I am considering breaking out my dremmel tool and modding a standard (albeit large) PC case for my project. Cut out all the inside casing, glue some rails on the sides to secure the blades on,and fan the crap out of it front and back. My biggest three issues at this point are:
1) Noise
2) Heat
3) Power Consumption
My ultimate goal would be to be able to consolidate all of the blades to one or two housing units (whatever that ends up being) and then doing my best to undervolt them in such a way that they are functional but still within the 400W threshold. It looks like you have found the sweet spot as far as the undevolt goes, now we just need to tie it all together with a central control board.

thanks! i really like your idea with the spacers. Where did you find all those?
i found them here: http://www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/6261180047.htmledit: Keep in mind these boards are undervolted to 0.74v - 0.79v and without headsinks they will get hot, but the 2 fans keep them at aprox 45 degrees celcius similar standoffs are available on amazon - some with prime shipping. just takes a bit to find the exact one you want. but start out looking for M3 standoff

Got another board setup (I really need better heatsinks...), but I've come to the conclusion that the PL2303s simply won't work, period. cgminer sees the uarts, and sends the nonce tests. However, that fails (Bmsc recv golden nonce timeout). Even if I comment out/skip past the checks in driver-bmsc.c, it fails out even further down. So I suspect it really won't work, at least not with the little time I can invest at this point.
Has anyone had the PL2303 work?
I do have some CP2102s which should be in the mailbox any day now so I can get in on the party. I might try underclocking so I can avoid/minimize the heatsinking.

Interesting development. I was considering buying two raspberry pis to have one managing the blades and another acting as the stratum proxy. Does that make sense or should we be able to put both on one pi?

1 rasp pi should be able to handle them, but since they dont work with my usb hub that i have at the moment, im unable to test that, but i might use my beagleboard for them instead

ok, so i have an idea, connect a rpi gpio , via pulldown resistor, to a "switch" that can turn on, turn off the power supply, but what is the component called that can connect 2 wires to each other, if, signal from gpio is high, and disconnect if gpio signal is low/off?

You mean a relay ... ? Something like this possibly ...

We need something that can be normally off and is only triggered when needed. I have a design for that floating around here womewhere. It is for a 12v car battery but we can modify it.

you cannot chain them you need to use 1 cable per controller (or when j4bber is done, per connector on controller board) unless j4bberwock makes the connector on the controller with more tx/rx lines then you could do an octopus type ...

I see, I just though j4bber's prototype was supporting 6 board and i was only seeing 2 connectors. thanks ;-)

I guess i will try to get some UART => USB adapter (that is the CP2102 right ?) since we still a few weeks away from the controller.
EDIT: Any chance to get your cgiminer compiled for windows ? I also have a bfgminer running for an old BFL unit. I guess it can't work with both running at the same time ?
