Sadly it seems like the 17th and the 20th are the next two dates we will be waiting for. No communication from Bitmain to clear the confusion. I hope it all works out okay.

Second big "doo-doo" of BitMain...first was S2...now S3...

Only S1 track record is still holding my faith alive...

Hello everyone,

When we were doing the first mass production, we found that not all of the S3’s DC/DC module could be stable enough to support the 478GH/s speed. After long time testing, all of the S3 run stably at 441GH/s, which however is 7.7% less than the 478GH/s we have announced.

So we decide the final specification of ANTMINER S3 here:

Hash Rate: 441 GH/s or more
Power Consumption: about 340 Watt at the wall when running at 441GH/s
Power Efficiency: 0.77 J/GH on wall
Power Supply: 12V DC
Size:  331 mm x 137 mm x 160 mm
Fans: Two 14038 fans mounted on both front and back ends.
Operating Temperature: 0 °C to 35 °C
Complied with: FCC / CE
Network Connection: Ethernet

Many of the customers may be lucky to find that their S3 can be overclocked to 478GH/s.

We apologize for this incident. We offer two options for customers:

1)   10.0% worth of coupon for the B1~B3 customers. This is the default option. (10% based on what you have paid for the B1~B3)
2)   7.7% worth of refund. We will release a function on our official website for application of this option. If you have bought from our resellers, please contact them and provide your Bitcoin address.

Shipping schedule updated:

Batch 1: The shipping will be finished in 14th and 17th.
Batch 2: It will be shipping out between 18th and 19th.
Batch 3: It will be shipping out between 19th and 22nd.

Anyone able to explain the bold text above?
What was causing the DC-DC module to become unstable and stable in some?
Anyone capable of pouring some technical or theoretical explanation for this phenomenon?

sure chips and most caps resistors whatever are -+ 5%  so the modules built had a lot of -5 % parts in them.

happens in the best companies.  INTEL has been making cpu chips that vary as much as 10% for overclocking.  why not the dc to dc module here have a larger then desired variance.

I am all the more likely to run mine at 400gh and hope for 280 watts.  

That's true but for overclocking means when we trust them.
But all components at standard / ideal condition should work almost equal or with very negligible variance.
A component which collapses due to this variance is strange.
It should be considered that they overkilled the design to get 0.77J/GH.

Since the specifications were changed, I doubt whether the second fan is necessary.
Demanding a full or partial refund is morally ok but, still the product as per the statement holds the 0.77J/GH.
Since they are refunding and Product efficiency is there I don't think there is a need for the full refund.
The proportional refund offered is enough and if the discount of 10% is excellent, if, as we consider its of current order price.
Hope they will redesign this S3 in batch 3 and an S3+ or an S4 will be there.

...and this is just ONE of their pools...

If a batch 1 order (pair of miners) was 1.50 BTc then the voucher will be worth 0.15 BTc

So a future order for Batch 4? will have a starting price of (pair of miners) 1.35 BTc

Deduct the market reduction Bitmain have been applying of at least(pair of miners) 0.05 BTc = 1.30 BTc maximum (copied from the Batch 3 price)


Then you arrive at 1.30 Btc less the voucher of 0.15 BTc

This puts a Batch4? (pair of miners) at a net cost of 1.15 BTc

By the time the backlog of orders are cleared, then another market reduction will be needed. (another 0.05 BTc)

By the 20th of this month we should expect to pay no more than 1.10 BTc for a pair of Batch4? miners.


Does anyone agree with my figures?

Odd dissecting the coupon/refund thing, but since I have no shipping info it suffices for an interesting puzzle. I think it's more generous than we have guessed:

Say you've spend 10BTC on Bitmain gear s1-s3 total.
- 10% = 1BTC worth of coupons. Probably spread out in various denominations 0.1, 0.15 btc coupons = @ 8-10 coupons on future s3 orders
- 7.7% = 0.77BTC in cold, hard BTC

That's my guess on it. I think your coupon guess of 0.15 is correct. It'd be tempting if they allow us to use more than 1 coupon considering it's min 2 order.

first one i tried to open on my iphone but quickly realized it was a phishing scam so i closed everything down, now im just deleting them
