they could get Clarkson when we qualify for the World Cup then? I agree with what you said though that they're more focused on FIBA right now and they have a higher chance of qualifying already. Automatic 2 wins against Syria, a potential win against Iran, and Jordan doesn't have their big man in Al-Dwairi which increases our chance of winning to them as well. TBH, if the best-of-the-best players will play on the remaining 2 windows, I will not be surprised if we will end the tournament with a perfect 6-0 record.

Some teams might still want them as they are popular but it could deprived young players that will fill-up the slots instead of them. Politics in the PBA is very worst. If they don't like the players anymore or just say don't follow their wishes, they will just boycott them silently just like what happened to Greg Slaughter and Terrence Romeo. These two players are still capable of playing for more years but they were left out in the sidelines as if they were not there.

The silent ban in the PBA is true, it's in accordance with each team. They mostly don't talk about it but that's really happening when the league and management itself doesn't like the players anymore. We see players like Kelly Williams even if they've counted a lot of years and became old, they still allow them to play and give contract. And for these young talents who are playing abroad in Japan and South Korea, I think if no offers anymore at their 30s, they'll apply for the PBA and teams would like to have them and will have under the table contracts.

Greg problem before is the amount of salary he wants, I did not expect that teams will let him go out. He is one of the tall guy that can take the bump of junmar. Terrence attitude is one of the problem but his talent is really supreme. He is one of the best and yes, that silent banning is very political move for the PBA. A bad shadow for all players. But they have choices now, they can go outside of the country. Corporation is messing the league and it should be destroyed. I am more excited for the future of MPBL. Ths one will go bigger and bigger.

The MPBL imo will just be an option for players who can't take their overseas and in the PBA but other than that i think they won't grow. We have MBA (Metropolitan Basketball Association) which was very hype at the start because of potential to compete with the PBA but the lack of financial support kills the idea. Logistics are too much for those teams to sustained that MBA only able to operate just 3 seasons if i'm not wrong. ------------ Back to the PBA, Ginebra has a new import when the games resume, his name is Jordan Murphy. So this means that we can't see Justine Brownlee playing for the Gin Kings this conference as he allegedly gone unresponsive to call's from Ginebra. Do this means that Justine Brownlee might be done for good playing for the Philippines?

His record is not that bad, https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/murphjo02.htmlAnd he is still young, 29 years old, so maybe coach Tim sees his potential to lead the team, let's see. So this means that we can't see Justine Brownlee playing for the Gin Kings this conference as he allegedly gone unresponsive to call's from Ginebra. Most likely, since this is already a replacement import. But since there is no rule in the PBA that limits a team to only one replacement, there is still a possibility. Still, since we have no update yet on Brownlee's health, I guess we should not expect too much anymore.

It's a serious injury that could lead him to retirement. Justin Brownlee’s future with Ginebra remains uncertainSo for now, let's not talk much about him as he did not even represent the team in Asian games, so his injury is probably not healing yet. And he is not getting any younger as well, serious injuries could possibly result to end of his career.

It means that this is serious as JB is not on his young age and the injury he is carrying is been with him for a long time. He decided to play before with Ginkings even he feels not 100%. Maybe it firesback now whch really need a long time to heal or might end his career if he will push himself far. So, lets wait for that. Ginkings is a bit lucky as they will have a long period of time to engage with the new import and might build a better chemistry and play.
