Can someone more technical-oriented approve this, or is it a complete BS?

..but now that I'm looking at my Chain data I think I'm wrong. I've sent multiple 1111.11.. SDC to Shadow and I don't have any "100", just "400" etc. so the tokens might "combine".. Well it would be really useful if someone enlightened enough could explain. I'm done guessing wrong :]

The coins are denominated in 1,3,4, and 5s as per the WP ..
That means if you send 1111.11111111 it will probably break it down to 1000, 100, 10, 1, 0.10, 0.01 etc.. but it could also do 400, 400, 300, 10, 1, 0.1, 0.01 etc.. etc..

Below is a none-exhaustive list but you get the idea Smiley

And if I have, let's say, only one Shadow "400" token, would I be able to send (or convert back to SDC) just 300?

Yes you should still be able to send it, and get some smaller Shadow tokens back as change.

Latest windows wallet. User experience

Preamble: sed to run self compiled linux wallet before ZK fork. Few personal changes meant loss of linux box and just a windoze box available. Had most SDC parked on exchange as I was also between houses and wanted access. Anyhow, being more and more convinced this is a shining diamond in the somewhat rough ( I get to that) I decided to support the network with both some staking and some shadow to help with obfuscation in the network and transaction processing (plus a nice small stake (;-).

This is my experience from a 'new' users perspective:

1. used latest win wallet & bootstrap - no problems. Patience pays as the bootstrap gets loaded. Windoze is offering 'not responding' errors but just be patient. May have been 10 mins or so and sync was up
2.Never saw the windows wallet - very nice - looking forward to chat etc
3. Transferred a few sdc from exchange for testing - all good - fast transaction
4. transferred in larger amount - wallet encrypted - got stuck with what my mate calls the 'windoze sphincter'  Had to eventually kill it as it would not respond. Restart of wallet showed all is fine.

5. Now to creating some shadow. Paranoid as I am I create a 'stealth' receiving address and then send 1 SDC -> Shadow via the 'send SDC-SHADOW' dropdown
6. Couple of password repeats and the send goes through no problem. Moments later I have 1 Shadow
7. Now to test to get it back to SDC. And this is where my current confusion lays:

trying to send 1 shadow back to SDC with default settings for ring sizes gave me an error about exceeding balance. I then reduced to 0.5 shadow to sdc and got the following:

" Not enough system or owned outputs for the requested amount" "Zero a nonymous coin outputs exist for coin value 0.5000000"

Trying 0.95, 0.7 etc resulted in a stealth transaction outwards of 0.01 showing in my transactions. Presume these are the fees. But my 1 shadow has disappeared!

Before you ask: of course I send it to myself using a new 'Receiving Stealth Address"

Now this might be 'user incompatibility' or a bug. But it sure enough frightened me enough to not convert 1111.11 SDC to shadow as was my plan. So the UI workflow (assuming this is a procedural fkup on my behalf) leaves some to be desired and may frighten away new users from some of the key functionality. I will take it up to try and test / understand the workflow and come back with some concise step by step info assuming I can get this to work reliably.

Just to clarify something that the UI doesn't tell you - The anon outputs need to be 10 blocks deep before they can be spent.

There should probably be a notification or something to let you know - I will speak to SDCDev about it.

so in addition to St3baS comment:
The anon outputs need to be 10 blocks deep before they can be spent

id also suggest clicking the "Suggest Ring Size" button before sending.

See my step-by-step (which works for me np):
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=745352.msg10074406#msg10074406

Quote

SCENARIO

A. You already created a stealth addy. You sent SDC to it with a "SDC to Shadow" send. You now have Shadow and SDC in your wallet.

B. You have presumably been awestruck spending "Shadow to Shadow" with ZK anon.

C. You now wish to convert some Shadow back to SDC.

SHADOW TO SDC

1. Go to the Send section of your wallet and select "Shadow to SDC" as the send type

2. Paste the stealth addy of the recipient (if you are the recipient then paste your own stealth addy). this part is counter-intuitive but YES you enter a stealth addy to create SDC!

3. Enter a send amount of 100 (for example) If you don't have 100 try 10, if u don't have 10 try 1. If necessary refer to the Chain Data section of your wallet to determine available input/output amounts (this  will not be necessary as the Shadow network grows)

Reminder: The anon outputs need to be 10 blocks deep before they can be spent - thanks to St3baS

4. Click "Suggest Ring Size"

5. Click "Send"

6. You will receive the SDC in a new SDC addy generated in your wallet on the fly (not in your old SDC addy).

IMPORTANT: This means you must BACKUP your wallet again! Alternatively you could quickly send them to an SDC addy you do have backed up but I personally like the idea of leaving them in the new addy, rather than sending to an older SDC addy u may have linked with exchanges/merchants etc

see https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=745352.msg10082842#msg10082842

Notes:

- If the stealth addy you paste in is highlighted red there is a prob with it. check there is'nt a space in the addy (this can happen sometimes when copy/pasting from the web)
- You might notice some unknown addys in your Receive section after you make a Shadow>SDC (some of these will be labelled with ao in front iirc). These appear as a result of the send and will disappear after the wallet is restarted. Your new SDC addy will of course remain.
- If it doesn't work restart ur wallet and try it again

Thoughts:

Additionally my feeling is you should always leave some dust Shadow amounts even if you want to convert all to SDC and cash out. These dust amounts (e.g. 0.5423) will improve the systems overall anon by confusing SDC>Shadow>SDC even more (in my opinion anyway).

Hope this helps Smiley

Still having difficulty converting Shadow to SDC. The buttons in the wallet are ambiguous and there is no clear procedure; also unclear is the relationship between stealth and open addresses. That's something that really needs to be a priority for the secrecy aspect of the coin to be useful- we need a wallet upgrade with the SDC-Shadow addressed.

When converting Shadow to SDC this is what I do at the moment. Because there are few Shadow in the network (less than 1%) the amount of available inputs/outputs is very small compared to what it will be soon. Therefor I inspect the Chain Data section of the wallet and pick an available System I/O value close to the amount I wish to convert.

Say you have 552.3245 Shadow you wanted to convert to SDC, then I would send 550. This would go through no problem. As I say we wont have to think about this as the amount of Shadow increases.

Now before sending 550 i click the button "suggest ring size". this will change the ring size value automatically and it should now send without a problem.

Additionally my feeling is you should always leave some dust Shadow amounts even if u wanna convert all to SDC and cash out. These dust amounts (e.g. 0.5423) will improve the systems overall anon by confusing SDC>Shadow>SDC even more (in my opinion anyway).

A tutorial would be useful and Im sure members of this community could produce some good ones Smiley

Reminder: Convert more SDC to Shadow.
Reminder: Its all about Shadow to Shadow.

You send what, to where? My instinct would be to set the "Shadow to SDC" option, send Shadow from my stealth address to my main address in my wallet. The coins should reappear as SDC at my public SDC address.

But even with very simple transactions, like 1 Shadow, it tells me there are insufficient outputs when asked to suggest a ring size. That doesn't make sense.  I'd like to see the Shadow-SDC conversion happen reliably a few times (not concerned about the dust) before leaving any more Shadow on the system.

OK.

A. You already created a stealth addy. You sent SDC to it with a "SDC to Shadow" send. You now have Shadow and SDC in your wallet.

B. You wish to convert some Shadow back to SDC.

SO

SHADOW TO SDC

1. Go to the Send section of ur wallet and select "Shadow to SDC" as the send type

2. Paste the stealth addy of the recipient (if u r the recipient then paste ur own stealth addy). this part is counter-intuitive but YES you enter a stealth addy to create SDC!

3. Enter a send amount of 100 (for example) If u don't have 100 try 10, if u don't have 10 try 1. If necessary refer to the Chain Data section of your wallet to determine available input/output amounts (this  will not be necessary as the Shadow network grows)

4. Click "Suggest Ring Size"

5. Click "Send"

6. You will receive the SDC in a new SDC addy generated in ur wallet on the fly (not ur old SDC addy).

IMPORTANT: This means you must BACKUP ur wallet again! Alternatively you could quickly send them to an SDC addy u do have backed up but I personally like the idea of leaving them in the new addy, rather than sending to an older SDC addy u may have linked with exchanges/merchants etc

OK, so every time I convert Shadow to SDC I create a new SDC address. Is this a new private key?

It seems like over time I will have hundreds of keys and stealth/public addresses in the wallet. The wallet also doesn't seem to be able to tell me what coins are associated with what address.

The amount of stealth addys will not grow unless you create more yourself. You will get a new SDC addy for every Shadow>SDC send. Whether you consolidate these amounts into a few addys is up to you. You can send your new SDC straight back to your original SDC addy with an SDC to SDC send. Personally I'll not be doing that. I have no prob whatsoever with maintaining 2 or 3 stealth (or Shadow) addys and 3 or 4 SDC addys (consolidating sometimes, sometimes not)

Technically you could get by with 1 stealth/shadow addy and 1 sdc addy, but my feeling is having several addys would improve anon. Certainly any SDC addy that has made transactions with merchants and exchanges (possibly reducing your anonymity) can be discarded after a time and replaced with a new addy. This is not an issue for Shadow addys of course.

Over 0.5 btc was donated in the last 24 hours... Keep going as the target is not far off.

Less than 2 btc in order to raise enough funds for the SDC peer review.

That's not even 0.02 btc per person if 100 community members chip in, under $6 each!
