I didn't watch Tunisia's match but Iraq played way better than I expected, they were not afraid of attacking and in several occasion they could have scored. They have been a little unlucky too. The tackle Messi made warranted a yellow card, but fortunately the referee was not interested in issuing one and rather gave a free kick to Algeria. If you are using the same refereeing standards of the first match of this World Cup, which saw three red cards for challenges that should have been deemed as Yellow cards, then this definitely warranted a yellow card.

Unfortunately referees don't want (or can't?) take serious decisions that would impact the match. I like Messi, I think he is a very good person and surely he is not known for being aggressive on the pitch, so I understand he didn't mean to commit such a bad foul, but that was a red card anyway.
It brought me back to 2010 when De Jong should have been sent off for an horrific foul to Xabi Alonso but it was very early in the game and the referee later admitted that he "didn't feel like giving a red card after a few minutes".

Yes I think that sometimes the players attitude is considered and when a player is known for making rough tackles they become more prone to collecting yellow cards and red cards in football games and a player whom the officials are aware that a foul committed may just be in error of the heat of the moment, they can get away with some situations. It was a tackle worthy of a booking, but many other players in the past not even Messi has gotten away with similar situations and so nobody should try to raise or encourage the agenda that FIFA are starting to favor Messi in this World Cup.

Messi actually has a very fantastic performance with his hat-trick, two of three goals are beautiful ones but this foul is really deserved to be given a card, not only a yellow card but a direct red card.

It's how things work for GOAT like Messi because we know a big fact that FIFA need money and they need Messi to appear in coming matches. If it's doable to avoid red cards for Messi, they will do it with their best, and it's exactly what happened.

It is just insane to see Messi announcing his entry into the world cup with this kind of banger that even an average young player can not measure up with. when you think that at his age he will be slowing down you are seeing this kind of performing from him? it is extremely on a world class level.
