If employees aren't getting paid during the holidays and over time, it's easy. Go and complain to the ethics board and committee or whatever it is called in your country. There are labor codes that can be applied for that and for sure employers don't want to face such penalties when their employees complain about such. That's why if they're being asked to work on holidays and it's also part of the job that the employee accepted, just work and take all of those benefits. I've been there when I did worked for some companies before and I always got paid for my service and even got some bonus and giveaways from them.
In any country there are always agencies and labor laws to protect workers but to be able to complain and be protected by law. First, you need to make sure that you are complying with the company's regulations and the employment contract between you and the company. Sometimes some companies quietly remove the holiday bonus rule, but most workers do not read the labor contract carefully before signing. If we fall into this situation, do not expect to be protected by any agency. In many countries there is a legal minimum unavailable below which you cannot enforce your business policies and, in addition to them, each professional activity has its own collective agreement that improves these essential minimums. You simply cannot omit it from your contract models because abusive clauses would be illegal regardless of whether the worker consents and signs them. But that's is a civil rights achievement that has not been achieved around the world. I sense that the worlds where tabas and Iranus live are very different from each other.

Closing offices during holidays for like two weeks might affect business revenue, but how much?
It really depends on the regular income that the company gets and maybe for a big company closing for two weeks will be enough to cause losses for the company. Almost no company does this because the employee's holiday schedule is determined and there is no such thing as closing for two weeks just for the sake of a holiday. You've been working from January to December, you should have sustainable investments and is it worth making employees miss out on time with their families and friends? I don't think so.
But what do you think about making someone's work mandatory during holidays?
If you are not ready with the company's rules then you should not work in that company and what must be understood is that the company has its own management in managing the company and it cannot be run according to the wishes of the workers. This is not about whether or not it is right to make employees miss out on time with their families, but rather how the company can continue to produce to ensure that its business runs well because two weeks is a long enough holiday for the company. The company gives leave to employees, it is up to the workers to use the time given to spend with their families and I think whether it is appropriate or not is not judged by what you say. If we really don't like the work system of the company then quit and find a job that suits our wishes.

As an employee, we won't complain if we know from ourselves that we violate some labor codes or company rules that are being implemented. It won't make sense to complain if from within you are a violating employee. That's why even before signing contracts, it's best to ask and review it so that you know what you are signing and you won't have any troubles if it's about holiday policies and required day to duty. But that's is a civil rights achievement that has not been achieved around the world. I sense that the worlds where tabas and Iranus live are very different from each other.
Hehe, you're right. Most companies do have different takes with this matter and that's why if someone here is working with a good company and gives work-life balance and incentives to their employees, you're in the right company.

By doing this, you prioritize employees' satisfaction and well-being. This is why people don't leave jobs, they leave toxic work environments. When you make people feel comfortable and loved, they will stay, and it will increase productivity and mutual respect.

It doesn't make sense if Christians are going for holidays, other believers to be working their ass off, they all should go together and have time with their families. I don't know for other people, holidays are most often 2 days that's enough for any man that want to spend quality time with their family and after then everyone can come back. A times, even the workers do hangout during the festive period, it wouldn't make sense if two workers of different beliefs can't see each with such work policy. There is no soft life in running a business, the days you work is how some business makes money, closing 2 weeks is too early but then it depend on the nature of your job. You don't expect a medical doctor to close 2 weeks before the festive period, who is going to take care of the patients, who is going to attend to emergency. Just so you know, there are instances people get emergency of their work even when they on holidays, that's why I say the nature of your job is very important for this discussion.

Some offices give employees time off during holidays, but others don't. Some even make employees come to work on Christmas Day or during other festive seasons.
Well every sectors have their different ways on how they operate and if you can fit in or blend in to their demands you quit, mostly they make this known to you prior to when you start and alongside when you feel you need a break you can as well apply to your management and if you're granted permission that's fine, but it's not mandatory on most sectors as they undergo shift during this period a times. Here if you are working in a public office, mostly taking break during holidays are known. But if you are in a private sector, mostly they don't grant that holiday break since it's a peak season. Unless if the company decides to lessen the manpower during that time to lessen the expenses, then you can request for a holiday break. Otherwise, if you are working in healthcare or medical related works, taking a break is uncertain.

Just so you know, there are instances people get emergency of their work even when they on holidays, that's why I say the nature of your job is very important for this discussion. Although 2 days off are mandatory in the government sector, in the private sector it is usually 1 day. Sometimes the private sector holiday is any day of the week, especially in the office. I think that people of different religions cannot perform their religious duties at the same time, maybe in some cases, government officials and employees can attend their chats together. Government officials and employees can give enough time to their families on 2 days off, on the other hand, private sector employees are not able to give enough time to their families and do not feel comfortable with the pressure of work. In the business sector, 2 weeks can be enough time if the business plan is correct and there is high demand in the market and new people are constantly emerging. Again, in many cases, this time is not enough, it may be laziness, inefficiency, lack of proper planning. In the government sector, especially in fire services, hospitals, holidays are usually not mandatory holidays, here a team has to be forced to perform its duty all the time.

Whether you take a holiday or not depends entirely on the post you are working in and where you are working. If you are working in a state security department or an emergency department, you should play an important role in the larger interest. In the case of these important people of the state, their work can be divided through shifts.
In recognition of the contribution of these selfless people, special arrangements should also be made for them. On the other hand, in the case of ordinary workers, they should be allowed to take a holiday.
Holidays will make the workers feel good and after the holidays, they will get the motivation to work with new enthusiasm.

It depends on the type of work, or the company where we work, even though on holidays we are told to work to achieve the desired production at our workplace, yes, that is a natural thing considering that we also get a decent amount of extra money, when other people don't go to work, or work while on vacation such as government installations visiting other countries on the basis of work and of course vacations are a definite thing.

But what do you think about making someone's work mandatory during holidays?
Of course, these employer requirements vary in different countries. And in Asia, for example, they are strict and mandatory like nowhere else. I have a friend who still works in an office and I often hear stories from him about the conditions his company puts forward for him on holidays. There is no mandatory requirement to go to work. But there are offers to go to work for double pay. And this is cool, because those who need money for gifts can easily get it by doing their usual tasks at work. This is definitely good, precisely because there is no obligation.

Additionally, filing a complaint with the labor law agency may help you get justice, but then you will definitely no longer have the opportunity to work at that company. This is something many workers are considering, especially in the current difficult economic climate when finding a better job than their current one is very difficult.
The only solution is that we should clarify these things before officially working at any company.
You're 100% correct. Due to low laws protection to the complainers, it makes the employees are forced to be slaves. If they made report, they will lost their jobs and there's a chance the company can sue them back for tarnish the company's name. The employees name might be included in blacklist and shared to all Head Of Recruitment because they think these kind employees will make the company in loss. Hence, most employees stay silent.

Some offices give employees time off during holidays, but others don't. Some even make employees come to work on Christmas Day or during other festive seasons.
For me, I don't think it's fair to make an employee work during holidays. I think it should be voluntary - if you want to come to work, you can, but if you don't, you can stay home and celebrate with your family and friends.
Giving employees official holidays during their festive seasons should be part of their benefit package. I say "their festive seasons" because Christians may want to celebrate Christmas, Muslims may want to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, and Hindus may want to celebrate Diwali.
This is also a way to promote diversity in the workplace. If Christians take Christmas off, Muslims and Hindus can work, and then when Muslims take Eid off, Christians and Hindus can work. This way, you can regulate your workforce and give employees the freedom to celebrate their holidays.
By doing this, you prioritize employees' satisfaction and well-being. This is why people don't leave jobs, they leave toxic work environments. When you make people feel comfortable and loved, they will stay, and it will increase productivity and mutual respect.

But what do you think about making someone's work mandatory during holidays?
Workplace holiday policies are more than logistical—they reflect a company’s values and its care for employees. Mandatory holiday work can feel unfair, while voluntary participation with proper incentives respects individual choice. Official holidays as benefits acknowledge employees’ cultural and religious traditions, fostering inclusivity and belonging in diverse workplaces. Flexible solutions, like floating holidays, balance diversity and operational efficiency. Supportive policies enhance employee satisfaction, well-being, and retention, while rigid, toxic environments erode morale and trust. Though holiday closures may seem like short-term losses, they build long-term loyalty and productivity. On a personal level, holidays are vital for family, traditions, and emotional renewal, and losing this time can feel deeply impactful. Thoughtful, human-centric policies not only support employees but also strengthen businesses overall.

The situation in my country is simply appalling. Citizens are so heavily indebted that they cannot spend a day without work. It has become a banal necessity. No one from the management forces them to work on weekends and holidays. People go to work themselves. Even if they do not want to do this, they are left with no other choice. Therefore, this is my view on this situation. I am not delighted with the fact that this is happening. Every year the situation is noticeably worsening in the personal financial well-being of many people. In general, it seems to me that my country is heading for a total catastrophe. Many economists have already confirmed this. Well, how can we talk about holidays with such initial data?

If there is a need to work during this festive period and there is a big reward for working during this festive period I see no issues with it. After all we accepted the offer to work when we were served our employment laters. The will always be time to spend with our love ones. For me I don't mind working anytime I am called upon to execute my duties because I love what I do. I will only feel used when I work extra time and no form of compensation is given.
The sectors that are completely shut down during festive periods are government establishments. For private owned establishment they might have a thing or two to fix up and this might warrant their employees making some sacrifices during this period but a good establishment who has their employees at heart won't leave them without a good reward and in most cases they make it optional

Yeah, Many private institutions don't want to give holidays during festivals. I have also seen that private institutions oppress workers and force them to work, even though they do not get fair wages due to overwork. In my country, those who work in garment factories have to make a lot of sacrifices. Usually, they cannot leave their workplace to bring a smile to their families' faces, but they still work hard. However, all institutions, whether government or private, should have a holiday for workers on festive days. Those who work as factory workers on a daily wage also have the right to enjoy themselves on festive days. If all institutions could take it for the workers, the institutions would be in a better position very soon. We run institutions by workers, if we cannot take care of the workers, the institution will not run well. That is why there should be instructions from the government for the workers so that they will get their fair rights back and can live a good life.

After the COVID 19 many countries are economically damaged and many of the countries are facing crises. Sone countries escaped from that kind of situation by the strict government policies and discipline of people but many countries are facing the result of COVID 19. Nobody want to work in holidays because everyobe want to spend time with his family because he did effort in the whole years and he want to enjoy the Christmas if he is Christmas and he want to enjoy the Eid if he is Muslim and he want to enjoy Holi if he is Hindu but this will be happen if he has money in his pocket if government will take out money from his pocket in the form of Bills, how he will enjoy the life ? That is aspect of that .

Yup that's true, there are always some companies that require their employees to still come to work even though it should be their time off especially during the festive season, but usually especially in my country the company also gives much higher wages compared to normal days to employees, the goal is of course so that employees don't mind the regulation when people are on vacation but they work, and there are also always some people who say that it's not a problem for them. Basically, the majority of people have the view that money is everything to them, and maybe that's why they accept the demand to still come to work during the holiday season but that too with a salary that is usually 2x the usual days, and usually the company also has a reason for telling its employees to still come in, usually because there is a target that must be pursued that cannot be tolerated.

i think asian work culture is definitely a lot stricter but i would blame it on a lot of asian countries being third world countries with the hustle culture and workaholic mentality and its the need to provide for themselves and their families so i think even if it wasn’t mandatory a lot of asian workers would wish to work anyway and add onto their paychecks

We have few institutes which are doing decent things for their workers, and they are also having good rewards and bonuses for them but mostly are run out of funds and leave them empty hands for having nothing into their pockets which hurt their families we need rules about things like these which helps them in all conditions.

This is not a global problem though, at least not a serious one everywhere anyway. It is mainly in places like USA where everyone is an immigrant and their holidays are spread all over the year. Otherwise in most countries (that are countries not a colony) the holidays are clearer and everyone celebrates them not just some groups which makes it easy for a business to plan ahead knowing certain days are holidays every year, not every day of every year The other problem is capitalism. The "capitalist" doesn't care about employees. The only thing he cares about is profit and profit is maximized if he makes them work their assess off even during holidays. Again this is not a global problem, it is mostly seen in places with the worst cases of capitalism. Again USA and China are the two biggest capitalist regimes that have this problem among their workforce. Beside capitalism and profits, there are workers that cannot just go on holidays expressly because of the nature of their work and the implication of taking holidays on an absolute note. Health workers, customer service representative and tech consultants aren't very much advisable to go on express holidays leaving their works open and unattended. There may be emergencies which if not attended to, may lead to loss of lives, loss of patronage or other concerns to mention but a few. In times like these, it's good that those jobs are done on shifts across celebrations. In my place of work, we're two in my department and we've shared the duties. My colleague would be taking charge of the software related concerns for Christmas starting from 23rd, and I'll return on the 30th to take over for the new year. I think it's better taken in turns and someone being there to attend to people and processes rather than totally shutting down services for the celebration.

The same as you I would not like working mandatory on holidays. Why? It's a traditional thing. We have this tradition that the whole family should be together whenever Christmas day comes and as we grow older we miss those moments because that may be the only way to see them again for a whole year. It's not being bossy or anything but the CEO must also know that there are different traditions and religions with different employees and it must be respected if you also want some respect from them. Imagine an employee being hated by his wife because he is not there during that day. I bet that the employee will start hating the management next and will soon resign and look for another job.
