Would you guys solo mine if you had about 1.2PH or still mine in a pool? I am sure it depends on risk tolerance but curious on people taught on this.

1.2PH is TOO MUCH to gamble with, and yet TOO SMALL to win blocks at somehow consistent time intervals, it's most certainly a terrible idea to gamble with 240$ worth of Bitcoin every day unless you think gambling is good for you.

This of course changes if you had like 50PH and 1PH was just 2% of your hashrate and you want to play with it, just like how most of us here do, the majority of hashrate is pointed to a pool that would give us somehow a stable income, and a bit of the hashrate is pointed to solo pool merely for fun/gambling given the low chances.

The short answer is: It's a terrible idea.

he would be better off pointing 1.15 ph to a legit pool that pays steady and 0.05 ph to ck- solo or better yet to Laurentia Pool

that pool was created by ck and has only 3 miners on it.

So even a 3PH it would still to low to solo. I am working my way up to 3PH

It depends on your risk/reward comfort level too.  Are you comfortable risking the $ to mine solo and come out with $0 -but- also risk the $ to mine solo and come out with 6.x btc?  Risk/reward comfort level is important to consider.

~snip~

he would be better off pointing 1.15 ph to a legit pool that pays steady and 0.05 ph to ck- solo or better yet to Laurentia Pool

that pool was created by ck and has only 3 miners on it.

Is that Laurentia Pool solo? I haven't seen it. And why would it be better to use that one instead of ck-solo?

it is not solo. it is an actual pool.  but when a block is hit you spilt with few players. ie you get a lot of coin say 1 or 2 btc.

https://pool.laurentiapool.org/#/miners

https://pool.laurentiapool.org/#/work

note I am btc addy 146xxxxxx if any of us hit a block I get 1.15 btc

I point 200 th here and 1800th on a fast steady payout pool

so for 200th I have a shot at 1.18 btc every day.

i use a paid off eth gpu rig mining at nice hash it earns 0.0011 btc a day i then rent 200th at nice hash and point it to Laurentia pool .  my power cost  for the gpu rig is 48 k-watts  at 13 cents or $6.50 a day I have a reasonable shot at collecting 1 block every 3 years say 1000 days . 1000 x 6.50 = 6500 power spent  in 3 years . about 40% we hit a block

and in the meantime my 1.8ph collects regular.

if you project out to 6 years about 80% shot I hit a block with the pool. I spend 13000 to collect 1.1 btc which is over 50k

this is a high risk high yield investment plan where the math favors profit.  ie investing not gambling.

you can still lose money doing it. but the math say you should profit.

Hello willi and everyone,

I have a few questions about mining because i'm still a beginner, and would really be happy if you can answer them for me, because i'm sure your an Bitcoin expert.

1- let's take block height 731248 for example, the hash of that block is 0000000000000000000932577f24607495a93060ff4823a7c6f4a2b9db9582ee.
my question is, what is the miner hashing all together that in the end he gets that block hash that is accepted by the network?
could you please write an example, on what hashes something, that is the result of the block hash? which is 0000000000000000000932577f24607495a93060ff4823a7c6f4a2b9db9582ee.
I know that the end hash-result should be starting with a lot of zeros, but i'm always wondering which value(s) the miner is hashing to get that end block hash result.

2- What is a good mining speed nowadays to get a good-imaginable chance to hit a block? in peta/s if possible.

3- Do you think 100 peta/s has a good chance to hit a block?

4- What you think, how much would 100 peta/s would cost to run in term of electricity?

Thank you so much for reading, and have a good day.  Smiley

Hello willi9974 and everyone else,

I'm a beginner rookie, I'm a child and my father give me an old PC to learn mining stuff. So I'm trying to test some lottery luck with my solo mining BTC using cgminer at 250 Mega Hashes per second (Mh/s).

I know its sounds crazy but i believe in luck!

I have a few questions about my mining because when i try to reach my stats at solo.ckpool, it shows nothing

I get connected to solo.ckpool.org diff 10k with stratum at my BTC address, with WU 2.6M and Diff 28.6T at 200 Mh/s

1. Why i don't get any info of my address?
2. How i can calculate a minimum hashrate for at least luck mining?

Thanks, and I'm sorry for the silly questions

. assuming that it is hashing it is so small that it will take a day or so to even show one share.

my question is, what is the miner hashing all together that in the end he gets that block hash that is accepted by the network?

I know that the end hash-result should be starting with a lot of zeros, but i'm always wondering which value(s) the miner is hashing to get that end block hash result.

Simply put, miners take the previous block's hash and add a nonce to it in an attempt to get a hash that is less than the current difficulty (has a certain number of leading zeros), here is a very simple example.

let's assume the previous hash is (11) and the miner is attempting a hash that starts with 0

if you hash 11 on it's own you get

Code:
4fc82b26aecb47d2868c4efbe3581732a3e7cbcc6c2efb32062c08170a05eeb8

you can use this website for testing > https://emn178.github.io/online-tools/sha256.html

so now I'll keep trying different values along side 11 to get a hash that starts with one 0

if I try 11f, I get

Code:
d6e3de5312a21c5a8c29f52895a62b9e7fa95353f4010981596adb1690b5f830

if I try 11f1

Code:
cb1e69aba1490a72448f6b57b166c895f3a44923630e2f5a350abeef326e5f5b

if I try 11f11

Code:
7085ae82df1433fc5749566d361f0e39a546d720cba84543f673bb6b695e3fcd

I kept trying all the way till I got to

Code:
11f1111111111111111111111111111111

and that gave me this hash which should solve a block

Code:
0299db69978d6c6b8a9afa2c6e2b9b24ae52df368b6170fa84ca30ed00cd3157

because this is just 1 zero, it was very easy for me to do it manually in just about 20 hahses, now if you try to get a hash that starts with two 0 zeros - it will take a lot longer, 5 zeros will be even worse and so on so forth.

Of course, the value of the hash includes many other things besides the prev block hash, but this is just me oversimplifying the matter.

2- What is a good mining speed nowadays to get a good-imaginable chance to hit a block? in peta/s if possible.

To feasibility mine bitcoin you need to have a good share of the total hashrate, so anything below EH worth means a somehow large fluctuation, you won't be making more money mining solo (except the pool fees), so it's not worth the fluctuation IMO.

Quote
3- Do you think 100 peta/s has a good chance to hit a block?

with 100% luck, you need 15 days to hit a block, so you could do so in 15 days, maybe 15 hours, and maybe 3 months, the question you should be asking yourself is "if I get an unlucky year whereby I only hit half the blocks I thought I would, can I survive?"

of course, if you measure this against infinity, it will be no different.

Quote
4- What you think, how much would 100 peta/s would cost to run in term of electricity?

It will depend on your power rate and the efficiency of your miners, 100ph= 10000th, if you use something like S19 with 30w/th, it means a total of 30*10000/1000=300Kwh, or  7,200Kwh daily, if you pay 10 cents per KwH you will pay $720 daily, if you mine with S9s at 90w/th, you will pay 2,160 daily.

And with no offense to you, mining far with the same of 100PH will need at least 2 million dollars investment and a ton of planning.

Hello again, i want o know the means of best share,

1. That isn't share sended to ckpool, is it? in that case cgminer shows 2.6 Hashes per minute, Is that right?

2. Why ckpool don't shows my stats at my address user?

3. Where do i see the real shares sended o pool?

4. I'm using a modified Cgminer 3.7.2  that uses a graphic card, so maybe that is the problem?

5. A guy offers me a 4-5 terahash ASIC machine, Is it enough for solo mining?

Thanks in advance, and sorry for silly questions, but i need to learn!

With that kind of hashrate, it will take you forever to find a valid share that would register on the pool.

Quote
2. How i can calculate a minimum hashrate for at least luck mining?

There is no such thing but in general anything below a few tens of Gigahashes is pretty useless IMO.

Quote

It's the best or largest share you submitted since the last block found by the pool.

Quote
2. Why ckpool don't shows my stats at my address user?

Same as the answer above (your hashrate is 200mh)

If you have free power or otherwise use the heat to warm your room, maybe it's worth it, if not then it's not.
