Also, I reckon Berlanga vs. Jermall Charlo will certainly bring more excitement for the fans. These other fighters he was calling out might not bring much money for Zuffa and uncle Dana.
Jermall Charlo is living proof that you can be mediocre and still become a world champion with multiple successful defenses. So, yes, even Edgar Bumlanga could become champion one day in this watered down division. Perhaps it was also due to the weak era of the middleweight division. Just imagine facing a supposedly tough opponent in Tony Harrison. In which is requires a rematch to settle the score. Or the other Charlo that campaigns at 160 lbs, and the best fighter he fought is Sergiy Derevyanchenko or Jose Benavidez Jr (the weakest of the Benavidez brothers). I had to look up who the current champions are and Munguia and Mbilli would be the most marketable opponents. They would also be the hardest to beat. If Canelo wins against Mbilli, that would be another champion besides Hamzah Sheeraz that Berlanga has lost to.
Yes, that's the only name that rings a bell, Sheeraz who beat Berlanga but has a not so good performance in his recent fights. But Mbili might be a dangerous fight for Canelo as Christian has power as well.

However, what Berlanga has is a personality that everyone will like to watch if they like him or if they do not like him heheheheh! They will still watch and this is the most important for uncle Dana!

However, it didn't happen and so he disappoints a lot of his opponent fans. And this could be the case of Berlanga that's why Dana White is willing to take that risk and make him a villain in every fight so that it will sell. So it's not just about the talent, it's about who can bring the money for Dana and Zuffa boxing.

Calling Jermall mediocre is crazy work i’m not even gonna lie😭. I’m not even a fan of the guy but based on his resume, i wouldn’t say he’s just some mediocre fighter who got lucky with a title win. Bro legit cleaned up the 154 pound division and held the WBC middleweight belt for years and was able to defend them before his inactivity coupled with his legal issues and the WBC stripping him of his title turned him into a cautionary tale. Regardless of all that, you saying that he is proof that any type of mediocre person or fighter can be a champion is a little too far. He might have fought bums later on during his middleweight title reign but he earned his reputation as a world champion in his prime and i give him respect for that.
Berlanga on the other hand is a different story. His 24-2 record looks decent, but the biggest names he has faced have exposed his weaknesses. He lost to Canelo on points after getting dropped early on in the fight, his next fight, he gets K’Od by Hamzah Sheeraz in round 5. He recently returned after a year out, got dropped in his fight against Steven butler but he was able to get his shit together and stop Steven in round 7. Credit to him for later stopping Steven butler in that fight but nothing about his resume say he is ready to dominate the top guys at 168.
You’re right about Munguia and Mbili currently being the most marketable opponents. Both of them seem to have more polish and a better recent form than Berlanga has shown. Sheeraz already has a win against Berlanga and now holds the WBO belt. If it happens that Canelo beats Mbili in late October, then Berlanga would have lost to two world champions in that weight class. Although that doesn’t automatically make the division weak, it just shows that Berlanga probably isn’t the elite fighter the “Chosen One” hype made him out to be. Personally i don’t think that the boxing super middleweight division is completely soft, we still got fighters like Canelo, Sheeraz, Mbilli, Munguía, Iglesias, and a few others who can actually still fight, but the problem with that division is that it is fragmented and full of guys who have been protected or inactive at the wrong times. Berlanga becoming champion one day is possible the same way a lot of solid but limited fighters have collected belts in the four belt era. Now whether that would mean much is another question.

With a good promoter and wise manager, a mediocre boxer can be a boxing champion with an unblemished record. That is the power of match up manipulaion. The boxer's camp can just evade those who can threaten their boxer's dominance and record and choose boxers that can be easily beaten. We have seen many kinds of this move, so it is not a surprise to see a not-so-good boxer holding titles.

You are conflating Jermall with his brother Jermell. There is only 1 letter difference and they look identical so it is easy to mix them up. Jermell, who was undisputed at 154 had a pretty weak reign for an undisputed champion, but his achievements cannot be denied. He was a bit better than average and the better of the two brothers. Jerm all on the other hand, only became a world champion after Canelo was elevated to Franchise champion by the WBC. I would rather forget the whole Franchise belt nonsense, but it is relevant because it allowed Jermall to become a paper champion. After this, Canelo wasn’t obligated to fight him so we never got to see him tested at the elite level. Also due to politics, PBC wasn’t working with other promoters and we never got to see him against GGG, Demetrius Andrade and some other good fighters in his weight class.

Saw this also on my social media feed. It just unfortunate that Prichard Colon didn't recover from his injury. I don't wanna be pessimistic but boxing is a dangerous sport and Colon will not be the last to fall in this brutal sport. I did a little research and it said that an average of 10-13 boxers died every year due to acute injuries sustained in the ring. That is why i'm wondering on why Manny Pacquiao is still in this business even if he already got the money that would last his entire life when this bring serious threat to his health especially if he will fight young champions. RIP champ Prichard Colon.

Maybe Manny is built different unlike any other boxers. He is really a physical specimen, just look at his calves muscle as you can see that it is like a tree trunk and that were his power could be generating.

My bad, i totally mixed them up there. It’s hard not to when their names are only one letter apart from each other 😄 Regardless, i still think it’s pretty harsh to call Jermall a mediocre fighter even though i agree that the whole franchise champion situation made his WBC title win look less impressive. I’d just say he was a very good fighter whose resume never fully lived up to his abilities. We never really got to see him go against the elite guys who could’ve shown us just how good he actually was. Also his period of inactivity obviously is not helping his situation at all either. As it is now, it seems like his future in boxing is basically at a crossroad and if he still has plans to become a serious championship level contender again, then I’d say things are looking pretty bleak for him now considering his age; he doesn’t really have unlimited time left to prove what he could have been.

I remember watching this fight on one of those early PBC cards. It’s not like those rabbit punches were accidental. Williams was repeatedly hitting the back of the head on purpose. Maybe because they were both undefeated prospects, the referee didn’t want to interfere too much, but it is inexcusable that he allowed so much blatant fouling when Williams should have been disqualified. The referee or ringside doctor could have at least stopped the fight when it became obvious that Colon had suffered some trauma. The frustrating part is that Colon never got any justice. He received some financial assistance and the incident helped raise awareness, but nobody was ever punished.

I never watched the fight live, but I heard about his unfortunate demise through social media after he suffered for over a decade. The referee and the ringside doctor are actually responsible for the incident, as they are in place to protect the fighter and they clearly failed to do so. As per the articles I have read, Colón complained to both the referee and the doctor regarding this, but they never took action. The investigation that took place did not find any wrongdoing by the officials, which is actually strange. Source: The Fight That Changed Boxing Forever

That's really the risk of boxing, that's why many are saying it should be banned. I remember a Filipino boxer Z Gorres, he beat Luis Melendez in Las Vegas in 2009 but collapsed after the fight because of a brain injury and suffered for years. Good thing he was able to recover. Though he was never a world champion, he still won some regional titles.

Although there are variations to the punch, the head is always the target. In a match, constant head blows are very dangerous aside from that, the referee's late reaction to stop the fight often creates severe injury to the boxer. There are lots of cases where a boxer suffer inrecoverable damage because the referee react so slow.

And the good thing is that Manny Pacquiao help Z Gorres with financial that's why Manny is beloved not only us but the whole boxing community as he goes and help back our local boxers. It's true, no one has been punished by this incident and it was a deliberate punch behind the head that really cause the death of Colon.

He was still in his peak i could when that incident happened. Though he didn't die but he didn't fully recovered as his mobility and speech are affected. Good thing though that Manny Pacquiao has extended his help for the hospitalization and now Gorres has a little store as his means of livelihood as he can't work anymore.

I'm not familiar with Z Gorres incident. But thanks for bringing this up as I have to go back and read his story. And we can all thanks Manny for that kind of gesture as he help those Filipino boxers that brought glory to us before Manny became a Filipino icon. He knows how to take care of those legends before him and most likely that's why up to this day he still wants to fight to bring the Philippines into the world map again and again. The the Gorres family will be grateful for the help that Manny gave to them.

In his story, brain injury was found straight after the fight, however doctors still were not able to do anything. There is no solution so far to such injury. 13 years have passed since then, and one of the improvements is that he has started only to recognize some people. When I read your post, I find it amazing that Z Gorres managed to recover.

When talking about brain injury and boxing, story of Magomed Abdusalamov is what comes to my mind first. In his story, brain injury was found straight after the fight, however doctors still were not able to do anything. There is no solution so far to such injury. 13 years have passed since then, and one of the improvements is that he has started only to recognize some people. When I read your post, I find it amazing that Z Gorres managed to recover. The recovery time is really different from person to person, Z Gorres was just lucky that he was able to recover. I think one important thing is also the emotion and mindset, because having the will to recover can really help someone keep fighting. Some boxers who suffer this kind of injury may lose hope, especially if they were already champions and suddenly feel like they lost everything. That can make recovery even harder because mentally they may no longer want to fight anymore.

In a video, yes he can talk but he still struggles walking and he's not back to his physical form, he also gained weight. So even if he recovered mentally, physically he's still not the same. But that's already a big progress considering it was a brain injury, at least we can see how much he has recovered.
