Here's an attempt for ELI5. Well maybe more like ELI12.

NUD works on two fronts. First you need to have a Tor address.
(You need to install Tor yourself and turn your wallet into a hidden service)

Others on the network will not then see your IP address, instead
they see you something like lcqnp3bufy2hoosd.onion.

When your  address is relayed through Tor network, it's pretty good anonymity,
meaning that it is pretty hard for anybody figure out who is behind
the .onion address.

This in itself is not very remarkable (some other coins have it too), but NUD
adds another layer of anonymity in the form of transactions by delegate.

A delegate is someone who uses a part of his total balance to service
other users for a fee. So when you want to send NUD anonymously,
your wallet contacts a delegate wallet that has enough NUD to fund
your transaction. Then the delegate transfers his coins to recipient,
and afterwards you send an equal amount (plus delegate fee) to the delegate.

The end result is that there is no record in the blockchain that links you to the recipient.
What is recorded are the payments from the delegate to the recipient
and from you to the delegate, but for an outsider it is hard to say who is the sender
and who is the delegate, especially when there are many transactions
of this kind.

The wonderful thing is that all this happens kind of automatically. The
sender just pushes a button and goes to sleep. The delegate can be
asleep all the time. The wallet takes care of the processing. And if something
goes wrong (like computer crashing when they're asleep), the sender or the delegate can
reclaim their NUD. That works because the transactions have an inbuilt escrow
mechanism.

This is the gist of it. In practice however there are still a few hurdles and
wrinkles, that will no doubt be levelled out as NUD matures.

I didn't give any exchange permission to add NUD, that is why I ignore all the PMs from exchanges willing to add support to NUD.

Of course I am not the dictator of the network, exchanges may still add NUD without my permission, just don't be surprised when inconveniences occur.

Unfortunately we are bound to have many updates within the first weeks. I don't think that it's wise to add support for NUD so early for most exchanges.

Bingo - adding something no new and experimental is done for one reason, so people can try to "get rich quick" off of the swings it will initially go through.
It's short term greed, not what is best long term for the coin.

I am not personally interested in this coin but that is because it doesn't address any of my concerns (I don't care about by IP being known nor how it is mined, I don't mine) but what the dev said in that post - yeah, he's right on.

Fascinating thread to read, btw.

Does this work on Ubuntu 14.04?

I have been trying with the binaries as well as compiling the sources, but I have had no success so far.
Yes, it does.  What errors are you getting?

Yes, it does.  What errors are you getting?

Problems with libboost when trying to execute the binaries.

Then, unable to compile the sources:

Code:
$ qmake-qt4 ../bitcoin-qt.pro
Project MESSAGE: Building with UPNP support

If this sounds wrong, possibly the target language is not set or recognized.

try compiling with:
Code:
sudo apt-get install build-essential libboost-all-dev libcurl4-openssl-dev libdb5.1-dev libdb5.1++-dev mysql-server
cd /src/leveldb/
sh build_detect_platform build_config.mk ./
cd /src
make -f makefile.unix USE_UPNP=-

Edit:
You may have troubles if you have the wrong version of boost installed.  I've had to purge the version I had and reinstall.  Boost can be a pain in the ass.

make builds the headless client, but
looks like jap1968 wants to build the wallet with qt. I recommend getting
Qt Creator and building it from there with "USE_UPNP=-" build
step added(include the quote marks)

For the more discriminating NUD users, this git repository of the NUD source releases might prove useful: https://github.com/nudnud/nud-unofficial.

The official site does not contain a source code archive, so it is hard to evaluate what is contained in the different updates provided. Also, the git repository might facilitate community-based improvements upon the codebase.
