Nope. Only your wallet can see it. Neither the block explorer nor anyone else can see your transfers or balance given the address (public key). There is something called a "View Key" (provided to you when you created your wallet) that can be used to view your incoming transfers but I don't think any of the block explorers have support for it yet.

Will someone please elaborate on the license described in July 23 - Monero Missives #8, how can an open source project require a license?

Most open source projects have a license. Typically a variant of GPL. Being Open Source doesn't mean that you're free to do whatever you want with the code provided. Depending on the license involved, there will usually be certain restrictions. And some licenses are freer than others. For example, some licenses require that if you make changes to the code, you have to properly attribute where the code came from. This is commonly seen in the "Creative Commons" license. Here's a decent page comparing Open Source licenses: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_free_and_open-source_software_licenses

So, let's say that I wanted to make a Monero transfer to Alice. And let's say I specifically wanted Alice to be able to know/see my payment address (for example to be able to make a return transaction, or as a way of verifying that the specific transaction came from me). How would I accomplish that?
Would it be sufficient to simply choose no mixin for that transaction? If so, what would be the correct command for that? If not, how might I link my address to that transaction?
I know I would be breaking the anonymity, but the situation I am thinking of would be a rare and special circumstance.
I hope someone with a better understanding of the protocol than I have can take a moment and give me a clue on this.
Thanks.

After testing the "--restore-deterministic-wallet" on windows, i lost some transactions. I re-download the blockchain but only the last transactions appear.
What is the problem?
I am having the same problem as this guy. I just restored my cold wallet with the deterministic key... Only the past day's transactions show up. I read the subsequent replies to his post but don't really understand what to do to fix the bug (I download the windows binaries, I assume they are outdated). Do I have to get the recent updated code from github and compile it (I don't know how to do that ! )? Any help? It's fun learning all this stuff!

You can do this using the view key. Apart from using the tx_id field, I don't know any other way to use for proof-of-payment apart from giving someone your .keys file The usage of the view key has not yet been integrated into the wallet's functionality, but devs have implied it will be there in the future. Using no mixin would break the anonymity of both yourself and inputs you received from other people (thereby de-anonymizing them as well), as it becomes part of the viewable block chain. You'd still have a stealth address though. To prevent this de-anonymization from needing to be done for the type of situations you have in mind, the three above methods can be used.

nice try nsa lol
lol. If you've already used an exchange with a known email address or un-obscured ip address then they already have the ability to find out what they'd like to know - "how much do you have?"

I wonder what the chances are that we are on their radar yet.

Okay I will abide by your desire to censor this thread. I will not reply unless someone makes a very serious critique of what I wrote that requires a response.
You are welcome to participate in this thread at any time as long as it is focused on topics directly relevant to Monero. ...abstract philosophical discussions of proof-of-work design are not directly relevant to Monero. If you want to call that censorship, so be it... ...
I got the whole way through, tearing my hair out, before I realised what was happening:) Maybe I led you to believe that my game was built in the forum and not in the gym. Or maybe...you are just making excuses. For that reason alone, they are likely to get a lot of attention, and attention equals dollars, and dollars equals hiring more devs. Pretty virtous cycle that XMR should have but doesn't seem able to make happen. They have already sold over 1 million USD worth.
Meaning more Mythical Man-Months to muck up the progress on identifying the sweet spot. Edit: Vitalik Buterin's intelligence is quite high as displayed on his blog posts. And they have other smart people in their group, with Tual even claiming Ralph Merkel is on their team. Expect great things from them. But it doesn't mean they will necessarily hit the sweet spot. They might though.

Git training? Really? No words for what this says about the dev team... 4. Since git (and, by extension, github) can be confusing to developers that are working on Monero code (or on any git repositories, really), one of the Monero key contributors, tewinget, will be hosting a Git Crash Course next week Wednesday, July 30th.

You mean how it shows that the team is inclusive? I am sure the core devs know how to use git, but that doesn't mean there aren't some decent coders that would be interested in contributing but have never used version control at all (it's sad but true). Some people will try to see the downside in the most positive things...

Are you serious? After they just messed up and forgot to merge a fix to the right branch? Some people will try to see the downside in the most positive things...

I would think that the discussion is taking place specifically because of the forgotten merge. God forbid someone hasn't used git before, or has used it in different ways than they are planning on using it for this project. The fact that they're willing to host the session in order to standardize their efforts on this project after only a few months since launch shows to me that it's growing rapidly. A group of individuals, familiar with the project, offering training in order to better understand how the project should be handled? Not in my open source project ! I'm still waiting for even one thing you like about Monero
