History of local boards

From this: Bitcointalk's historical important changes, then coupable discussed and asked for a new section for information on local boards as important changes of the bitcointalk.org forum. It is what I am not going to.

Personally, I have some reasons to reject a new section in that thread. Local boards are important components of the forum, obviously, but each local boards have different level of importance in the forum. Summarise all of local boards as one of important changes of the forum is likely irrelevant.

Today, I created the thread, in which I will give you some details on the history of all local boards. It is acceptable if I make mistakes in details or miss some local boards. You are definitely have more understandings on you local boards. If you find any of such mistakes or missed local boards, please help me. I appreciated all of your contributions to improve the thread.

I ranked the status of each local board based on their ranks presented here


Notes:

• Birthday: by default, it is the date on which the first post of each local board published.
• Request on local moderator(s) from theymos: Like that one, see. If you know such requests from theymos in your boards, please let me know.
• A. birthday (Adjusted birthday): recommended by knowledgeable members of each local boards and can be shortly before or after default birthday. It is the day on which locals asked for creation of their local boards. Click on each adjusted birthday to see more details.

It is your favorite local board, not mine, so if you know something interesting, please let me know.

For local boards in the main languages section

I made new variables for the rates of new posts (npost_daily) and new topics (ntopic_daily) per day for each local boards. Then sorting them out descendingly for each variable. I allocated local boards corressponding ranks (rankpost - according to descending orders of npost_daily; and ranktopic - according to descending orders of ntopic_daily).

Total days in between the birthdays of local boards and today calculated.

In the below list, I sorted all local boards out descendingly, according to rankpost that calculated from npost_daily.

Based on the criteria, the top 5 active local boards are:

• Russian: 1505 posts/day
• Indonesian: 545 posts/day
• Turkish: 376 posts/day
• Chinese: 213 posts/day
• Pilipinas: 174 posts/day

There are two sets of criteria but I would like to choose the rankpost. There is no reasons for now to combine two criteria sets.

Great post, mate. This post is like the current data (information) of all local boards on bitcointalk. And I am glad to see my local board become one of the top ones based on the number of "npost" / the most active local boards. Anyway, I don't see how many members are involved in each local board. It will be interesting to know if you can add the information.

I am surprised to know that there are some local boards having no moderators. How to handle spam posts there? Report to........?

AFAIK, some moderators or global moderators handle some boards, simultaneously.

Local boards are an area of potential great growth. My local board, Spanish, is clearly underused in relation to the world population that speaks the language, and currently shows a great gap between current posting activity, and potential posting activity. There are other factors to weigh-in such as wealth, culture, technological settlement, and so forth, but the gap is pretty wide, and I do hope it eventually boosts (maybe SEO can help).
 
Just a additions to the data reflected in the OP:

- The Birthday of the Local Boards I think are, in some instances, that of a prior Language Thread. For example, the Spanish Local board figures as the oldest, born on the 24/09/2010, but it was really constituted as a local board on the 19/05/2011 (see Please create a Local/Castellano (Spanish) forum). This is just a technicality that I found to be true for my local board, albeit an important one for the board itself.

- Dealing with averages has it’s particularities. The longer the period of time, the more data points we flatten out into a single value, losing some perspective as to evolution of the values. Dealing with posts count numbers is a bit of a p.i.t.a., and at some point, I decided to follow these values for local board (not local threads) on a monthly basis, in order to get a better reading of post count evolution, and specially on it’s distribution over main+first level childboards (i.e. in order to separate Altcoin stuff from the rest).

For example, the Russian local board is currently generating just over 20k posts per month:

The Russian postcount, for example, differs from the overall average quite a bit (just under 700 new net(*) posts per day last month vs 1504 all time average). Altcoin now represents there around 7,88% of newly created posts, whilst on January 2018 it was 46,76%. It’s interesting to play around with the data (alas, manually retrieved each month), and retrieve information in the process.

I forgot to add some more notes, in particular the pre-history of the first post in your local board (Spanish).
I left some notes previously but now it is time to edit OP with more notes to make it more understandable, and easily get more helps.

I know but for such a cross-sectional data (like the thread in initial version), the averages are all I can do for now. 

It’s interesting to play around with the data (alas, manually retrieved each month), and retrieve information in the process.

I agreed and I am going to observe and publish more data on monthly basis.

I am not the official historian of the french section . I'm far from knowing everything, but I did a little research and I didn't find a topic asking for the creation of the french sub-section.

But in the Staff section, I found a message, from June 2011, from the french mod at this time asking for new sections to be added.
So the anniversary date of the creation of the french section is somewhere in the first half of the year 2011.

I would like to shed some light on the early days of the history of Indian local board.

For quite some time from 2010, there was somewhat moderate activity of Indians in this forum. But since they didn't have a forum, they were discussing about the Indian bitcoin stuffs in Bitcoin Discussion and the transactions of Indian Rupee to Bitcoin took place in Marketplace section. knight22 was the first user to request for a separate local board dedicated to India in Meta.  Some literally very old satoshi timers hailing from India (diswara) supported the idea and was taken into theymos attention.

This was how the local board was created. For over 6 months the board didn't have a dedicated moderator, then Benson Samuel PMd theymos to make him the moderator at somewhere around March 2013. Then theymos replied Benson for how people of India are reacting to his moderator position.

I had written to theymos to grant me access as the moderator for the India forum.

It could use a lot of organizing and mild moderation.

He has requested me to post this and request India forum members for their opinion if everyone is alright with me as the moderator.

Looking forward to some responses and suggestions.

And then finally at March 20,2013 Benson was made the moderator for Indian local board. Till the coinsecure hack he was the sole moderator and was removed from the position at April 2019. This is how the Indian local board was created and Benson was made the moderator.

Croatian, Polish, Greek, Dutch and even Romanian have been more active than Japanese  in 2019 and they are marked as "less active".  Even Korean, that is marked as "inactive" has been more active lately than Japanese section.

The ranks are based on average daily posts within the whole period since birthday of each board. Yeah, it incorrectly reflects the level of activity of each board but for now, I stick with it. With that indicator, npost_daily, the Japanese board has higher rank.

Over time, each month passes, I will have more data and I will consider to add more indicators, such as total posts and average daily posts within last 120-days period.

He took average posts per day made in each section since their creation (and without accounting for previously existing language threads which were later moved to the newly created sections, but that is a minor detail) to sort the local boards.

It's interesting that so many Russians have shown interest in the project. Thinking about the Russian culture and society, I'm not completely surprised why. I'll make a new board, let's see how many non-English-speaking users we'll get.

As observed Europe and Asian Languages are dominating the local board section (it's good because it helps natives feel at home in the forum and discuss freely) but it makes me wonder what is happening to our brothers and Sisters in Africa. It's one of the continents known to have hundreds of local languages yet i barely know anyone in this forum who is from there. Could they have just abandoned using their local languages in the forum for English, French, German?
Or are they not just interest in discussing crypto?

English and French are the lingua franca of many African countries, they're here, usually posting in English. Sometimes you can recognize them by their signature if they want to announce themselves.

The date of Arabic Local board in the OP is May 01, 2017 which is before the date of this post by Theymos. It is clear that the correct creation date of Arabic board is October 9, 2017.

There are some posts made in a language that didn't have a local board at the time they made and then moved to the local board after its creation.

I know but as being said, I will use it for data analysis because it turns out to be more complicated to manually trace back when local boards officially created, at which post numbers in each boards. I don't have skills to do that so I stick with default birthday for analysis.

For correct birthday of each local boards, please use adjusted birthdays (if there are).

Additionally, for adjusted birthdays, I need more confirmations and information from others in each local boards because even you suggested it, your information might be wrong.

I am not sure but,
Back in February 2011 there was a few topic per day open in French.
The title were in french, not  referring to anything remotely English.


Also, the french board is ID 13,
It would make sens that it was created between the board ID 10 (russian - 28/7/2010 ) and the board ID 16 ( german 09/10/2010)

But with that being said, it looks like this message from 26th october 2010 was in french but not in a French board (the title is in english).

And I found this topic where on February 18 2011 grondilu says:

So we can assume (but I have no certitude) that the french section already existed on that date.

For fun, there is thistopic where Gavin Andresen met French people in Paris (too bad the links of the pictures are dead). But if he apologizes for not being able to write in french, it would confirm the existence of the french section on that date.

The french section was created on 1st or 2nd February 2011.

On this topic, we can see that the message was edited by sirius-m (*) on February 1st 2011. He changed the title:
Before edit : [French] xtranormal in French (look at the second message)
After edit: xtranormal in French
We can therefore conclude that this topic was created when there was no french section and sirius edited the message before moving it to the new french section.

And this topic is the first topic of the new section (a welcome topic which is quite logical).

Interesting topic. Japanase is last language that got sub -forum and from what I remember, theymos didn't wanted to add board for Japan, because he didn't saw enough activity. Probably in near future any new boards won't be added. In other languages and locations section there is only few topics who have some signs of activity.
My country probably will never get it. One of reasons is small population. In 2019 only 6 posts were made in our topic - it shows current peoples interest in crypto :/
And I noticed one interesting thing just now - our topic was started in June 2011, but first reply was made just in February 2012.

Well findings, @Halab, and @malevolent. As always, if one finds new things or incorrect things, please let me know. I said please guys. It's your local boards, something like your favorite houses and your languages.  

@LTU_btc, as I read (but not remembered all words wrote by theymos), he requested new moderators for Japanese because he can read, understand and write in Japanese but only most common words & phrases. He is not able to Japanese-proficient enough to manage that local board.

There is another reason why local boards are rarely to be created. If there is a local board, there is demand to find a new local moderator. That's something challenging. Admin feels difficult to find new moderators for new local boards and current moderators/ admins sometimes don't know local languages to manage them (if they have time to do it).

Given Ids, there is no doubt German board has been created after French board. Spanish board has been also created after French board.
Compare Ids of Polski and Greek boards. Their birthday in your list are 20/5/2013 and 30/5/2013 while their Ids are 142 and 120 respectively.
There should be some other errors too.

It means "sperm"  (good old Balkan mentality, never disappoints you  ). Croatian local board was created few years later, on the 18th December 2014.  First thread where its creation is mentioned is this one and thread was  open in less than one hour after Theymos announced new board.  First moderator was Lauda, and we don't have moderator since his removal (in 2017).

This thread is actually "happy new 2015!" thread and 18th December should probably be official birthday date (I used word "probably" because birthday could also be on the 1st July, I guess it is something to discuss).

Because the thread is for history of local boards, and we already have birthday, adjusted birthday, so now we should split the details for moderators into:

• Ex-moderators: for past ones.

One more thing to adjust for the table is adding URL links to those (ex-)moderators' profile pages.

We are no so big community but still we have a lot activity so I'm not sure why before we could have moderator but now I can't.
I remember that theymos started topic in our local board and asked us to suggest new moderator after Laude and we gave some sugestions but after that nothing happened.

Hey @tranthidung, I have one suggestion: maybe it wouldn't be bad to update status of local boards, in regards to their  current activity. I remember that you consider something like that as well

Over time, each month passes, I will have more data and I will consider to add more indicators, such as total posts and average daily posts within last 120-days period.

Imho, in current state it is kinda misleading, and doesn't give clear picture of  local boards status . If you take that 120 day period, you will see that  situation changed quite a bit. Several once very active boards are pretty much dead now, some that are marked as less active are more active now , etc.

Regarding the languages without local boards, I don't see the most active one, Pakistan listed there. In the last 4-5 months they are the most active among those without local boards by far (not that there is much activity there, beside them and eventually Bangladesh and Serbian) , and probably more active than quite a few local boards. In last 120 days they might even qualify for your "less active" status , since they probably have more than 5 posts per day.

Thanks for your suggestion, Rikafip. Honestly, I don't make new analysis on local boards because the one I made for the thread was based on help and data dump from LoyceV, not from DdmrDdmr.

The level of activity was identified from their stats (my long ago analysis). I don't follow their changes recent months because I don't think such stats will change considerably after a few months. So let's me see later.

I will use monthly statistics in your thread for OP's coming updates. And sure, a bonus for you (I advised you doing that), when I do it I will define colors for boards to help them having consistent colors over different charts. Stay tuned! (I will update color-recoded charts here)

I changed my plan and imput data from Rikafip, then decided to use estimated merit per 100 posts rather than merit per post.

Notes:

• Total posts are new ones in April but I don't know how total merits are for all posts (includes before-April posts and in-April posts) in each local board. I guess it is for all-time posts, includes old ones.
• Boards which zero new post in April were excluded.

I keep updating that thread since March 2020, so you will be able to see how situation progressed from then up until now . You are right though about Pilipinas board being less active lately. If you check that link, you will see that your local board is experiencing steep decline in all aspects: posts, merits and merit/post ratio, with August  being worst of them all.

For in depth look  at your local board I suggest you check @DDmrDdmr merit dashboard.
