$comment++;  I've always used 8.8.8.8 on my mining gear with zero problems.  Easy to remember and always up.

It's also Google, which means every lookup you do is stored in a database somewhere.

What differs in opendns from googledns, for both the miner need to lookup remote db.
May have host cache too. Or need to enter pool ip directly in miner if possible.
For bigger miners alt pools will provide dedicated IP. Not sure about btc pools.

3 S3's received on the 17th. Set them all up with 750w PSU's of various sort.

First 24 hours all 3 OC'd to 250 mhz and getting about 500gh/s each. stoked!

After about 28 hours, notice one "x" on the first S3. Rebooted, went away for about ten minutes them returned. Average hashrate dropped to 470ghs. Set it down to 237.5, all "o" and getting about 475 ghs average, little more on poolside. I'lll take it!

A bit concerned that one has temps of 46 sometimes, during hotter times of the day. Is this too hot to maintain?

Wish I could buy one of these but as a poor university student I definitely can't. My tuition of $4,800 could definitely buy some mining power.. Lol

that 45 - 46 is "okay'  but   the temp probe may      not by near the dc to dc part that bitmaintech says could burn out.

BTW you are getting really  good overclock numbers.  my gear did not over clock well at all.

Yes, you probably got the absolutely best by the luck of the draw.
My best machine can barely handle 237.5 with speeds slowly crawling toward 470ish-I'll take it if it will be stable. I will post tomorrow when it stabilizes as I switched from default just a couple of hours ago. HW errors are in the thousands, but formula says that they are just a tad below 0.6%, which is manageable. At 218.75, this miner had almost no HW errors (like a dozen in 12hr).
My batch 2 machines had not shipped yet-would be interesting to see how they behave.

Update re the beeping issue (see various people's posts upthread, back at least as far as page 71).

As chadbu suggested, I tried changing difficulty to 512 from 256 at my main pool. I was skeptical of this, but it was easy to do. Results were interesting but inconclusive. Beeping stopped for hours but eventually showed up, and share rate dropped. Both effects could be mere coincidence. "More research needed".

The case was easily opened, five screws on each side as people have posted. The beeper was easy to find using minter12345's photo from page 75: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=671189.msg7922856#msg7922856

I used felt pads intended for cupboard doors, something like those suggested by philipma1957 on page 77: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=671189.msg7925833#msg7925833 and stuck them on top of each machine's beeper.

On restart, each S3 beeped twice. The sound is definitely less shrill now but is far from silent. I'm hoping it is enough to placate my wife, and the real cause of all this fuss in our household - our dog, who started shivering when she heard the original beeps and has been wary ever since - she reacts the same way to smoke alarm beeps, which may be a good thing.

Thanks to all for the help and suggestions. For those who tuned in late, setting Beeper Ringing to False in the configuration tab does not stop the beeping. Oh - I found no thermal paste residue on the units, unlike the early S1s. The S3 is a nice piece of work, all in all.

Appears that 2 of my 6 units are running under spec 400 to 420 ghs-ish :|

All I know for sure is that every 3-4 hours when I get the beep, its at the start of a new block.
Check the homepage of blockchain.info after hearing the beep.

If you live in a dorm with "FREE" electricity, you might be able to work a deal with someone. You host their miners and you get a cut of the earnings.  

When my son goes back to school in August, I'm sending him my S1's to run for me in his dorm room.

You could always pick up an older miner from eBay or any of the forums. Since your power is free, efficiency is not that important.

ok, how would I setup the Antminer S3 unit if I dont have wired LAN ? e.g. sitting in the garage. Would I have to setup some sort of wireless access point and do it like that?

Alternatively, I have a spare PC in the garage running other stuff connected to my home network through wifi. can I use a crossover cable to connect to the S3 unit using the LAN port on the PC (I would setup static ip to be on same subnet as the S3).

yeah had that issue.  try freq 212.5


   you may get 430 and you will use less power.

   vi /etc/config/asic-freq    <   you need that for ssh in





looks like freq 212.5 is good if you miner does not work well at stock or at overclock
