USSR is not equal to Russia. Less than 60% of the population of the former USSR was accounted by Russia, while the remainder was distributed in the remaining 14 republics (especially Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Belarus). What the Philippines need to get that multiple medals in the Olympics is a dedicated officer that will give supports to the athlete's needs and conditioning. Pilipino has lots of talents and courageous athletes that will dominate the world of sports if they have given the right support from the government but it seems like that kind of support is rarely seen nowadays. You will earn their support just after you win some medals or in the other words, you need to struggle with yourself first before getting some recognition which is the hardest part of being an athlete. As you can see, we only have one athlete that more likely gets us medal this year and that's in the weight lifting women division where she works hard before getting some kind of recognition from our country.

That's the problem, our athletes don't have the support needed which ends up with the athletes asking for donations to private entities although they represent the country, this country's athletes don't have a future here, it's better if they move to other countries where they are taken care of, look at Wesley So, he won't be flourishing if he stayed here.

Also, Russia is not taking part this time in the summer Olypics, because they are banned. Athletes from Russia are taking part under the banner of ROC (Russian Olympic Council). Back in 2016, it was United Kingdom which surprised everyone. I was expecting China to finish at the 2nd place, but GB managed to overtake them in the medals tally. Chinese population is getting more aged, and that may be the reason for their poor performance recently. On the other hand, UK benefits immensely from immigration of athletes from other countries.

I am looking forward to the handball tournament at the Olympics. Even if Croatia isn't participating, Olympic handball is always highly entertaining. The Swedes and Danes are in the same group and they will battle it out for the 1st place. I don't see Bahrein, Japan, or Egypt being noteworthy opponents. Portugal could be tricky, but should be beatable by the Scandinavians. The other group is much stronger with France, Germany, Spain, and Norway.

Without that big support from the government, even athletes find some private businesses to bring sponsors but the type of
wide support is the one that everybody wants from the government.

It's been a long long time but still same issues and concern with the government, I echo your statement if the athletes wanted
to have a better future, leaving this place and find those who can offer is the best option to do.

But in the other hand, there's Pusong Pinoy thing and athletes wanted to dedicate their talents and skills for the glory of their motherland!

During practice the players felt that it was hotter than normal, in these cases I think that the athletes should adapt to the weather, since there is no other way, however how things look, this could be the most popular games of history.

Toyota dropped out of Olympic games in the last moment and they are not the only sponsor to quit before the start so it is still not sure if Tokyo Olympics will be held afterall.
In the same time Japan is also having big problems with their radioactive water from last nuclear disaster, and they want to simply dump it in the ocean.
Olympics started bad and it may end up even worse.

Quick question, how does a country qualify to play the Olympics? I really want to see my country play but they aren't even participating so I don't exactly get what is the requirements to do be part of Olympics, also who will be carrying the torch this time?

Countries do not really qualify, countries are just part of the olympic committee or not, athletes can qualify even if their country is not affiliated to the committee or they are under some special circumstances, there are only a bunch of athletes under those circumstances but when the opening ceremony is taking place they are the ones following not the flag of their country but the olympic flag, and the athletes can only qualify if they reach a minimum mark established by the olympic committee, and if they do they can go to the olympic games.

I've never watched a women's football match, so don't know if there will be an interesting match for this sport, but for men's football it's for sure.

Normally, men's football in the Olympic Games is one of the less prominent sports. The players are not from the main teams, they are usually only under-23.
The female is a little different, having already the main players in the tournament.

Anyone who thinks that men's football games are fun and women will not be is either not a football fan or a sexist person, which I am sure Strongkored is not, I have seen him around and he is a decent good person. So the only option is that you probably haven't watched women football for too long, sure they are not as fast, as strong, as "entertaining" as men, but they are playing fundamental football that we all love so much, and they are improving as well, women football 10-20 years ago can't even compete in today's game, they are doing much much better these days and improved a lot.

So, fundamentals+improving equals a lot of high quality football to watch. I personally prefer women Olympic football games over men very easily, it is not even close because men do not play properly and they are all trying to use it as a way to show themselves for potential teams that may buy them.

At the time of passing this news, the Colombian television channel Caracol is saying that there are now 6 athletes from Great Britain isolated because apparently they were infected with Covid-19, in fact the Olympic committee is considering that if the cases of Covid-19 continue increasing they will take deprivation measures or suspend the games, as well as the Brazilian soccer team that showed false positives.

This year the tokyo government made unique steps to prevent the spread of covid 19 for athletes and one of them by making a bed made of cardboard and called an anti sex bed, the bed was specifically designed for athletes so that the Tokyo Olympic participants did not have sex during the Olympics .
So that it can minimize the spread of the Covid-19 virus in the athlete village, the current pandemic certainly forces the committee to continue to look for solutions to make the Olympics a success but also to minimize the spread of corona, moreover some Olympic athletes are reported to have tested positive for the corona virus while in the athlete village .

It is true that the International Olympic Committee, over the last few years, has not been very financially friendly to the organization of the games. But, I think if you do that, it will be the last straw. I think the Committee would have serious problems to resolve.

Agree about it. Women football improved a lot in recent years. Maybe 10-15 years ago even high level competition wasn't very interesting and exciting to watch. But now, I watched last World Cup in 2019 and I really liked it. Offcourse, there is less speed, power, but it's interesting to watch. Not like women basketball or ice hockey.

Weightlifting is tournament where half of results change after few years because of positive doping tests .
About transgender, I think it's not fair that she or he (don't know how I should call that athlete) is allowed to participate with women.
And at the same time athletes like Caster Semenya aren't allowed to participate bause she have too much testosterone...

I think it's a little unfair to blame only Japan. The International Olympic Committee, I also think it has not helped, as is normal. And they could very well create rules or criteria, to help minimize this type of situation.

For example, it could have closed the acceptance of players earlier, and forced the Olympic delegations from each country to travel to Japan earlier.

I don't think that we have to blame Japan, nobody should be, they did what they have to do with the pandemic to prevent the further spread, you probably don't have a lot of knowledge about the pandemic and how to manage and organize these big events so I don't think that you have any right to say that they are to blame.
