whats IRC?

Internet Relay Chat ... something people very much used in the late 90´s and still is in use today.... some may remember the famous QuakeNet from their youth gaming times ( if you are in your 25-40´s Cheesy )

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Relay_Chat

In addition, to join the Monero irc channel, just use this link -> https://webchat.freenode.net/, set the channel to #monero and you should be good to go!

Privacy matters, use Monero - A true untraceable cryptocurrency
Why Monero matters? http://weuse.cash/2016/03/05/bitcoiners-hedge-your-position/

in a week price down of 40% - why?

There's no way to know why...

But here's my projection:

https://www.tradingview.com/chart/XMRBTC/uQgjpmzT-XMR-Monero-losing-value-vs-Bitcoin/

Buy back levels at the areas with triangles...wait for the timer to expire on the downtrend to buy back in.

Is there any more modern looking chatrooms that arent slack. slack sucks its invite only and that ruins adoption

Who needs more? It's such a nice clean interface and words are words.

But I think the cool kids are using jabber these days.

For all intensive purposes...
Sorry, but this is a pet peeve of mine.  What you should say instead is "for all intents and purposes..."

This is unfair to the rare person who really was talking about the subset of purposes that are intensive.

I agree, I think we're being Intensivest with these sort of broad, sweeping language corrections. If we're not careful it's a slippery slope towards Antidisestablishmentarianism.

As to sweeping language corrections: Mark Twain (Or Samuel Clemens, or possibly M. J. Shields) came up with a plan to move us in a sensible direction.  I do not know why it never caught on.

For example, in Year 1 that useless letter "c" would be dropped to be replased either by "k" or "s", and likewise "x" would no longer be part of the alphabet. The only kase in which "c" would be retained would be the "ch" formation, which will be dealt with later. Year 2 might reform "w" spelling, so that "which" and "one" would take the same konsonant, wile Year 3 might well abolish "y" replasing it with "i" and Iear 4 might fiks the "g/j" anomali wonse and for all.
Jenerally, then, the improvement would kontinue iear bai iear with Iear 5 doing awai with useless double konsonants, and Iears 6-12 or so modifaiing vowlz and the rimeining voist and unvoist konsonants. Bai Iear 15 or sou, it wud fainali bi posibl tu meik ius ov thi ridandant letez "c", "y" and "x" -- bai now jast a memori in the maindz ov ould doderez -- tu riplais "ch", "sh", and "th" rispektivli.
Fainali, xen, aafte sam 20 iers ov orxogrefkl riform, wi wud hev a lojikl, kohirnt speling in ius xrewawt xe Ingliy-spiking werld.

But I am taking us off topic.

Back on topic...  There are indeed times "all intensive purposes" makes sense.

To mitigate botnet mining, would it be possible to alter the POW algorithm to require the presence of a freely distributable usb device that functions as a "mining license"? CPU's without this hypothetical device would be unable to mine efficiently. No doubt this has been thought of before and dismissed. Why wouldn't it work?

Im sure there would still be a way to emulate that. And if you mean special usb hardware that needs to be bought... who should build it and sell it ?

Its probably possible to do something that would require both a CPU and a cheap ASIC. I don't know of any designs for it, and if you are giving it away for free you are talking about a pretty large investment (or at least non-trivial) in design development, manufacturing, and distribution that would have to be paid by someone. Who?

However, in practice I think what that is going to do is discourage mining participation and adoption in the extreme, and end up concentrating mining with professionals. Instead of just downloading software and running it (i.e. instant gratification) you are going to have to get your hands on a dongle. Even if the cost is free most non-professionals won't bother. Maybe by "freely distributable" you meant the device would still have a monetary cost (addressing the question of who would pay for them). In that case the effect on adoption is likely far, far worse, even if the cost is low.

Also, in most cases mining is the same algorithm as verification. If you can't mine without the dongle you probably won't be able to run a node, not even an SPV-type node (or at least not without a huge performance penalty). So similar adoption issues even for non-mining nodes/users.

The cure is worse than the disease IMO.

Even this only works in the short term anyway. If it somehow becomes popular despite the adoption hurdles, CPU manufactures will build in the ASIC functionality the way Intel has built in AES, various functions used for media coding, is now building in SHA, etc.

Would be a great way to repurpose unprofitable bitcoin usb block erupters if they needed to be used in conjunction with cpu/gpu as part of a dual algo mandate.

Well, you just give people with a block errupter or whatever SHA device a speedup, make part of the PoW calculation SHA256 based, so it gets speed up heavily from the asics but you still required a second part that does not use SHA.
That way you can still easily verify the blocks, doesn´t need an asic for verification but mining benefits heavily from it.

Not sure this is the acceptation way to handle this. The web wallet is operated by a Core member. If we cannot trust that site, we might as well not be able to trust the operator. Im sure its just a hick up and will be good shortly, but should be taken pretty serious non the less.

I think this is a small hick up too but we need to be realistic, first thing I did after creating my wallet there was read the terms of service and it says it can go down and never up again at any time for whatever reason, I dont say this to create suspicions, I think fufflypony has a perfect record in this regard. But its how these things works, we can only trust in the p2p network. Besides the code to recover the funds from mymonero with the simplewallet is already in the github so there is really nothing to fear.

All back up:)

The Galera cluster had a bit of a cascading failure due to disk space issues (logging got out of control and log-rotate setup was faulty), so the API couldn't satisfy queries. Of course, this happens in the dead of night whilst I'm asleep

If, at some point, we can afford support staff in different time zones we can alleviate the risk of this happening. If it is ever super urgent, and I am asleep, all of the core team have my mobile phone number and can call me till I wake up.
