Short term period, No. However, the market is difficult to speculate and there are even new projects coming out that show a lot of potentials that could possibly replace those who are currently at the top. That's true but considering how Ethereum was built from being a platform used by the masses to create projects and many more it's kinda hard to imagine any coin overtaking ETH in term of popularity.
But competition is always good and if some crypto happen to have the capability to compete with ETH I hope they are better than ETH.

XRP has done that, but it just take a few time before the ETH came back to the right way. There will always a chance to compete the coin since this crypto currency price are purely depend on supply and demand meaning just the user of crypto currency will only do that. There is party and some whales who have a huge money and they intend to make new coin placed in the second position and these thing will just a dream.

Maybe as you can see, there are some old altcoin who just get rid of from its position. Take a look with chainlink as an example, this is new altcoin and now has occupied in six's position and also bitcoin cash with in several years always occupies the fourth position but now it was just get rid of by tether (USDT). Beat about what? About the price? In this market there are a lot of projects that cost more than ETH and BTC, but those are just bullshit projects. BTC and ETH will still be the top two projects in this market and there aren't any projects with a higher market cap.

Only a stronger project can beat Eth, it's very difficult because the ecosystem is very big and all the other coins are supported by eth. A project that can beat ETH could be TRON or why not, polkadot that in these days is going good!

A newly listed coin could have a higher market value but that doesn't not determine superiority over Ethereum. Many cryptos have passed over the market price of the two big names in this industry but the bottomline is that, these two ; Bitcoin and Ethereum, remain in its place and that maybe because of their market cap and overall dominance over other cryptos.

I think replacing Ethereum from 2-d coinmarketcap place is quite possible. Yearn Finance issued only 30,000 coins and this explains the high cost of one coin. Now compare this with 112 million Ethereum coins. That is, the amount of Ethereum is 3700 times greater than the amount of YFI. Thus, with an equal Supply, the price of YFI should be less than the price of ETH by 3700 times, i.e. it will be equal to 3.5 dollars.

Probably in the future. No one knows what would be the leading project that could tie up with eth but for now eth is really taking its time to be with 2nd place. With the expansion of defi and series of new competitors we would likely to see what could be the the race and who will be the top altcoin this year.
