Nope, in my view gambling is a style of life rather than a hobby. True and abstracted gamblers will bet on everything even on tomorrow's whether and it doesn't matter with whom and where. They are  gambling in the sake of process which is part of their psychologic life. I'm not in their class. For me personally gambling is a kinf of  "hash-time"  session when spending  my leisure time.

Gambling can be considered anything, depending on how we view it. You can consider it as "life style" or "style of life" for yourself, but you can't generalize it. Not sure what you mean by "true gamblers" or "abstracted gamblers", but it isn't likely as a lifestyle if a gambler bets on everything and do it carelessly. IMO, it is just the way of wasting money with gambling if a gambler does it in that way. I think you need another example if you want to describe it as a "life style". 

I'm also a bit similar as you. I just bet when I've free time (spare time). I'm not a typical gambler who push all my funds in a single day. I've an allocation for gambling daily, weekly, or even monthly. I'm not a part of those gamblers who can spend all my funds because of chasing the wins or trying to recover losses. When I have a bad day and get some losses, I'll stop it earlier in that day and return again tomorrow.

I would like to note that I often also come across a stereotypical perception by other people of the fact that I love casinos, betting and poker. They immediately start looking at me as if I could go and lose my entire salary in one go. But it's not like that!

Nonetheless, for those who are trying to gamble for fun or trying to make money with it under the right management, you have to ensure that you have a viable plan and budget that will speak well of proper management towards it. If they just gamble for fun, they must have control over themselves so they will not gets more tempt from gambling and can not stops gambling. That happens to many people so they must remember to take care of themselves and must avoids the big lose and not use gambling for a hobby. Otherwise, they will lose much money when playing gambling too long.

If they use money management in gambling, they will not lose that much money. But back again, if they use gambling as a hobby, they will difficult to control their money because as a hobby, gambling will needs much money to be played. Yes of course, because I think that's the more plausible reason why society has a negative stigma or viewpoint towards gambling activities which is all caused by gamblers who treat their gambling activities blindly which makes them experience many adverse effects. And honestly I just heard about the idea that gambling is included in the hobby group, and I believe that one of the reasons why this idea is rarely heard or rarely people say that gambling is a hobby is because this activity is not worth the reward, or in the sense that the risks are always far greater than the positive rewards.

On the other hand, yes what you said is true that the attitude or point of view of society can be bad when knowing that the person is a gambler or involved in gambling, and maybe I would say one of the reasons why society has such a bad point of view towards gamblers, which is because usually gamblers often spread problems or invite people who have a socialization relationship with them to experience problems, especially in terms of money, as evidence it often happens that a gambler always tries to borrow money from people closest to him but they are irresponsible and do not pay their debts.

Started as a hobby and ended with a gambling addiction. But I really think those who bet on sports may not build this kind of problem. Most cases are from casino and slot players.
I mean, how many sports can a person be good at? 3 or maybe 5. This means there's always a hiatus where he won't gamble for a day or two or maybe even a week.
