China has taken a good start - 75% of the medals are gold. Given the fact that 339 sets of medals will be played, it is too early to talk about any leadership, we must wait until at least a third of the medals have been played.

It's still too early, I have not seen the USA on the list yet but I think they'll catch up in the medal tally competition although it's possible that China will bag the biggest number of medals in this Olympics. I'm following the event already as I have subscribed to our local cable provider and I will not anymore miss a single action of my favorite games.

Quote
Interestingly enough, the number of medals to be played has increased by almost 10% compared to the previous Olympiad.
What does it mean? Are there sports or games added?

Given the fact that for China this is part of an ideological competition in which they are trying their best to win, it seems to me that China's chances are higher.

As for the medals, in comparison with the previous Olympiad, several sports have been added - karate, rock climbing, surfing, skateboarding and something else plus some kind of sports discipline.

...
Its a big surprise that USA is not even on this list at all. China as expect to dominate in this olympic games even from the start. But we should expect USA to start winning some medals and getting fast to the top of the list.
I don't expect the USA to top the list but they should be ranked higher than most countries on the list after a couple of days.

Yeah I did expect US to take a medal in the first event (women's weightlifting 49kg but the US contestant didn't even make the lifts) but pre-Olympic favourites were USA at 11/10, China was about 45/10. Still way too early as track events is where the Americans excel usually, hard to beat physique but of course, someone mentioned pharmacology before;)

Also as KTCChampions pointed out, more events like surfing and skateboarding -- I doubt China has expertise that can compete with sports that seem to be almost culturally North American. So let's talk about lobbying success too eh?

Speaking of cultural dominance. Austria just won a gold too from 237km streetrace. Anna Kiesenhofer -- she's not even pro, a math teacher. Bloody awesome.

Is anyone interested in Olympic skateboarding talks? I will be covering that here so if anyone wants to chime in with predictions beforehand, let's do it! Some huge names are gonna show off their skills, but I can't really think of any situation where the US will not dominate.

Four medal events will be held:

Women & Men
Park
Street

to keep this skateboarding thread alive, here is the ruleset.

• Street
This competition is held on a straight ‘street-like’ course featuring stairs, handrails, curbs, benches, walls and slopes. Each skateboarder performs individually and uses each section to demonstrate a range of skills, or ‘tricks’. Judging takes into account factors such as the degree of difficulty of the tricks, height, speed, originality, execution and the composition of moves, in order to award an overall mark.

Skateboarders often ‘slide’ the wooden deck of their skateboards and ‘grind’ the metal trucks (components which connect the wheels and bearings to the deck of the skateboard) directly along the course's curbs and handrails.

When riding along the course and in order to get their skateboards on top of or over the rails and curbs, competitors often perform an ‘ollie’, a trick whereby the rider and board leap into the air without the use of the rider's hands. Skilled skateboarders make this difficult trick appear easy.

The side-on position taken by riders of surfboards and skateboards is known as their ‘stance’. A position with the left leg facing the direction in which the skateboarder wishes to move is known as ‘regular stance’, while some prefer to position their right leg facing the direction in which they wish to move, which is known as ‘goofy foot’. A skateboarder's usual stance is called their ‘main stance’; when changing the position of the front leg during competition, this is known as ‘switch stance’. The marks awarded for tricks performed with the main stance differ from those performed with switch stance, as the degree of difficulty is increased with the latter.

A common trick for skateboarders is to ollie and then flip the deck of the skateboard in various ways under their feet, miraculously bringing the board back to their feet before landing. An added variation to flipping the board is to also rotate the body at the same time. When performed well, after the board is flipped, the skateboarder can make it appear as if the board reattaches to the feet by magnet. Parallel, length-wise and other dynamic, multi-dimensional flips all require a high level of technique.

• Park
Park competitions take place on a hollowed-out course featuring a series of complicated curves — some resembling large dishes and dome-shaped bowls. From the bottom of the cavity, the curved surfaces rise steeply, with the upper part of the incline either vertical or almost vertical. Among the attractions of park competitions are the immense heights achieved by climbing the curves at speed and performing amazing mid-air tricks.

The variety of tricks available to a skateboarder increases with the height gained launching out of the park’s curves. The degree of difficulty can depend on whether the deck of the skateboard is grabbed with a hand when performing mid-air tricks, which part of the deck is grabbed, which hand is used to grab the deck and the posture of the rider while grabbing the deck.

Difficulty and originality also increase if the deck is rotated in mid-air, flipped or if the competitor is able to rotate their body while in mid-air. Other tricks include variations of balancing (stalls), grinds and slide tricks on the ‘lip’ of the ramp.

Well, here it is, the first ever Men's Street Skateboarding Olympic comp has ended and boy was it a shit show XD Commentating was horrible and judging was iffy at best, but hopefully they learn from this for the next Olympics (If not for the men's Park or women's Street and Park comps)

The results are as follows:

Men's Street Result

Gold: Yuto Horigome (Japan), 37.18

Silver: Kelvin Hoefler (Brazil), 36.15

Bronze: Jagger Eaton (United States), 35.35

4th: Vincent Milou (France), 34.14

5th: Angelo Caro Narvaez (Peru), 32.87

6th: Aurelien Giraud (France), 29.09

7th: Nyjah Huston (United States), 26.10

8th: Gustavo Ribeiro (Portugal), 15.05

Obviously, those are just the finals result's no need for me to post all of the heats. Yuto winning or even finishing on the podium is not a surprise at all, but what is a shock is Nyjah's terrible placement. He was favored to take the gold or at least silver, but he completely fell off. It seems that it's a bad strategy that ended him as he was trying to do harder tricks and failing them where Yuto was doing easier tricks but consistently.

Latest updates on the medals:

It will be a tough competition between Japan, china and united states.

It seems like it i think the usa will get the most medals but i hope we will see a close competition this year and i think japan athletes will get the advantage of playing at home in favorable conditions as we have seen today in tennis competions where nishikori won against the ranked 7 rublev 2 0 so i think we might see fierce competition from japan side.

If i had to choose now which nation will be on top after the olympics i would go for china. The US Team will probably win a lot more medals than China during the Track and field competitions. In swimming the US is also strong but China can also win a few medals there so no big advantage for the US. Where i see the big advantage for China are the smaller and lesser known sports, like Badminton where China is favorite and also the shooting competitions. China already won their first gold medal there and others may follow.

In the Olympics, largest number of medals are allotted in athletics and some of the other disciplines such as gymnastics. China is weak in these and the US is expected to dominate.

You can check this:
https://www.gracenote.com/virtual-medal-table/
https://olympicmedalspredictions.com/

According to the expectations from most of the gamblers, US is expected to finish first with 40 golds, followed by China at 33. As the host nation, Japan may finish third. Sportsbooks have given the odds for US topping the medal table at 1.07 (92% probability). For China, the odds are +850.

Well it looks like so far I'm right with David Popovic. He qualified for the semi-finals at just 16 and tomorrow night  we will have the first semi-finals and I must tell you that he will reach the final as he is super fast in the water.

Also , what football is this ? I simply can't watch football at Olympics ..it's unwatchable. What I did enjoy was Surfing last night even if the waves were not so great for everyone.

From the charts United States are already leading the race and I don't see them stopping now. And with some big sports to go like basketball, Swimming, track and field games, gymnastics all big sports that  the USA dominates in and score in them.. this should end in this order
  • United States
  • China
  • Japan

David Popovici? He was far ahead of the others in Heat #2 (swimming 200 metre freestyle). But overall, he is not in the top 3. South Korean swimmer Hwang Sunwoo is the favorite to win the gold medal. But I am impressed with Popovici. How can a 16 year old finish at the 4th place (In heats. I hope he will finish among the top 3 in the finals). It will be great if he wins a medal. A gold will be like earth shattering. The last time a 16 year old won Olympic gold in swimming was 89 years ago, in 1932.

Following mostly news and few recorded videos, I see there is few surprises in several competitions from less experienced athletes taking even a gold medal Wink
In the news, the title is "shocking win" lol

It's a bit strange to see that USA have 0 medals after first day.But if you will look at events, where medals were given on the first day, most sports is where USA usually don't have outstanding results - shooting, archery, fencing, judo, taekwondo and etc.
Things will change in next days. On Sunday there will be some swimming finals - it's most interesting thing for me tomorrow.

It's still very early in the tournament and I'm sure they'll get small medals especially in the track events. However, I was expecting a clean sweep from USA Basketball men team and they have lost their first game today against France, having lost in one of their final preparation games to Nigeria, I presumed they'll show a completely different character in the main tournament, but here we are.

They'll probably still make it through group but could they face a shocking elimination after then ?

If he takes gold at that age, it's not unlikely he'll be present at at least a couple more Olympics before hitting his true peak. Amazing stuff, but then you can't ignore what they put their bodies and minds through to get to that stage of elite performance.

Reminds me of when Phelps swept everyone before him, and then sunk a hole-in-one putt to show he wasn't merely a swimmer.

On the very first day of Olympic my country have started its medal count. I feel happy for it, because for a long time the count looks zero, and by the end the medal count used to increase a little. Mirabai Chanu have made it with the silver medal on the weight lifting event.

Its impressive my country lack high quality athletes even if we have a lot of promising ones i do not know where the problem is and in all the participation in the olympics we only manahed to win 17 medals which five of them are gold ones i hope the goverment find solutions and provide more support for these athletes.

David Popovic will bring back the gold home to Romania as this kid is the young superstar of Romania. All the country is cheering for him and in this night I bet that a lot of Romanians will not sleep and will watch the 1st Semifinal of 100m Free. Most of you here probably don't know that he has 36 national records broken before the age of 16 ...so if this won't tell you a lot , then I don't know what. Even if he won't win the gold now , I'm sure he will win so many in his career.

...//...:Well, Olympic football tournament is always full of surprises because it's youth squads, mixed with 3 older players - it's difficult to prejudice who is who.
In women tournament, last World Cup winners USA surprisingly had no chances against Sweden.

You are right, the desire of the amateurs gives an extra balance to each game, but without a doubt the best youth players who will have world relevance will are in the Olympics, except perhaps the African countries who always have very good teams in the amateur categories, the teams favorites they do not differ much from professional categories.

In the case of women's football, the defeat of the United States does not matter Smiley they are still favorites although it is still missing, but they achieved a good 6x1 victory against New Zealand, so the Americans are my winning bet on the gold medal.

For me biggest surprise today was in women cycling where gold was won by Austrian Anna Kiesenhofer. Nobody saw her as potential winner, she don't even have contract with PRO team. Annemiek van Vleuten from Netherlands after finish celebrated like she won gold, because she didn't realised that someone was in fron of her.
Also what a way to win gold - Chinese Li Fabin lifted 166kg standing on one leg:

If I'm not mistaken, the last meeting of the senior teams of Germany and Saudi Arabia at the World Championship ended with a score of 11-0  Cheesy so this result can really be considered unexpected.
As for the Japanese team, this minimal victory is quite normal - the adult team of Japan is strong enough and has some winning traditions (Asian Cup).

Based on these results it looks like the upcoming results to be more surprising. Probably the lucky ones who just go with random selection of odds without analysing the team performance might make some good win. What is the odd for Saudi Arabia once before the start of the game.
