Umm, how do I scare people into selling their coins?

A hardfork will happen in less than 2 days.  We all know hardforks are bad.  Get out while you still can, before you get forked.

This has been a public service announcement.

Not that I know of.  The node count went from 125 to 150 with the release of 0.9 and as I type we have 185.  These are ones with outgoing connections that can therefore be seen.   https://monerohash.com/nodes-distribution.html

So we should be OK.

there might be an outcry over monero similar to the hissy fit Chuck Schumer had over bitcoin.  A spark can turn into a wildfire of public outrage, fanned by the powers that be, and for example the NSA might apply its computing power to attacking monero.  I think that scenario is unlikely, but it's possible.

Chuck Schumer is among the highest paid whores working the NY-DC circuit.  The shameful, obscene things that filthy, corrupt SOB will do with his mouth for money would make Max Hardcore blush (or vomit in disgust).

But he did kick off Bitcoin's Great Rally to $1200, by grandstanding in a press conference, next to a laptop his interns got logged in to Silk Road ("ZOMG ITS EBAY FOR SCAARY EEVIL DRUUGS").  So Roger Ver has nothing on Schumer in terms of Bitcoin evangelism.

IMO we should contact Schumer as 'concerned citizens/banksters' and try to get him to perform a similar dramatic act with Monero as the subject.

Convince Schumer Monero is the biggest threat to his cushy phony-baloney mouth-whoring job, and we will reap PR dividends for years to come!   Cool

From what I know, Monero isn't even accepted on (most) DN markets right now (even though I would have no idea); and if that's the case it would probably be pretty tough for him to prove the point of "Monero's scariness"

Any release date for the gui wallet?
Can i trust mymonero online wallet??

Thx

No official date afaik, but I'd guess maybe August. I wouldn't keep more than 100 or so XMR on web wallet. There was a Reddit thread where one guy supposedly lost 32k XMR on mymonero Shocked

Holy crap, I missed that!  https://www.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/491gbj/i_lost_some_monero_that_i_had_on_mymonerocom/

Bump, still no progress from the pools listed below. All others have upgraded and are safe to mine on.

Also, if you get this message when running bitmonerod:

Quote
Last scheduled hard fork time shows a daemon update is needed now

You can safely ignore that as long as you are on any Hydrogen Helix version (i.e. 0.9.x).

I urge community members to please send a mail as well to the pools listed in my previous comment urging them to upgrade. Any Hydrogen Helix version is fine (0.9.x). Alternatively, miners should move their hash away from it and go to a pool that has already upgraded. A list of pools can be found here:

https://monerohash.com/#network

Bump, none of the pools listed below have upgraded yet. However, Minergate said they will upgrade soon, see:

https://twitter.com/MinerGate/status/710727384136335361

PSA: Users, (solo)miners, exchanges/merchants, and pooloperators must be on 0.9.x (preferably 0.9.2) in advance of the hardfork otherwise you will get forked/booted off the network. If you are mining on one of the following pools, please contact your poolop immediately or switch to another pool.

Approximately the 23th of March there will be a hardfork on the Monero network. Most pools have upgraded, but some have not yet. If they don't upgrade before the hardfork they will get forked/booted off the network. As a result you will miss out on revenue if you are mining on these pools. Thus, if you are mining on the following pools, please contact your pool owner as soon as possible and urge them to upgrade. Alternatively, you can switch to a pool that is on the right version.

FYI: You can plug the blockheader of your pool into "http://moneroblocks.info/api/get_block_header/hash_of_blockheader". The minor_version must show "minor_version: 2". This means that the pool is on the right version. If it shows "0" or "1" the pool is on an outdated version. An example of a pool on the right version (Monerohash):

http://moneroblocks.info/api/get_block_header/2a88740443bf654e595bba7061509e6a3a80623da5de2478c4a90b45454a7fa8

List of pools that haven't upgraded yet:

List of pools that have upgraded:

You can find most pools here:

https://monerohash.com/#network

Some of the aforementioned pools are listed there as well. If you are switching, avoid the aforementioned pools.

Monero v0.9.2 - Hydrogen Helix - released! (Urgent and important bug fixes for the upcoming hard fork)

https://github.com/monero-project/bitmonero/releases/tag/v0.9.2

Quote
<fluffypony> will do shasums / gpg signed mesage tomorrow

Information from Github:

Quote
This has urgent and important bug fixes to 0.9.0 Hydrogen Helix
  • Major performance and size improvements to the LMDB database implementation
  • Urgent and important bug fixes for the upcoming hard fork
  • Huge bug fixes to the database hard fork handling
  • New simplewallet flag to restore from keys
  • Initial work on a wallet library / API
  • Updated in-source block headers

General hardfork information:

Background:

https://forum.getmonero.org/4/academic-and-technical/303/a-formal-approach-towards-better-hard-fork-management

Quote
What are the change(s) with the upcoming hard fork on the 20th of March?

  • Blocktime is bumped from 1 to 2 minutes. See:

https://forum.getmonero.org/20/general-discussion/2401/increasing-the-block-time

  • Minimum blocksize is bumped to 60 KB. See:

https://forum.getmonero.org/20/general-discussion/2409/increasing-the-minimum-block-size

A big advantage of this is that current individual transactions that sometimes won't go through (because they are a bit above the median due to many outputs (e.g. dust), or the daemon / MyMonero rejects them for some reason) can easily be included in the block without incurring a penalty. Above is a bit of a blunt explanation, I am sure one of the core-team members / developers could give you a more detailed explanation.

  • Finally, the recommendations from the MRL team stated in MRL-0004, of which the minimum mixin >= 3 is probably the most salient. See:

https://lab.getmonero.org/pubs/MRL-0004.pdf

P.S. Due to variance the hard fork will likely be on the 21th or 22th of March. A specific block height was determined for the hardfork, not a specific date. The specific blockheight for the hardfork can be found here:

https://github.com/monero-project/bitmonero/blob/master/src/cryptonote_core/blockchain.cpp#L83

Quote
// version 2 starts from block 1009827

P.P.S. As long as you are on any 0.9.x version in advance of the hardfork you are fine.

I feel your pain. You still should run a local Monero node but can use the LightWallet2 GUI. If you are using Windows download Monero client at https://getmonero.org/downloads/ unzip to a folder on your desktop. Run bitmonerod until the blockchain is synched. You will also need to download LightWallet2 at https://getmonero.org/getting-started/choose. Download the LightWallet.exe and put in your Monero folder. While bitmonerod is running in a command console and synced messsage shows start up Lightwallet by clicking on the exe in your Monero folder and follow instructions. Now you have the privacy of a local Monero node with a GUI to send and receive Monero.

Development of the Monero GUI has been fully funded and is proceeding as we speak. There is of course no guarantee that one may be able to purchase Monero at the current prices after it is released.

Concerned that blockchain bloat will lead to centralization? Storing less than 4 GB of data once required the budget of a superpower and a warehouse full of punched cards. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/87/IBM_card_storage.NARA.jpg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punched_card

I meant something like this

This site can’t provide a secure connection

The client and server don't support a common SSL protocol version or cipher suite. This is likely to be caused when the server needs RC4, which is no longer considered secure.

Looking into the future, events almost never play out the way they think we will.  Sometimes things turn out better, sometimes worse, but often they play out in unexpected ways.

Totally subscribe that. Everytime somebody does a prediction, I know automatically is cancelled to happen. The more people predicting something, the more the reality blends into unexpected outputs.

Bubbles always happen when nobody expect them.

The overexpected halving x2 price won´t happen. You can mark my words. It would be or way more north than 800$/BTC or 400 stagnated and/or sunk. I would say the most improbable mix of both.

I predict the price will move up and down.

So you are basically predicting volatility.
I speculate also some volatility, now it probably rests a few days before creates a rock solid base for launching the next rocket to new orbit which is the high of 2015.

The interest rates in leding markets have dropped which indicates there are some shorts closed now but still there are open shorts so probably nothing drastic will happen to the downside but a slight dumps might take place before we have established the base probably somewhere close to 0.0034'ish.

Note that offered loans went to over 205K a few hours ago, before dropping back to current ~185K.  Still much higher than previously. The dropping rates and increasing offers could be  a result of new players undercutting for a piece of the pie, rather than closing shorts.  I still have loans out at 0.5% - 1%.
